Are there a specific reason for having align and approach on two different buttons? Basically it does the same, so the possibility to have them on the same button would be great!

On the surface they seem the same.

However the "Align" button is more of a general "go there" command until you are right up against your selection/target

"Approach" is adjustable... simply right click and set the minimum distance you wish to be at (500m to 100000m). This is handy if you want to maintain a certain range and go no closer/farther.

Many PvPers find it useful to both the "Approach" function to gain range (for kiting and sniping) and then "Align" towards a target for bumps and/or pursuit courses.
I personally use the Approach function when performing Black-Ops bridges and such (so I don't bump the bridging ship).

Nope, there is "approach" and "keep at range". With approach you will just continue until you bump it. Align is supposed to be used at things far away and basically means "go thats direction", which approach also does...

The only purpose I can see for having align and approach separate is that when a target is in warp range, only the align option is available, and you can't align to it if you can't warp to it. It makes it more difficult to get ready to warp when you are in a situation preventing you from warping.

I don't like that, I think they should be merged so we can align to distant ships we don't have a warp-in to, or pre-align to celestials we can't yet warp to. But that's what would change if the two were merged.
