Came back to Eve, still feeling overwhelmed

Okay I spent the night trying my hand at exploration. A lot of my night was spent in lowsec (.3-.4) and I spent time figuring out how to make safe zones and such - kind of a learning night all in all.

Results (3 hours):
1 Relic site - recovered about 800k from there
1 Data site - recovered about 200k from there

Lots of Wormhole sites and lots of combat sites which I didn't do, I just let them sit. How do I handle those? Do I bookmark them and then warp to them with another ship? I also don't know what to do with wormhole sites.

I figure I would have a lot more income from tonight if I worked inside the wormhole and combat sites.

One last thing - I was hacking a data site and multiple times, even with virus strength and whatnot, I would get a hacking failed message. It didn't seem like there was anything wrong, but maybe that's just a part of it?

Some combat sites would kick my ass, never mind yours, use this site to find out how badly beforehandBlink

Worst case scenario in a wormhole....well.

That was an awesome thread.

Now, though the PVE content is perhaps still just out of your (mine as well) grasp, one thing you can do is just jump in and explore in a literal sense. When I'm in the mood for some quiet gameplay I like to probe a WH down and just hop and scan around until I find another WH and keep going until I get bored. Kind of zen, I think of it like taking a quiet walk IRL, but in space.

Plus, you may find yourself an exit into some quiet corner of 0.0, you can then try scanning for relic and hacking sites out there too since they are far more valuable, all while keeping your eyes glued to Local chat (free intel, when you see a bunch of people coming in: fleeeeee!) and the D-Scanner.

One other thing to keep in mind is that there is a random element to exploration, it's not the most consistent of income stream from what I gather.

Here is some help on the hacking mini game from the EVE uni wiki (CAUTION: info dump incoming, take your time with it):

EDIT: added info dump

Grrr.

I can see that I have a lot to learn before I even jump into a W-space location. So that's off the table for now. Is there a way to tell what combat sites have waiting for me inside? If I skill up so I can fly a frigate well, I don't want to jump into a combat site that should be battleships and above.

Edit: NM I see the link above, good resource to have - I'll have to consolidate these links at some point so I have a nice eve folder of links too.

Edit 2: How does this work then if I find a combat site I want to explore. Do most people who explore keep a second character with a ship nearby (and skills trained?) Or is it easier to jump back a few systems, grab a second ship that I have trained and then fly back to the site in the system I have bookmarked?

In W-space you can make and loss a boat load of money also since W-space has no local it means you cannot ever know for certainty if you're alone, also Sleepers love to lick your bones and suck the marrow and throw in the rest for BOB.

It's easy to get overwhelmed as a new player if you try to do everything at once. The first thing to keep in mind is that it's a game and as such should be fun. So start off by just trying different things and focus on what is fun for you.

Unless you are strictly minning and hauling or doing market / industrial stuff if you are undocking in eve then combat skills are pretty basic and a good place to start. As a rule I found that your best defense is a good offense so I'd focus on only basic tank skills to start and put more skill points into damage. If you are interested in PvP you'll most likely want guns as a primary weapon and I think the general gunnery skills are important meaning things like tracking and range. However you will need drone and ewar skills as well so just stay general early on and train what you need and what trains fast. You'll get a feel for a direction that you want to go after a while.

One of the "mistakes" I see a lot of newer players make is to try and get into the biggest ship they can as fast as they can and they wind up in a big slow as battleship that they don't have the skills to fly effectively and don't have much fun in it. You can do a lot with small and medium ships and especially with T3 you can do everything you want in this game with out ever sitting in a battleship and BSs take lots of skill points.
