Very Perculiar Computer Reset.

Hello all, Just putting this out there to see it im the only one this happens to.

Just as i am spamming the dock button, i hear 'docking request accepted' then my computer loses power like id hit the reset button.

This has happened twice now (out of hundreds of docks where it didnt happen) and i would be looking for hardware related faults if it hadnt happened at the identical moment of docking in a station. This has never happened out of game or in another game and my computer is otherwise very stable.

So there it is, wierd rare computer reset when im docking.

Anyone had this?

sounds like it *could* be hardware related. But maybe not..

I would be taking a good look at your PSU, as there could be a power spike at time of docking as the cpu/gpu flatline then spike back up to 100% for that split second.

Could also be lots of otehr problems, but never heard of this issue before so naturally, would be troubleshooting hardware first.

Maybe its a heat related issiue on your computer.
As the memory and processor start to have a bit higher load to load station environment or captains quarters and station services, your allready significantly heated motherboard starts to overheat and automatic reset set up in BIOS when certain temperature limit is reached, kicks in.
Or maybe even your gpu is overheating.
That is what comes to mind at first.

Fiddle a bit with temperature sensors and readouts in windows and f9 in boot up to fiddle a bit with your BIOS settings.

I'd start with video settings - because obviously something is happening to your video card(s) when the game tries to switch from "space" to "station" mode and triggering the error. Set video settings to the lowest possible and see if you still get the error condition. If it's a desktop and you can swap out the video card for another one/make sure it's seated properly, etc, do so. Assuming all drivers are up to date, etc.

Questions.

Do you play in fullscreen mode?
What's your interval setting?
Are your gfx settings at highest and does it occur when they are at low?
Do you dock into the CQ or the ship-spinning environment?

It's probably your GPU either crashing or overheating. Check your systems event logs around the time, as the driver will normally throw out an error if either of those things happen.

I had a similar problem with my old machine, It would constantly turn itself off.

The reason behind this was because the Thermal Paste between the CPU & heatsink had all dried up. Meaning the CPU was over-heating at extreme temperatures. I use Speccy to get a rough idea of my CPU temperature. Yes.. my own fault for not checking sooner, Doh... Shocked

WARNING:

If the Thermal Paste has bonded the Heatsink to the CPU & you apply to much force to remove one from the other, the CPU pins will get damaged. So if you feel this is the case, i wouldn't attempt unless you truly know what ya doing.

Clean your PC's CPU and GPU heat sinks and clear any airflow obstructions at least 2x per year and you can prevent or correct a lot of "random" problems like this.

There's some good advice already in the thread, but I'll throw in my 0.02 ISK. My computer was having similar behavior right before I fried my power supply. After the fact I re-figured my math and it turns out that I was only borderline providing enough power after a CPU and graphics card upgrade.

You could also be looking at overheating, but that usually causes a computer to shut down, not restart.

My PSU is a Corsair AX860i with a USB link. While played eve the maximum load from the socket is 300 watt at 91% efficiency.

The PSU is good for 860 watt and is running so cold it doesnt even spin its fan. Processor and mobo are all very well cooled with a H80 water loop on the processor staying 10°C below max temp under stress test at well under its max VCORE, memory well ventilated and also running at 2000Mhz instead of 2133 so essentially under-clocked. I havent really monitored my graphics card temps but im aware it is under a heavy load at times. However this too seems to run will within limits while being stress tested and no signs of instability.

PC was taken apart cleaned and rebuilt last month inclusing a wet wipe down of all fan fins and wash of water cooling radiator.

This is why im looking at other things beyond the hardware and wanted to see if anyone else was having this phenomenon.

Though all good suggestions. Ill keep an eye on it to see if the pattern develops since its a relatively rare event.

I play fixed window on 2 monitors with 2-6 accounts. 2 full screen fixed windows and up to 4 half screens brought to front as needed.
My interval is whatever is the equivalent to vsync on, though im updating atm so cant check.
All the accounts are on highest settings just no camera shake.
I always use hanger, never CQ.
