A small idea to promote use and defense of sov space whilst removing the use of blue sbus to block attacks on sov;

Set sbus to have a timer (say over a 2 week period) during which they degrade the sovereignty of the system they're active in, regardless of who drops them.

eg. You have sov and drop one or more sbus. Over the next 2 weeks your sov drops to 0 at which point you lose sov. The same would apply to hostile sbus in an identical way. Recovery of full sov is the exact inverse. If you have sov degraded by sbus for 1 week, then it would take 1 week to recover full sov after their removal.

This should help lead to a use-it-or-lose-it situation and prevent exploitation of the current sbu mechanics.

+1 to idea in overral, maybe bit differently implemented.

Sure if sov fees are removed at the same time.

Yes, the idea is that sov ends completely - all benefits and costs disappear.

Details are obviously open for all opinions as is the general idea, but it would seem a simple solution to one small aspect of the null sov problem; more low hanging fruit with hopefully a small coding cost.

IMO it the SBU's should drop ALL sove upgrades as soon as they are online. Or maybe like few hours at maximum. Would force ppl to actually defend their systems, if someone would be to attack them.

I believe that OP's idea does not replace the current mechanic where having SBUs on two-thirds of the gates in a system will render the existing sov structures vulnerable to attack (and the sov with them). It simply deters people using defensive SBUs as an additional (and unintended) structure grind to "punish" attackers before any actual attacking can be done.

Not entirely. If non-hostile sbu's are dropped then it degrades your sovereignty, this much is clearly a deterrent and your assertion is correct thus far.

If hostile sbus are dropped then it means the sov holder has to be active in removing them within a constrained time period or suffer some form of attrition. Current mechanics hold no attrition; there are a set number of encounters that the sov holder has a degree of control over. If they overcome any one of these stages then all is normal both before and after.

If they ignored a degrading sbu for a period then it will take that same length of time for their sov status to recover. If the hostiles immediatley replace the sbus the degradation counter continues to tick down forcing potentially many more fights over a much more varied time frame.
