Seems an Islamic nutter is holding people hostage in a lindt shop in downtown Sydney. Not much info to go on yetStraight

I wonder why bother with hostages? Does he/they really want to waste time with a hopeless negotiation or is it a ploy to get a bigger audience before they start shooting? Maybe a loner with no proper goal, so he just wants attention for his ranting.

EDIT: Could be a failed terrorist attack. Failed to reach the intended target, so panicked and went for hostages.
