As a seasoned veteran of another popular MMO I am 2 days into a trial of this game and so far I am hugely impressed. A chat channel dedicated to helping new players? the best you could hope for is a response in the game I have come from and it would probably be sarcastic and/or insulting. A GM contacting me voluntarily to check how I was enjoying the game and if I had any problems ? You would have absolutely no chance of that in the game I have been playing. From afking for hours with nothing to do a few days ago playing my old MMO, I am now hugely excited about the prospects of developing my capsuleer down the mirriad of skill paths available to me. ( ps there's nothing in my cargo hold, I promise ^^ )

welcome.

Word of warning,
a lot of what would get you banned in other mmos is considered legitimate game-play here.
that includes (but not limited to) Scamming, theft, Non-consensual pvp and abject humiliation (to a degree).

You are never meant to feel safe here,
someone can always ruin your day in eve (even in highsec).
best make peace with that sooner rather than later.
it gives the place an edgy fear that many of us fell in love withPirate

you can trust the advice in this sub forum as trolling is explicitly forbidden here but is rampant in the other sub forums
(general discussion in particular).

For all the trolling and complaining one sees in other subforums, even this one from time to time, it seems people forget how helpful the devs and the community actually are, especially if one compares this game to other MMOs. I've been around for only a couple of months but have been totally blow away by the dev involvement on the forums and the overall community. Granted according to threadnaughts around here this is a fairly new approach(or it's deemed non existant), but I think it deserves merit. I've not seen one other video game (let alone MMO) forum with quite as much community input as I have here.

Oh, and the ISDs are like a well tuned immune system when it comes to handling trolls. So that helps.

Grrr.

On topic, I've never thought about that.. Until I read your post, I forgot that help channels weren't the norm in MMOs.

This thread, it made me look up my chat logs to see my first ever casual GM interaction. Other games I've never seen the GM's except in the forum making a sticky about damage control due to drama or putting in automated canned responses to your queries. EVE was the first ever game where an actual GM actually talked to a player personally.

Heck I might as well post parts of the (heavily edited) chat of my first ever GM interaction. Looking at it now it makes me feel silly.

Even while giving me general advice the GM's of EVE is asking for actual player feedback(that I hope they'll actually listen too and not just ask them as part of procedure) generally impressed me as a newbie and made me stick to EVE. Heck looking at the dates it's been over a year since I joined EVE. I feel oldShocked.

Post with your NPC alt main and not your main main alt!

I have in WOW back in the days what now seems like an eternity, I was .. ahem ... scaling the walls ... near silithus what was later to become Ahn'qiraj, so this blue robed guy appeared and asked "how did you get here ?" my answer was "I walked" and he was like "well you're not supposed to be here" this was like what is it 10 years since wow was launched a few months before the user numbers just exploded.

As a side note you shouldn't publish discussions with a GM staff as it is a breach of EULA, though I'm not sure how it's interpreted in regarding to what you posted since GM's name is removed.

May or may not have told the GM to shove it because I thought I might be getting scammed when they convoed me the first time. Big smile

Consensual, Ralph. Non-consensual.

No such thing as non-consequential gameplay in my EVE.

This ^^^ truly describes EVE... players don't even trust the GMs.

It also helps to understand how valuable a group of trustworthy capsuleers will be to your career here in New Eden.

OP... Find a good crowd (corp) to hang with and EVE will become even larger than you thought.

yeah, thats actually a really good point.

We are the content in eve, not the npc interactions.
ignore anyone that tells you to avoid player corps.

As a new player, all I saw was a strange person contacting me and offering help for nothing in return, with no proof of credentials. That sets off all kinds of alarm bells in EvE. Big smile

In retrospect it was a bit silly, but a healthy dose of paranoia is always good to carry around with you in EvE. However, just talking to a strange character isn't dangerous really. They really can't do anything to scam you without some concession on your part - giving them items/isk, going somewhere lawless with them, joining their corporation, etc.

So, go talk to strangers. Big smile

Aaah. I never got to speak to a GM (well, not as a newbie) other that one time in Jita when they were doing a test swing to see if they can wield CCP Guard's banhammdr.

Welcome to EVE and say good bye to your social life.

Keep in mind, EVE has the most helpful but also the most rude community in MMO land.
Trust is the real currency...hard to earn, easy to lose.

Dont trust anybody and above all, expect anybody to be against you. Even though people might help you with questions, it doesnt stop them killing you if they have the chance.

I remember a while back, when I was getting a friend to try Eve, a GM got in touch with him and I went into paranoid-mode thinking someone was impersonating a CCP employee and trying to scam my friend. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was an actual GM.

Anyway, welcome to Eve! Good luck and fly dangerous!

As a fellow newly-awakened capsuleer, I can't tell you how much I agree. This game is so... infectious. I'm still in the starting NPC corp and have only done the basic missions and SoE Arc; this content is considered by many to be the most boring part of EVE. The sheer complexity and beautiful intricacy of the game balance alone is staggering. I think this game is a work of art, in many ways. I haven't had the time to really dive into the game, but every day I am reading the forums and some sort of informative guide/post/blog etc. The community, the fear, the risk, the reward, the options, the seemingly endless possibilities... there isn't a day that goes by where I don't read about some aspect/gameplay of EVE that I didn't know about. No other game has ever truly captured my attention and impressed me more than EVE.

I also thought that the early unsolicited GM contact I had was a scam.

Interestingly, I did not think the same of the first corp recruitment invite I received.

OP: We like to be nice here. New prey is always good, but you need to fatten the prey up before moving in for the slaughter. Expect that you'll lose ships, and never undock in anything that would make you upset to lose, and you will love EVE. Don't be *that person* that spends all of their ISK on one ship (a battleship, an exhumer, or whatever) early on and then loses it the third time they undock in it.

And most of all, don't be afraid to ask for help in this forum. Figuring out fits to use is not easy and not really explained well in game.
