Look at how far CCPs development has come

I have been flicking through old Devblogs and came across the one for PI.

The first paragraph made me do a double take. This is CCP describing how their development was planned and announced in the 'bad old days'. This is something they were clearly comftable with as they were happy to describe it in a Devblog.

Quote:
Some of the most exciting days at CCP are when your team finds out what you’re working on for the next release. Teams will already know what the next expansion is about in broad strokes, some will even have heard some rumors through the grapevine about what they specifically will be doing, but for most teams, the element of surprise is at least somewhat intact. The full details are given in a meeting with CCP Hammerhead and T0rfifrans, where they explain their expectations and the team gets to ask questions on how to approach the feature. This is of course also where the full realization of the difficulty and/or time required dawns on the team, resulting either in glass-clinking happiness, mild apprehension or in rare cases, emo rage.

Compare the above to the way Seagull describes development today with input from the very early stages from Teams, CSM and players before a single line of code has been written.

I think we can see that the quality has improved massively since the new approach has been implemented. Thank god for Seagull and CCP Unifex for turning the ship around.

Quite agree. We still have some hangovers from the bad old days. Bright future indeed.

Agreed!

Posted this in another thread, but it fits in here just as well:

CCP Seagull - For the record. This was so many years ago and we have done so much work to reach now. I, as the executive producer, am in a risk taking mode. But, in the new way that we work. Not just random things. We need to be bolder. We should be able to get over our trauma of Incarna. We need to own our game and be courageous with it. I think our players want that of us.

It's time to get over incarna and start taking risks again, educated and calculated risks of course, but we need to make sure that we deliver solid content to veteran players. We have trained players to be afraid of us doing big things. It meant we put something big out that was half done and it never got touched again. Us doing something big, such as industry, means CCP is going to mess it up again and we will have to pick up the mess. We, internally, have become scared in a sense of making bolder changes to the game so that we know we can control the outcome. Because we do not want to be perceived as messing up again. We can predict what is going on. That predictability is boring everyone to death now. We need to challenge and move forward with solid plans owned by teams that are building the vision in their hands. We need to turn up the volume.

I'm still saving up claps for the day they finally manage to replace the POS code. It's like someone made a code salad and then spilled it *everywhere*.

I feel compelled to make a comment about something being introduced then abanded in a panic when the playerbase goes up in arms about it. Something to do with walking in space perhaps?

But i would never make such a comment.

I always read these threads because listening to customers talk about production has the refreshing quality of being entirely insight free.
