if thares no gate you can alwese go nyx

The only major drawback is the crazed notion that the inventory would look so much better if merely rearranged ONE MORE TIME.

Totally subjective, and thus I attempted to define it in the OP:

By "fun" I mostly mean something that will do missions fast. Vast amounts of firepower, preferably with little micromanagement.

thus:
1. fast
2. firepower
3. little micromangement

Any colour you like.

True enough.

I'm thankful that the smug, "If you're not doing it my way, it's wrong." crowd is a fairly small group in Eve.

quite the opposite. if your goal was to make the most profit with missions (or any other objectively measurable achievement), you would be surprised at the amount of many know-it-alls coming out of the woodwork. the thing is, most of them have learned to shut the fuck up when it comes to subjective questions like how to have the most fun or which ship is the perrtiest.

I should buy an Ishtar.

I used to make L4s in a Rattlesnake, got bored and decided to try the Hyperion, always wanted to fly it.
Started with Rails and now I have it fitted with blasters and a MWD, it's a lot more fun to make the missions this way, at least for me.

Perhaps something like that works for you too.

rattlesnake.
moderate damage type variability.
strong tank.
1400+ dps not too hard to get.
i normally blap frig/ small stuff with sentries and use missiles on the battleships.

Yes, that's true but with sentries it gets boring to run the missions, other than that it's a great ship.

Can you tell us how do you get 1400+ dps? never got that much in mine...

Greetings dwellers of S&M!

I plan to do some level 4 missions in an attempt to regain my Caldari standings. I can fly most ships, and money is no concern.

So which ship is the most fun to do solo level 4 missions in nowadays?

By "fun" I mostly mean something that will do missions fast. Vast amounts of firepower, preferably with little micromanagement.

Background
I've dual boxed level 4s and 5s (when you could get them in high sec) using a variety of ships. For solo missions, I had fun with a Tengu, but this was before the heavy missile nerf. Have no clue about the current scenario.

If you can dual box, Sheild Ishtars are probably your best bet. They are a breeze to do missions in and require very little micro management.

1400+ DPS rattlesnake is easy enough to get since they changed it. 3 BCS/ 3 DDA in the lows, 5 cruise launcher II with scourge or inferno rage in the highs, your choice of 2x sentry or 2x heavy or 1x gecko drones.

My personal favorite right now is a speed tanked Legion with beams. I mapped the new flight controls to the cursor keys, and they make maintaining appropriate range and traversal quite smooth. No reloading and instant ammo type switching are very nice. I've been using two tracking computers scripted for falloff and a single sensor booster. Just to pay it safe, I fit a damage control II and a medium repper II, but I haven't had to use them since I got used to how it flies in level 4 mission rooms.

For killing stuff fast, the Rattlesnake is probably the best ship, while still having a very decent tank. I've ditched mine and wnt back to an Ishtar tho, as the Ishtar isn't that much slower in killing stuff and you have the high-slots free for two or three salvagers.

Many options.

Sensible ones:
Rattler for raw DPS
Any Marauder for easy bastion tanked goodness
Mach becasue the time saved with extra warp speed makes up for a lot of DPS
ishtar becasue it is awesome and may well get nerfed shortly so may be a last chance to fly a good one

Less sensible option:
Dual boxing some crazy combo like a VNI plus a bomber

I was using a lot of ships for lvl4. In my opinion Machariel is the best. It's fast, agile, insta pops frigs with autocannons from little distance, can pop orbiting cruisers. Does sick damage to BS at it's optimal. And it can hit up to 90k.

Also I am having a bit of fun with Gila.

Don't like Rattlesnake, because it's toooo slow. Turns like a brick and top speed with afterburner is only around 300 m/s.

Mach is still very good because the warp speed plays a big part in mission efficiency. It does very solid dps (1200 easily) with very good on-grid mobility as well so you never have to waste time with MJD triangles or slowboating to gates. Just slap an MWD on there and just MWD up into a group of rats while popping frigs on the way, then drop sentries once you're 30km or so from a group and murder everything. You can easily use the good speed and MWD to maximize your dps, minimize transversal and get to mission items/gates fast.

even with deadspace afterburner it goes 600 m/s which is very good for a BS

with the new definition of fun from the OP, I will also suggest a rattle.

You can burn to gates with a gecko out and MWD on and the damage with sentries and while stationary is incredible.

Price/performance efficiency: Myrmidon.
I'm using myrmidon for all my l4 missions now since I'm fed with the crap state of bs & marauders.

Edit: two-slot armor tank myrm.

imo the drone/missile combo is just a headache, the only way I can manage with a rattler is with a mjd, sentries, and some auto-targeting missiles, or as an assist platform.

I still stand by my earlier answer of paladin, you get to sit there and poof npcs all day long!

Shield paladin, and I'm not even trolling. Doesnt need a huge tank for lvl 4s and its damage application at range is scary. Its a real out the box ship and people will hate it but i love it

if the TE nerf didn't happen I'd be all over that... heck it still is probably a decent idea, I just find it works so well with armor I haven't been all that tempted to try the shield version yet.
