I had something really interesting happen to me last night.

Me and Necronomicon2 were clearing anomalies and it was pretty humdrum until we arrived at a particular one.

I warped to it first in my Cynabal and Necro quickly followed suite in his Paladin. When we got there I noticed a lone Tormentor being swarmed by a gang of hostile NPC pirates. He was trying to burn away but couldn't get away from them. I found it really weird how he wasn't warping away.

Necro wanted to let him die, but I insisted that we help him. Necro reluctantly agreed and we made short work of the rats. Necro invited him to our 2 man fleet and together the 3 of us warped back to station.

In warp the guy in the Tormentor explained to us that he was brand new to the game and had accidentally warped to the anomaly while messing around with the menus that displays anomalies and where you select your probes, d-scan, etc. He thanked us for showing up when we did because he was down to less than half his hull, and this was his first ship since the rookie ship he started in.

After docking up, in a private convo I offered to pay for his repairs, which I did. He thanked me and undocked before warping to a star gate and jumping to another system.

I felt really good with myself for helping him. I hope he's doing all right Smile

Anyone here have moments like this happen to them?

Be nice to newbros. Some day they may be the ones coming to your rescue.

When I was about a week into EVE, somebody decided to trust me enough to invite me to their startup corp, help fund skillbooks etc. I learned a lot and am very grateful for that trust. I have learned from experience how hard it was for that guy to trust me and how valuable that makes such trust.

I do try to pay that forward and be supportive of newbs in general. Which can be awkward when all I usually do is fly around looking for people to shoot...

I've been on the newbro side, yeah. I was stuck on Dagan in the SOE arc and asked in local if anyone could help. A very nice older player fleeted up with me, helped me kill Dagan and after gave me a great Algos fit and 10m isk to buy it. Nothing in return, just a super nice guy wanting to help. :)

Hopefully I'll be able to pay it forward someday.

Well, they do have that whole 'killing is a means of' video out.
It's not really a joke, as sometimes the best way to reach someone is through combat.
If they learn from the experience, especially due to you gifting them with shreds of knowledge that you possess it's not a bad thing IMO.

I have on occasion done the same for newbies I initially intended to shoot in the face,
sometimes they just obviously haven't a clue what they're doing and it would feel too much like kicking a puppy in the mouth.

Lets get nostalgic:

Many, many years ago, I mined. First bantam, then osprey.

During the osprey time another miner warped into the belt and convo-ed if it was ok if he mined here too.

Sure. I didnt see myself stopping him anyway. I read up on system security after all my unachored cans were scooped and stolen from a 0.9 system.

By that time I had replaced the badger I lost on the second day I started playing EVE and offered to haul his ore to station. Normally EVE goes all nasty here and somebody ends up in tears, but I don't play EVE that way. He was quite pleased with my offer. As long as he wasnt responsible for my can while I was switching ships.

I then offered to sell all of our ore in one go. Which did made him very suspicous. I explained I already had all of it in my hanger. I sell it all and split the profit.

He agreed.

So I undocked and started making a few trips. Now he was indeed agitated all of a sudden. Weird. And what was he supposed to do?

I sold all of it and gave him his cut.
Which was twice what he expected. How?

I explained that the price for our veldspar was almost two times higher 3 jumps out.

Apart from making his day, I feel I showed someone the way that once.

Saw a yellow flashy in a system I was scanning the other day. There was an ice belt so I figured he was messing with miners. Warped in and blew his catalyst away.

Well, I have to admit ... once. I was reading a forum and these testimonials kept popping up about all this personal stuff happening to people whose lives are evidently terminally uneventful. AND, I refused to get annoyed and slam my keyboard with my mouse. I had no idea I could be so patient.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

You should have watched him die and laughed at him in local.

It's kinder in the long run.

Kinda along those lines, except we blew up the poor sap before we helped him.

Caught a random Osprey mining in a low-sec belt, jumped him with Assault Frigs and podded him too. Then we saw he had just lost the same Osprey not even 2 hours before and he was just a 2 month old character. So we contracted his loot back to him with some pieces of advice.

On the flip side when I was a noob and thought a good fit meant armor plates and a shield boost amp, combined with arties and ac's on my cane. I had just lost my retriever to a gank 2 hours before so I had fit the cane up for mining to earn back some ISK. Then the local can flipper showed up and looted a wreck we forgot to clear. My brother and I decided we should teach him what for, after all, he was just in a frigate, it would never stand up to a cane and a mega. Needless to say my fail fit cane died pretty quick to his Ishkur. Bro got out and fit a warp stab on his mega to grab my loot cause the guy was distracted by the rats that spawned. We learned that day that 1 warp stab doesn't counter a warp scram. He let my bro go at the cost of 3 jokes in local because we had put forth an effort and were new to pvp. Later on the very same guy brought us into his corp and we learned a lot of things about pvp from them. We aren't with them anymore but still pretty close, they help us, we help them.

Guess thats how a lot of stuff goes in this game, you can build friendships based on one or two tiny little decisions, and those friendships can really make or break enjoying the game.
