Can we have an option to hide the Compass?

Surely I'm not the only one who finds the Space Compass rather annoying?
I want to use my sensor overlay, but I don't want the HUD to be surrounded by coloured dashes.

Obviously, the EVE interface is already highly customisable.

We can:
-Hide the sensor overlay
-Minimise each individual 'window'
-Hide the HUD buttons, and modules
-Turn off the new notifications feature
-Hide the Neocom
-And we can remove any annoying Brackets from our UI

But we can't obscure the Compass Indicators without also hiding the sensor overlay.

I realise that the Compass is integrated with the sensor overlay options, but can't we have some sort of option to hide the markers separately?

To be blunt, not likely. CCP (again, being blunt, so forgive me CCP) has a nasty habit of not including "opt in/opt out" choices when it comes to new features, be it one that is easy to simply ignore anyway or one that in right in your face and replaces something else that was better anyways. They will at times give temporary new/old selections for certain things, such as the notifications prior to Phoebe, but this is rare and often gets removed once it officially makes it past its "beta" phase.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

Mmm...
I presumed that was likely the case.

This feature just doesn't flow well with the interface, in my mind.

Oh well. I'll make do.

CCP introduces feature A, includes toggle A.

CCP introduces feature B, includes toggle B.

....

CCP introduces feature X, includes toggle X.

and so forth. The UI and config menus are already tricky enough to work out, thorough customization controls would just make it more of a clustered nuisance. I bet if you turn off all the markers you won't even notice the compass given a week or two.

CCP has already stated that having options like this is a "cop-out".

After much reflection on this, I have determined that "cop-out" in Icelandic must mean: "too hard"

That or :EFFORT:

TBH I'm not surprised we have yet another annoying UI feature. The Eve UI has been poor since forever and now it's merely become cluttered. Or one may even say, a cluster F.....

Maybe they can add large tooltips to the compass. That should fix it Smile

CCP, there are off buttons for ship explosions, missile effects, turret effects, etc. "Immersion" does not seem to be harmed by those. So, please give us a persisting off button for the jump gate and autoscan visuals.

they consolidated some of the options to control the overlay into the dial menu, removing the dial as a toggle, would require having also an alternative way of configuring the overlay. i guess that's their excuse.

the whole thing could be made easy by simply having a the full toggle on the overlay also hide the dial, but the problem is that would divide the player base into people who use the overlay as a source of info/interaction and people who are completely oblivious to it. this would leave no room to use the overlay as a source of "gameplay".

they haven't done it so far, but all the improvements to the overlay suggest they might move stuff from the overview to the overlay, completely... something that would be a catastrophic move if you ask me. and a complete idiocy seeing that after almost a full century of human R&D we still haven't found a better way to present information for human review in a timely fashion other than tables.

overlays are stupid, gimmicky and **** game play. and quite possibly the worst way of presenting information for a player to make tactical decisions on.

mark my words, CCP will try to remove the overview and attempt to turn EVE into a generic space game built around the artificial gameplay constraints of poor information. (also know as "dogfighting") only being proactive as players will stop them. there's no other reason as to why they would invest time and money on attempting to "improve" the overview.

This is indeed the crux of the matter. We want to offer the ability to customize features and sometimes when appropriate hide them but that is not always the best approach. Always including the option to wholesale turn off features makes it difficult for us to maintain a consistent experience.

We have the option to customise the interface in so many ways. Part of that comes with hiding some certain features from view.

We can:
-Hide the sensor overlay
-Minimise each individual 'window'
-Hide the HUD buttons, and modules
-Turn off the new notifications feature
-Hide the Neocom
-And we can remove any annoying Brackets from our UI

Or you know hinders the way your paying customers would prefer to play your game... You say tomayto... I say tomahto

Personally I think this is the perfect chance for you guys to truly THINK about UI design in terms of configuration. At this point I'm sure some people would settle for a simple text field that you could dump an XML list into to decide all the things they want to set. Think about all the mods for games that exist in places like Nexus to make the UI do different things. (Xcom needs to go die in a fire for all the information they hide) If you aren't going to put forth the effort to make a decently configurable UI then you should at least make it MOD-ABLE. But I likely don't see either happening which is pretty damn sad.

If nothing else I think you guys need a priority check. a consistent experience isn't at the top of any gamer's list these days. I'm sure if you gave people the choice in one of your surveys between consistency or configurability that the results would weigh heavily to one side.

Stop being OS X /Apple and be more like MS on a good day like Win 7 and give us choice already!

I really don't understand why so many people are allergic to spacial awareness. Just turn off the bookmarks and live with the extra few pixels of black around the edge. Space is dark, the compass is dark, you'll forget it's even there in no time.

Good. That means you should have no problem giving us the option to turn off your nausea-inducing camera-swinging jump animation right?

Because "cop-out" isn't a valid or meaningful response or even a decent excuse when you've got a near-100 page thread going where people are just asking for options. That leaves difficulty or ego as the reason you won't do it, and you just basically stated it's not because it's too hard. Big smile

You could always blame a lack of options due to everything being tied to the POS code.

I like the bookmarks in space.
However I don't know what I'm supposed to do with that compass thingy. It only tells me, "there is lots of stuff in space around you".
It doesn't help me find the direction of a site quicker, because I can't distinguish them on the compass.
E.g. if I ranged a ship via d-scan and want to check with a small angle scan if the ship is in a certain anomaly I still have to turn my camera like a mad man to find the direction of the anom, because I don't know which one of the two dozen green blobs on the compass is the anom I am looking for.

OK, it looks fancy, but how do you actually USE it for anything?

I find it can help give you a better idea of the shape of the system, where one thing is in relation to another, which can shorten up calculations about the location of a hidden object.
Some people don't work this way, i can understand that, but these new colored blobs are helpful to others and they love em.

Quite honestly, there are two kinds of people (as far as I've counted anyway) who just don't get IT.

1. The entitled whiners who cry for refunds for SP, gametime or ISK the moment something is either changed or removed.

2. The people who ask for a toggle button for absolutely EVERYTHING.

Change happens all the time, this includes major game mechanics and HUD elements. Hell, the new UI announcement has barely been up for a few hours and already there are idiots in that thread and on Facebook asking CCP to create a toggle for using the old or the new UI. Do you people not understand this is not how it works? If these people had their way there would be a toggle to go back to the 2003 version of EVE.

Seriously, stop asking these stupid things. You're draining IQ points from everyone who reads the thread.

This is the correct answer.

You only notice it because it is new.
