Hello all, I'm Isaac (IGN ObiKenobi). I recently moved to EVE after finding myself a bit bored of World of Warcraft due to how many years I have been playing it. Needless to say, 2 days into my trial I was so, so hooked on EVE and having more fun than I ever have with WoW, that I subbed and here I am!

I am currently using a Destroyer class ship (Algos), and doing my best to outfit it with the correct equipment, I know I am not be overly valuable player just yet - but I hope in the near future that I shall have progressed up the ranks a bit and be able to join a guild (you guys call it 'Corporation' right?) and find some people to help me out, and hopefully get into...I think they are called incursions? Whatever you guys do that's like raiding! I enjoy PvE content over PvP most of the time, but open world PvP with friends is always fun!

So I was just curios to find a guild/corp that wouldn't mind taking me under their wing and helping me get on the right path! I prefer guilds that don't have a billion members, as I feel it gets a little less personal.

I am eager to know what incursions are, and if there are any other PvE content that I would be able to jump into with a guild!

- If this is in the wrong place, I am super sorry and shall slap myself on the wrist, please let me know for future reference!

You are always valuable. The key is finding a corp (yes, we call them corps/corporations, not guilds) that appreciates you for what you can contribute. Incursions are challenging PvE and a cool goal to work towards. Good luck!

Check out the Alliance & Corporation Recruitment Center section of the forums. You can make a post advertising yourself there, or find corps that advertise there. There is also some good information on finding the right corp for you here.

I will leave that to the other forumgoers. I'm not super-familiar with incursions so I would hate to give you wrong information.

It's fine. That's what we volunteer moderators are here for.

Coming from someone who was raiding in WoW for years: There is nothing comparable to raiding in EVE.
Incursions are skill intensive (as in character skill points) but in no way challenging. People just run them to earn ISK.

There are incursion focused groups, but usually not corps (guilds) due to how the wardecc mechanics work in highsec.

EVE's PvE is more like those daily quests in WoW - it's there to farm stuff.
Obi-Wan Kennobi wrote:

Open world PvP with friends is where EVE really shines. I'd suggest that you forget about incursions(for now), make some friends (find a corp) and do exactly that. You don't need many skillpoints to blow up in a cheap frigate.
(you WILL blow up a lot in the beginning - just remember: "exploding is learning")

Every player is valuable and you don't need to "progress up" anything to join a corporation.

Welcome aboard.

newbies are valuable from day one.

Couple of things.

1. We are the content in eve, pve activity in eve is marginally more than a faucet of isk (currency).
the meat of the game is the crazy **** we do to and for each other.

2. You are Not supposed to feel safe in New Eden.
someone can always ruin your day, regardless of where you are or what you are doing, it gives the place an edgy fear that many of us fell in love with.

There is nowhere in eve you can avoid PvP.

3. The devs are the biggest trolls here.

4. The forums have been effectively weponised, however you can trust the advice in this subforum as trolling is explicitly forbidden here So if you want answers, get them here.

I suggest not waiting for some point in the future to apply to join a corp. There are a lot of good corps out there that cater to teaching the game to new players. This game is not meant to played alone, and you will save yourself a lot of trial and error if you find a good group of people you can ask for advice. If you talk in Local or NPC Corp chat, you can expect a troll reply, in a player corp, you should expect to find people actually willing to help and get to know you.

Grrr...I'm slipping

Welcome OP. Scratch "guild" and "raid" from your vocabulary and you will fit in quite nicely here.

Echoing the previous advice...Find a corp! I recommend finishing the tutorial (career agent) missions first, to learn the basic game mechanics. Then have a look at that guide ISD LoF linked and find a group doing things that interest you.

Like you I came to Eve from WoW. I've been back and forth between the two games since 2009. I also like PvE content and raided in WoW. I feel that I need to say here this is not WoW I can not stress this enough. If you try to play this game like WoW or try to make it like WoW you are going to be continually beating your head against a wall. How do I know this because I did it.

Things to know about Eve:

You are a valuable player and can contribute to group activities from day 1.

This game is full of helpful players and corps that love to take on noobs and help them get going.

While this game it's self may not very noob friendly from a mechanics level the community is the exact opposite. In this game if you say I'm a noob people will fall over backwards to help you out.

Bigger is not better, Often less is more, there is no level cap there is no best in slot, etc... etc... etc...

The best ship in Eve is friendship.

This game is a true MMO in the sense that it is all about playing with other people. Most content in this game is player created.

You chance of success is increased with how many people you fly with thus the noob friendly atmosphere.

There is no best anything in this game, You will have to develop your own play style and find what works best for you.

Early in the game you will be best served by staying small. Stay away from level 5 skills. You can do an insane amount of things in small ships which train fast. Do no rush into Battleships as a matter of fact you never need to fly a Battleship there are tech 2 and tech 3 ships which are better for most situations. Cap ships most people say are not fun to fly and I think most cap ship pilots are alts. Small and medium ships are where most of the fun is.

"open world PvP" is a WoW term that has no place here. Eve is open world PvP anyone can attack anyone anywhere any time. The only exception is if you are docked in station.

There are no fair fights in this game there are no queueable battlegrounds. Winning in PvP is all about turning the odds in your favor.

Incursions are very grindy and do have the elitist attitude that is endemic in WoW. PvE in this game is not about being challenging it's about isk per hour. Due to the high cost of a ship loss in this game you can't have PvE content that is as challenging as WoW raiding as there is no "running back" or getting a rez. All of the challenging content in this game involves PvP so if you want a challenging incursion run a null sec one for example. Missioning in low or null sec is far more challenging etc..

Uhm.

Plenty of helpful people in Local or NPC chat.

And I can tell you, well over 75% of the player corps have no idea what they are doing or are so narrow minded that anything out of their own comfortzone is a total mystery to them.

So, please cut the BS that local & NPC are always bad and that player corps are always good.

Now, you DO have a point. Being in a good corp (which includes using that guide that was linked before) will benefit you. As you will be among "friends" that will help you.

However, there are many other ways to get help, without shame I will just advertize the HC-R channel (see forum link) but there are many other channels in EVE where you will find helpful people, this includes a lot of the local channels (fixed exclusion of course are any of the trade hubs).

It's just a matter of finding the right people in EVE to help you. I know from a fact that in Clellinon (rookie career system) there are at least half a dozen veterans that hang around and help people with questions and issues (either through the local chat, a private convo or by actually helping them in space).

Also worth noting: Google and youtube are your friends. For everything that you want to find out about in this game there is a guide or many guides or youtube videos or twitch streamers etc... Also eve uni wikki is helpful.

Keep in mind that the above only is true for Ship vs Ship style PvP.

PvP is there in many forms. Some of which can even hit you when docked or even if you are logged off.

You are trading good, even while docked or logged off, someone can manipulate the market so that you lose a lot of ISK in the process. As this is done by a player to another player, it is also a form of PvP.

Hell, in the end. Anything in EVE is PvP in some form or function, some just more obvious then others.

Welcome to Eve!

I hope that you have a lot of fun times in this universe. Hopefully you won't be overwhelmed by everything and you find yourself a play style you enjoy and some fun guys and girls to fly with.

Silently solo exploring, fleet mining, war deccing, null sec roams or low sec gate camping are all enjoyable and equally valid ways to play the game, find what works for you and have fun doing it. :)

Embrace patience, have a laugh with everybody you interact with, enjoy a beer or 50 and turn ya music up to 11.

Peace xxx

it'll take a few months to get into a ship that can run incursions. that said, my son did his first 'frig fest' (doing L4 missions in frigs) about 3 hours after he created the character

So firstly... welcome to EVE.

Second... here is a thread that might help: How did you Veterans start?

Third... there is loads of advice everyone can give you. Some of it in essay format... some of in EXCEL spreadhseets. However, the best way to learn anything in EVE is to simply DO IT. And then try again when you fall face-first into glass filled mud that everyone else is peeing into.

Fourth... here are some common rules (most of which are PvP-related) of EVE:

Rule 1: You do not talk about EVE.

Rule 2: You do NOT talk about EVE.

Rule 3: Never fly what you cannot afford to lose.

Rule 4: Propulsion mods (Microwarpdrives and Afterburners) and Warp Disruptors/Scramblers are mandatory on all PvP ships... unless someone specifies otherwise.

Rule 5: Frigates are fast, Battleships are not. Battleships are tanky, Frigates are not. Fit according to the strengths of a ship.

Rule 6: Tank, Gank, Speed, Utility... choose 2.5 of those when you fit your ship. If you try to fit "everything" at the same time you won't be able to do anything 100% and will die to someone/something else who can.

Rule 7: "Winning" is relative. You can die or avoid a fight entirely and still "win." Just make sure the other guy loses more money and/or time than you do.

Rule 8: Trust nothing and prepare accordingly... yet be willing to take the occasional leap of faith regardless of the consequences.

Rule 9: There are NO RULES enforcing the traditional concept of "fairness" in EVE. Anyone is allowed to throw anything at you as long as they pay the fees and/or penalties (if any) required. However, you can ALSO do the same thing.

Rule 10: Get out there and just do it.

Fifth... I recommend that all newbies start out doing PvP even if that is not what they like. The tricks and tips you pick up from other PvPers will be invaluable as your character and interests mature... because you will know how to better protect your assets from other PvPers.

Just build up a small cache of money, ships, and equipment... research basic PvP fits... go out into low-sec (0.4 to 0.1 systems) and engage people (or let them engage you).
Then talk to the people who killed you (in a friendly manner). Ask for advice on how to become "better." If you show the right attitude they might take you in.

Also... PvPers do PvE and industry too (to afford their stuff). So you can maybe learn from them on that front too!

Welcome to EVE.

ShahFluffers wrote:
Rule 3: Never fly what you cannot afford to lose. This includes what is in your cargo.
I have included a very important addendum that won't matter right away but once you acquire assets others might want to take and you find yourself wanting to move them from point A to B it becomes relevant.

Read this, section 7 in particular.

Also, be careful about giving out RL info, some people take internet spaceships way too seriously and do foolish things when their spacepixels explode. While doxxing is obviously against the rules, it doesn't mean people won't do it.
