Drake Setup for Mission Running?

Hey guys. I have been playing for about a month now, though I've had my account for much longer. I have always been a miner, and I enjoy doing that, but to train up to my next ship It's going to take a couple months.

SO

In the meantime I got a Drake. I don't know anything about mission running except what's in levels one and two, but I am looking to move up to level 3 with this ship.

As a nub I don't know how to outfit this ship in the least, (except that I need heavy II lauchers) and I don't want to go and get blown up and lose all that time and money.

Can anyone please help me with my build from the ground up? Cry

Here's a basic Drake fit in general. Personally I prefer 3 BCUs and 1 DC2 in the lows, since the SPRs kill your cap regen, but I SPRs are good if you need more tank.

if you are just doing level 3's, the fit mxzf posted (not criticising it) is waaaaaaaaaaaaay overtanked.

you'd do better to fit as many bcs in the lows as you can fit with your skils, and carry a target painter in your last mid slot. makes things go way faster in level 3's with all the friggies.

that fit mxzf posted is massively tanked lol, 3 purger rigs... wow. you could park it in an l4 and not break a sweat.

i would recommend one extender/one purger/one empty rigs for a simple l3 drake fit, and beef up on gank instead of tank. l3's are super gravy in a drake, you are more focused on speed than survivability. SPR's aren't really all that necessary on a drake unless you want to get into a big incoming damage l4.

imo.

I endorse this fit. Pretty much anything you see will be variations on this theme. Things to keep in mind:

  • Usually you're going to want to switch out hardeners. The Drake has enough tank that it isn't critical, but it really helps starting out for two reasons. First, invulns won't give you the same level of resists compared to a specific damage layout, which is obvious. Less obvious: invulns use quite a bit more cap than specific hardeners, and passive Drakes often need all the help they can get on that front.
  • That afterburner is important. It helps not only to position yourself where ever you need to be (approaching the next gate, kiting, whatever) but also to mitigate incoming damage. Leave it on there.
  • SPRs eat your cap recharge. If you need more cap, you can swap one or more out for a Power Diagnostic System. This will somewhat reduce your total tank, but it will help on cap recharge AND on shield recharge (albeit less than an SPR). It also helps on grid, which becomes more strained when fitting T2 launchers.
  • Scourge missiles are usually the best choice at BC4 or 5, but are often not the best choice if your BC skill is any lower than that. If lower (well, train it up, but for now), trade out for the proper damage type. If you're going up against Bloods or Sanshas (and often Rogue Drones), use Thunderbolts regardless of BC level.

Completely true once you're used to flying a Drake, but as the OP is asking how to fit a Drake, I'm guessing he's never flown one before, and has likely never been in a lvl 3 mission. When you're just starting out it's better to overtank and take longer than it is to undertank and blow up.

And what Zhilia said is completely true (I meant to mention swapping out hardeners, but I forgot). The layout I gave is an omni tank.

In general, here are the best layouts of hardeners for different rats:
Sansha/Blood: EM, Therm, EM (I'm less sure about Blood, I don't have the profile on this PC, but that should be right)
Serpentis: Therm, Kin, Therm
Gurista: Kin, Kin, Therm
Angel: Invul, Exp, Invul
Omnitank (Sleepers, PvP): Invul, EM, Invul

Also, to fit T2 launchers on there, you're going to need to cut down on the CPU some (unless you're still using SPRs at that point, which you shouldn't be). This means you'll end up trading some mid or low slots for either named or faction gear (faction, specifically Caldari Navy, is usually preferred, though more expensive).

If your serious your ********, take that into a lvl 4 or a 0.0 sanctum and your dead, bring it against a half decent pvp pilot and your dead. This fit might be able to do lvl 3s and rat low sec but it wont last long in a pvp fight nor can it tank the dmg needed to pve the serious stuff. Jack of all trades fits should always be avoided. Learn to refit.

The other fit posted is a good base and as stated refit according to your skills and requirements, if you tank at 80% shield strip some tank gear in favour of dps.

I actually run many lvl IV's in a Drake fit with much less tank then that - only the two extenders for tank, no invulns. As long as you're going up against factions that deal most of their DPS up close - Angels, Bloods, Mercs, and even Sansha if you're careful - almost eveyr mission is perfectly doable with that fit and some proper kiting, as well as many complexes with those rat types. Sure, you're not going to be tanking the hardest lvl Iv's versus Guristas or running 10/10's solo, but there are plenty that fit can do.

I'm not even going to touch your PvP comment. Suffice it to say that any variation on the nano-drake works fine in most PvP situations.
