Are you no more than the sum of your assets? How sad.

Our legacies are more than isk and objects. They reside in our contributions to the wider community.

Pieter,

I don't happen to be the one in a fancy tailored coat. Was it a nice purchase? Did you admire yourself before the mirror? Most certainly you did.

I am as interested in assets as I would be in the mortals I so deride, which is not at all. What I'm interested in is being my own judge, to be judged only by peers who are stuck in the same cage of immortality that I am. You can call this a community, if you'd like, but we are hardly co-residents in an impoverished complex who bake each other cookies and pass the sugar. Our community is passionate and violent, the lengths and breadths of which exceed The State from which I originated, or any others like it.

The so-called others who may feel the impact of my actions? How much time do you spend on the impact you have to the bacteria residing on your jacket?

It was an excellent purchase, very expensive but worth every isk. I bought it because, not only is the tailoring flattering, but my wife likes the way I look in it. The community of my fellow combat-pilots have also been complimentary and I enjoy the nods of recognition and respect that it brings when I walk amongst my fellow citizens.

I regularly cook for my wife, amusingly enough. I do not do this because we are too poor to afford an Executive Chef, but for other reasons that are, perhaps, incomprehensible or unnatural to you. I am aware that I am life and death to thousands - simply looking at those I employ directly or command, indirectly. In the past I have brought an ugly and violent death to many - the crews of well over a thousand capsuleer piloted ships - I like to think I have preserved more life than I have stolen, but there are dark nights when I'm no longer sure. Every single one of both sets of people have mattered - from the pirates right through to the Federal Navy crews.

What was your point?

For the first time since I started the conversation, he looks me dead in the eye. In his gaze are steel jackhammers, quiet vengeance, a hundred thousand orbital bombs frozen in still life.

Pieter,

Indeed, cooking is incomprehensible to me. The liquid I inject directly into my bloodstream cycles across my taste buds, vestigial organs to me, and it tastes vaguely coppery. I often stare at the same metal bulkhead during my daily nutrition intake ritual.

There is a certain warmth to the way you describe what might be a bonding moment with your family. I find it to be a fascinating mental picture. I will contemplate upon your opinion, and educate myself further of this side of life to which I have no exposure.

As a tubeborn creche-child, I have had to learn almost every aspect of family life as I go. I've found the effort rewarding, in my particular situation. It is also true that it provides great motivation and inspiration in times of difficulty.

Pilot Jvpiter,

I've been observing your responses in the various threads on this forum for a few days now, and I must comment, I find your choice of naming for your personal corporation, as well as your fairly blunt reference to the same earlier in this topic, to be rather odd.

You appear to idolize and aspire to emulate the Jove rather then "normal" human beings, but the qualities you seem to espouse as indicative of your inherent superiority to others and your elevation towards "Godhood" - Your lack of empathy and apparent pride in the killing of others, your self-centric worldview, your lack of interest in mortal pleasures - Are, with the possible exception of the third, ones they would very likely hold in considerable contempt.

From all we know about them, the Jove were a very community oriented society, particularly in their later years. Individuals would be encouraged to and quite freely sacrifice themselves, even in ways their myriad means of achieving functional immortality could not reverse, in order the combat the obstacles of their community as a whole, most recently the disease ravaging their society. Further, vicious or unsociably selfish behaviour was extremely discouraged, and much the ability to perform it was even genetically removed. I'm certain you've heard of the Academy of Aggressive Behaviour.

And of course, numerous sources (most obviously the fact that we have the hydrostatic Capsule and modern cloning at all) suggest they had no cultural imperative towards hoarding their advantages for themselves so that they might sneer at lesser "foreign" beings in contempt. Rather, it seems the inverse was true. Especially amongst their own kind, but even beyond that, they sought to bring unison in being and supreme quality of life to all... Which seems to be quite the opposite of your own attitude towards baseliners.

In short, the Jove did not use their advanced technology and ability to transcend the human condition to empower certain individuals and allow them to engage in some sort of hedonistic nihilist transhumanist fantasy. They used it to better themselves, and the world around them, so that they might actually progress even further in the future. If copying their success is your goal, you are doing a frankly poor job of it.

As a bit of friendly advice, I would suggest you revise your attitude a little and perhaps aim to gain some humility. Try to, as you perceive it, to lower yourself to the levels of others occasionally, and consider the impact you make in the communities all around as you go about your business. You never know. You might find it brings you advantages, or if nothing else, is surprisingly fulfilling.

You are a novice - Or I presume so, considering your ID - and I see many individuals with your attitude amongst novices, so it is understandable you feel the way you do. But you should beware. You seem very confident in your immortality, but to be quite frank, I have observed that the pilots who make the least friends and are the most certain of how little that will matter find it to be quite uncharacteristically short.

If not from the hands of others, then their own. And if that does make sense to you already, then it soon will.

As you say.

I will remember such things if I ever do give you insults. But I do not care for improper manners. For the moment, I simply wished to know if your thoughts and how strongly you felt them were truly so.

Ms. Ikiryo,

There is a simple way to reply on subtle jabs with not subtle jab. There is an easy technique to execute it. At first, keep your body and arms loose, do not prepare to jab in any way. Weave your arms slightly and make them tense only during the impact. Do not be ready to hit, so your opponent won't be able to read you and defend against you. Try not to twitch and behave normally. Remember, that the head is the bone, and if you hit into wrong side of it (or they tilt it down, so you hit the forehead), you will just break your own hand. During the jab do not try to make it powerful, but make it rather fast. Move your hand not to your target, but through target. Imagine, that there is no target, that it is a hologram and you need to put your hand through as fast as possible. Release your hand as a spring and move your whole body forward. Do it as fast as you can. The kinetic energy is equal to mass multiplied by speed squared, thus the faster you will execute it, the more energy your jab will have. Any object grabbed into fist will increase the energy as well. Try to not give your intention to jab and do it fast, so they would feel it before they see it. You can practice it on a pillow.

And go for the nose, it quickly teaches them to stop verbal jabs.

Honored are the dead, for their legacy guides us.

Gwen,

Your feedback is thought provoking, and I can see it is provided with candor.

I am certainly quite transparent in what I feel is my own personal progression towards a higher truth. Godlike is a dead word to me, as we exist in the complete absence of God, and so I form a different word, a word that refers to the people who are what God truly is, at the end of it all:

An advanced life form.

I have no desire for hedonism or nihilism, and frankly I do not sufficiently comprehend either. But I do understand what you are saying about my youth and my hubris. Pride does indeed come before the fall.

I will heed your word and temper my disposition. And perhaps I will better understand what it means to build bridges and relationships.

Call me Joe.

You're forgetting softcloning technology, I'm afraid. I once killed Diana Kim with my own hands to find she had actually beaten me back to the Summit channel when I checked my Neocom as I undocked to avoid the paperwork.

The daughter in this drama could quite easily be alive and well.

Sadly, Mr, Tuulinen, she is apparently quite dead as Jaina Deritan's current corporation designation is Doomheim.
