How to record gameplay?

I am setting off on a quest to learn to pvp. Problem is, in the couple fights I've been in, I tend to panic, freak out, and die without really having much situational awareness. So I'm going to throw myself into fights until it gets a little more routine and I stop freaking out. I'm not sure how many ships I'll go through to get there as winning isn't expected, but it doesn't matter, though I want to learn as much from these engagements as possible.

I'd like to be able to review the fights afterward, so i can debrief myself, and get the most out of it. But I'm not sure how people are recording the game when they make videos. Is there some software that is recommended?

If you have a GTX 600 or better you can use ShadowPlay to record without killing your CPU to do it :D

Holy hell, I just finished a long process of figuring out how to record games, specifically EvE, for my viewing and possible youtube uploading.

If you only intend on watching the videos locally, I would recommend you use Shadowplay. This is only if you have a Nvidia graphics card 600 series and above.

If you do not have that I recommend Open Broadcast Softwear. It needs a quick 10 min setup to change bitrate, fps and some other details; however, once that is done you only need to launch and click start/stop recording.

This is what I'm currently using. Absolutely fantastic piece of software and lots of options.

Try the trial. It's very, very good and it's (for me) the best software out there that capture the screen in perfect clarity. Shadow Play (as Xercodo has stated) is also good.

If you're after something free and easy, OBS isn't to bad, I didn't get on with it but it works.

People will tell you to use FRAPS, but personally I would stay away from it, my last video was captured using FRAPS and the quality was shoddy, plus it stores the videos in ridiculously large file sizes that fill up your HDD or SSD very quickly.

Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

+1 for Fraps on Windows

On the Mac it's built straight in to Quicktime, so I use that if I'm using my Mac for anything other than scout/links.

I don't have the required video card for Shadowplay, but my PC is fairly solid, but not cutting edge, 8 core AMD/GeForce 465/16GB Ram/SSDsystem drive with 2nd hard drive. Would think it should perform well with whatever. I'm not worried about publishing although I do have PowerDirector for editing video.

Seems like Fraps is the most commonly mentioned here after shadowplay

DXtory is a better Fraps.

If you're just looking for basic recordings, OBS will do the job for free though.

Get on Singularity where most of the ships/mods/implants are 100 isk only. It also has a dedicated system for pvp and testing so you wont need to spend time roaming and such.

FRAPS for me is hassle free and I've used it in many games with no problems. Methinks its the grandfather of all the stuff out there..

If filesize is a problem, just use converters to shrink the original file down to manageable sizes.

I tried Action first, it was strongly recommended elsewhere, as well as here.

I decided to try it and recorded a 15 minute mission as a test and the output quality seems very good and it did not have any noticeable effect on the performance of the game. I used the default settings and 60 fpm gave me an awfully large file, about 20 GB. But I converted it to MPEG4 with Powerdirector and and the result was a 2 GB file without losing much quality. In the future I will probably set it to 30 FPM as I think that is more than sufficient.

I was going to try more than one program, but since I have little to complain about with this one I will probably stick with it.

The very best recording software BY FAR is called FFMPEG. The recorded quality will be crystal clear and the file size super small.
Only problem is it's not exactly for beginners. And by beginner I mean "Oh I'm l33t at computers! I can shut down the computer from the command prompt!" kinda beginner.

It's a pain to set up on Windows since it's a CLI software, but on Linux it's as easy as grabbing it from your distros repository. And the thing that makes FFMPEG amazing is you can define EVERY parameter of your recording, which screen to record (if you have multiple), video/sound format, codec, frame rates etc.. etc.. All from one command, without the need to fiddle around with point and click advanced options of other recording software.

I know OP probably uses windows, but with some patience it's worth setting up. Once you do you will look back at the time you used FRAPS and facepalm so hard.

Lastly, I might add though that if you have enormous amounts of free HD space, and fast write speeds then by all means use FRAPS, if FFMPEG is too much :effort: to set up.
