After listening to a dev talk about a scrapped idea for a grenade launcher to end the blob fest in eve, I also started thinking about the Emperyan Age trailer in which the Minmatar fleet gets obliterated by what really reminded me of a "Little Doctor" from the book Ender's Game. In the book, the "Molecular Disruption Device" (MD Device, hence the doctor pun) fired a charge of energy that caused matter within the impact zone to lose molecular cohesion resulting in total disintegration.

This energy "plague" would actually jump from host to host; potentially wiping out an entire fleet if the ships did not stay a significant distance apart from one another.

I think such a device would be grossly overpowered for EVE - but perhaps a device that did damage to a far lesser degree but based upon the same principles would be healthy for the game and would be yet another reason to stay a healthy distance from one another: the others being bombs and smart-bombs.

Thoughts?

So you say it's grossly overpowered, and then go ahead and propose that it might actually work after all?

No. Nooooooo..... No.

If it did 10 DPS to a target and then every ship within 5km and so on and so forth, it would be horribly OP in some circumstances. And I rather doubt you were thinking anything quite that conservative.

What you are describing is...

- the old Titan Doomsday.
This was removed (and repurposed into a one-shot-one-death weapon) because alliances would "chain" Doomsdays... one after the other... which only other capital ships could survive.

- bombing runs.
Think a small version of the Titan AoE doomsday that can only be launched from a flimsy frigate. One bomb won't kill much (if anything)... but if you spam a whole bunch you can nuke entire fleets.
It should be noted though that bombs have not "broken up the blob" at all. Merely changed what ships people use (instead of using slow battleships and battlecruisers, people use HACs and frigates).
