Bad news. Firefox's obnoxious new security features are completely obstructing development and compatibility of EFG with Greasemonkey. Development for Chrome's Tampermonkey is unhindered, but this leaves EFG's future questionable, having to follow one of the following possibilities:

  1. Tell Firefox it sucks, permanently drop Greasemonkey support, and stick to Tampermonkey and Google Chrome. Downside: No Firefox support.
  2. Scrap EFG as a user script, and implement it instead as a separate extension for Firefox and Chrome. Downside: Outside my current expertise, and possibly outside the amount of effort I can/want to dedicate to it.
  3. Scrap EFG as a user script, and implement it on top of an existing cross-browser compatibility addon (Crossrider?). Downside: same as coding it as an extension of its own.
  4. Pass EFG to someone else who can dedicate the time/effort necessary to make it into what it deserves to be. Downside: who?
  5. Declare EFG dead. Downside:Sad

I'm not sure where to go at this point, so I would like to ask you, the users, for your thoughts. So... Thoughts?

Since all options except number 1 lead to efg's death basicly i vote number 1

As I slipped my finger slowly inside her hole, I could immediately feel it getting wetter and wetter.

I took my finger back out and within seconds she was going down on me.

"I really need a new boat," I thought to myself.

Despite being a big fan of FF and using it as my main browser, I tend to browse the forums while at work so I use Chrome there. I'd just go with #1. Once you get that up and running if you have the time and feel like putting in the effort go for #2. Do what you know now and put out a complete, well made product now and do experimenting with new stuff later. Sure, it means you're doing things twice but if you decide you don't want to do a plugin-style later you already have a polished product.

I have also gotten some out-of-forums feedback supporting Option #1, so... Option #1 it is, then! Firefox/Greasemonkey are no longer supported! That felt good to say.

Dropping support for Firefox/Greasemonkey has allowed me to go back to the jQuery-enabled version of EFG and make it compatible with the new forums instead. Since I already had some progress towards doing that, I am happy to say that it is finished and version 0.4.0 is out! Summary of changes:

  • Tweaks and fixes to almost all features to fix them for the new forum layout, link structure, etc.
  • Added support for (forums/gate).testeveonline.com
  • Fixed embedded media bug in which embedded images were not showing up properly.
  • Added better handling and suppression of debug messages (you guys should not see unnecessary debug messages anymore).
  • Added better error handling so a single feature breaking does not break the rest of EFG.

Enjoy!

Edited the thread title to reflect the new version number.

Sad to see support for FF has been dropped, but I do understand the decision.
I have started to use Chrome to moderate the forum, just so I could continue using EFG! Yes, it's that good.

While I am working on other features, I would like to prod you all for your opinions on a major possible feature addition to EFG:

Local Chat Channel

Local Chat would be a small box in the bottom left of the screen which shows who else is viewing the same thread/topic at that time, and lets you talk to them live. This would be completely opt-in; no forcing people into the chat. However, when you're in the chat, you show up in the chat list.

Pros:

  • Better direct conversation, helping with quick back and forth discussions.
  • Better connection with other forum users; a more "fun" experience.
  • Who doesn't want to talk smack in General Discussion?
  • Opt-in, so everyone knows what they're getting into.
  • Bold feature to offer to draw more users in to using EFG.
  • Possibility: include separate thread, subforum, and forum-wide chat channels.

Cons:

  • The "no external communication" bit of EFG would go out the window; a central chat server would be required.
  • Users would need to trust me to be ethical with their communications. I swear I am not Big Brother. However, I would keep logs for accountability purposes (I would rather not enable illegal communication).
  • Chat would be unmoderated by ISD CCL (outside their job) or by me (I have better stuff to do), with all the mess that implies.
  • As per forum rule #35, chat logs may not be pasted in the forums. Users would need to keep this in mind.

What are your thoughts? Would anyone actually use it or would I just be wasting a lot of time writing it?

If you went with the Local Chat Channel I would hazard to say you should make it an IRC. That way there's minimal strain on your server as well as the removal of chat logs from your side thus less space taken up. However, it would be nice (if possible) to store the chatlogs in the temporary internet files for each user.

I like IRC, but unfortunately making it simply connect to an IRC server is extremely difficult to impossible. Reasons:

  • Javascript in a browser cannot do arbitrary network communication. It can only do HTTP type stuff. The IRC protocol is significantly different, so I'd have to "bounce" the connection through my server anyway.
  • I could make my server be an IRC server that knows how to interact with the forums, but that opens a whole bunch of other cans of worms, like security, random channels, and proper behavior when using the EFG client.

So, sorry. I can't make it IRC. I can make it "IRC-like" in usage though, which I was sort of planning on doing anyway.

I can confirm Forum Enhancer has been in contact with us and that I let him know that we would indeed not moderate such a chat channel.
We would however still enforce rule 35. Posting of chat logs outside the Crime & Punishment forum channel is prohibited as we do for any posted chat-log, no matter what the origin of the chat-channel.

Update 0.4.1 is out, featuring a small bugfix to the embedded YouTube videos feature (multiple embedded videos on one page will once again work properly). It also includes s change in permissions to allow
GM_xmlhttpRequest()
, which will be needed for some future features.

Version 0.4.2 is out, with a fix for how canned messages work. Pasting a canned message used to replace the entire text of a post. Now, it will either insert the text at where the caret is in the text (the | looking thing that you type with), or replace a selection if you have something selected.

I just tried doing the same thing and it still works. Are you sure it's turned on? Tampermonkey can turn scripts on and off. When you click on the tampermonkey button in Chrome, the circle next to Eve Forums Gold should be green, not red. If it's red, click it to enable EFG.

If that's not the case, let me know so I can look into it further.
