How do you guys quickly initiate combat when engaging a target?

My typical engagement plan is as follows:

Spam D-Scan to find a target or targets or if I jump into a gate camp how can I get out with a) my ship and b) my pod

Once found, develop a plan of attack based on how the ships types are typically fit and flown and adjust for knowns such as pilots in local which can change how certain ships are fit and if the engagement point will be in space or at a FW plex. I typically do this while in warp to where said targets are.

The engagement plan focuses on which mods to pre-heat and priorities when I land and contingencies if one of these fail.
Priorities include in typical but not concrete order of precedence:
1) Control Range
2) Tackle
3) Apply DPS
4) Manage module activation, deactivation, and heat
5) Check d-scan for incoming hostiles that will support the target(s)
6) Check local for new entrants
7) Plan an exit strategy
8) What support can I call on if something juicy shows up and I can hold tackle

Once engaged its a matter of constantly adjusting the engagement plan to account for bad assumptions and adjusting to the flow of the engagement.

I also use f1:guns f2:scram/point f3:web f4:prop

Reason would be that guns stack by default on f1 when you undock, takes 5 seconds to adjust the rest while I'm in warp off undock.

I'll try mid slot 1234 below f keys. I used to always mouse those.

My map is set to alt+c, cuz f10 is too far
Fitting alt+F
Cargo alt+1
Hanger alt+2
Ship hanger alt+3

The rest of the orbit, approach, warp to hot keys are the same. I played a lot of shooters and my hands find aswd key position naturally.

Before an engagement, I have my preheats up (if any) zoom out to my tactical to where the 10km ring is on the bottom of my display. I keep my AB on sometimes if I'm buffer, mwd never. wait to see what enemy position is on my/his warp in, click like mad in that direction while trying to also squeeze ctrl for the lock. Swipe my finger across f keys and set q or w if I got point. That would be my brawler approach. It's much easier to learn with an AB bralwer fit first before rubber-banding all over the place in a fast kiter ship.

5. Press 1 for prop mod (I mapped midslots to 1-8, since they're directly under f1-f8 on my keyboard)

Consider this idea stolen. It never occurred to me to do this.

Will I get banned for boxing!?!?!

lol sure. To expand on that:

I move all targeted mods (guns, ewar, neuts) to 'On-screen highslots', mapped f1-f8

All active mods that usually need to be managed (prop, reppers, cap boosters) to 'on-screen mid slots', mapped 1-8

Finally, active mods that are almost always perma on (dcu, eccm, sebos, tracking computers, etc) to lowslots. They're mapped to numpad 1-8 but i usually click on them

Also, I mapped 'overheat on-screen highslots' to alt + f1-f8, midslots to alt + 1-8.

Do keep in mind that I very often die horribly anyway!

Make space glamorous! Is EVE dying or not? Ask the EVE-O Death-o-meter!

I die in PVP like it's my job, but it's still a blast.
