Thanks for all the thoughts. Gives me a lot to mull over.

Good luck. I am kind of concerned though that new players are being led to believe that exploration is a pathway to riches. It is not.

I have not begun to consider "riches" of any type at this point in the game. Exploration just seemed interesting to me. Lack of cash will certainly play into later choices, so thanks for the heads up.

Happy hunting, all!

Just a heads up if you go to null in a high sec fit heron you can get a lot of isk in your cargohold but 3/5 times you get sploded. I'm having the time of my life here in null with BNI so if exploring is your thing then convo me or snd me an eve mail

Until you have the skill maxed or nearly so, a familiarity with staying alive in low and null, and the patience to compete with every other new player in high sec you will be sadly disappointed.

At this early stage, it might be better to develop piloting and weapon skills and run missions, only fiddling with exploring when that gets boring.

All that aside, exploring is what I do to support my play and I love it.

Yes. Let's push all the new players into the boring grind that is called mission running. That will surely won't make them bored like hell within a couple of weeks and they leave.

Or we let people do what ever they want to do. If their view of something is wrong or clouded, they will find out.

I don't know about you McNasty, but missions, while eventually boring allow you to find out how your ship and it's fittings work. I think early on they are important to a newer capsuleer as part of the learning experience.

So does getting exploded by another pilot ... but at least they're unpredictable.

This.

A player with a proper mindset will learn more from doing risky stuff then running predictable missions.

Sure, you will lose a ship or 2 or 3 or 4 or...well, you understand it.

But if after each loss (and win) you can reflect what you did good and bad, you can improve. Be it in fit, SP or skills (tricks and tactics).

For instance.

Doing exploration in low-sec...get exploded...ooh next time I should check my D-scan more often.
Doing gas mining in W-space...get killed by the sleeper spawn...next time I should start a timer to know when to GTFO cause of the spawn that I triggered.

Yes, missions might let you learn your ship and some basic tactics. But they won't prepare you for the Murphy moments.

1. If you're flying the ship to do exploration, do not fit tanking mods. Don't be brave, don't be stupid. Your cloak and your brain are your tank.

2. When you run a data or relic site, CLEAR IT! Even if there is nothing in the can, just open and close the hacking window twice, boom, and gone. You want the site to respawn, I've had them pop up next door. If you leave un-hacked cans in a site, it won't respawn, and you'll very quickly run out of sites to run (this happens all the time out in nullsec, and yet I still hear the same moron I just saw leaving an unfinished site complaining that he can't make any ISK. Gee, go figure.)

3. Use your cargo scanner in Ghost, or Covert Research Facility, sites. Use your MWD to move quickly, hack the odd-named can while scanning the others, pick the best, hack it, AND LEAVE! Do not attempt to hack three cans.

4. Keep your MWD on at all times. If you see someone decloaking or warping in, you'll have a second or two to double-click in open space & hit your cloak. The MWD will move you a few KM away even while you're cloaked, and you'll be harder to find.

Edit: in order for this to work, you must either orbit or 'keep at range' 2000 meters from your target.

5. Here's a fit that will not only allow you to do exploration & hacking, but also let you wander around Faction Warfare lowsec, picking up drones, which can be quite profitable.

[Magnate, Magnate]
Co-Processor II
Co-Processor II
Expanded Cargohold II
Expanded Cargohold II

Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I
Data Analyzer I
Relic Analyzer I

Prototype Cloaking Device I
Expanded Probe Launcher I, Sisters Core Scanner Probe
Salvager I

Small Emission Scope Sharpener I
Small Memetic Algorithm Bank I

6. Use Sisters probes, both core and combat. DO NOT use a Sisters launcher until you are comfortable running gate camps, and then, only until you can fit a T2 launcher. They're needed on an unbonused hull, not an exploration frigate with a decently-skilled pilot.

7. This is more important than the rest of this wall of text combined: go visit the Eve University Wiki, and get your overview set up correctly. Use your overview constantly, change tabs based upon where you are and what you're doing, and use it to filter your D-Scan results. At all times, have one overview tab set up for an 'All' filter, and update & save that filter after every patch, even the small ones. Use this tab when you are cloaked and trying to avoid people, you don't want to die because you didn't see a corpse floating nearby.

8. Here's the fit I use in nullsec, to give you something to aim for:

[Anathema, Anathema]
Expanded Cargohold II
Expanded Cargohold II
Expanded Cargohold II

1MN Microwarpdrive II
Data Analyzer II
Relic Analyzer II
Cargo Scanner II

Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
Expanded Probe Launcher II, Sisters Core Scanner Probe
Salvager II

Small Memetic Algorithm Bank I
Small Emission Scope Sharpener I

I like having a salvager, just because I come across lots of wrecks. If you'd rather not fit one, then the Helios will probably be a better ship for you:

[Helios, Helios]
Expanded Cargohold II
Expanded Cargohold II
Expanded Cargohold II

1MN Microwarpdrive II
Data Analyzer II
Relic Analyzer II
Scan Pinpointing Array II
Cargo Scanner II

Covert Ops Cloaking Device II
Expanded Probe Launcher II, Sisters Core Scanner Probe

Small Emission Scope Sharpener I
Small Memetic Algorithm Bank I

Salvage Drone I x1

Fit this way, the Helios has immense probe strength, making sites (and ships/drones) easier and faster to scan down.

Have fun, good luck, and let us know how you do!

as a general rule google and youtube are your friends in eve. You should in most cases go there before coming here. I just googled "Magnate" and since it's a real word I had to add "exploration fit" at the end but the first hit was the eve uni wikki page for that ship and the second was a youtube video on how to fit the ship. Eve Uni Wikki is a good place to go for information on everything but especially when wanting to learn about how to fit and / or fly a specific ship.

When ever I answer a noob question my priority is always to give you the tools to find the answer on your own versus just giving you the answer. I hope this helps.

For a new player , data and relic sites are quite a good place to start , obviously there not
goin to be drowning in isk ,but it will pay for them to get into t2 ships
