Tips and tricks for improving framerate in certain situations?

Hi there! I've got a reasonably beefy gaming laptop. As such, 90% of the game runs buttery smooth. It's beautiful.

However, times when I'm in space and near something with a lot of effects, such as on missions where there's an exploded something or other and a big cloud of stuff surrounding it, my framerate plummets into single digits. Similarly, when in wormholes and fighting sleeper camps, the cloud effect at the center of their structures gives me trouble.

Are there specific settings I can tinker with to improve my framerate in these situations without sacrificing anything in the rest of the game?

I think GPU Particles is what you are looking for,
if you want to deactivate the cloud effects.

It's a particle effect, in the end.

Because of gas clouds or dust particles in missions, I normally just zoom completely out as much as possible... Usually gets me a 60 FPS up from 20-30

You could be running EvE on a holodeck from Star Trek and it will still drop frames to the floor around that stuff. Bet Barkley would have a fatal anxiety attack after that.

Ah yes, the clouds. I remember when they were more of a problem than they are now.
They used to be all over the place, doing the same thing they do now, trying to murder people's computers. That being a problem was acknowledged and some of the clouds removed, in an effort to get us to keep giving the developers our money. However, a few were left in, just to let us know it wasn't a personal thing, and that they still hated us. Sort of like in the bible, where that God fellow hangs up the rainbow to let people know he won't try to drown them all at the same time again, while never saying anything about individual drownings. I don't know if they ever put in an option to turn them off.

There really is no nice way to say that this used to be more of a problem, but when they acknowledged it and did something about it, they chose not to fix the problem entirely, but just in some places.

Turn off all the things, because graphics are for sissies.
I pretty much couldn't tell you what EVE looks or sounds like, because I untick all of the boxes as a matter of course, just in case I'm ever in a situation where the framerate might drop out and cause me sadness. I can't even ship spin in stations, because that's turned off too.

And, your ISP sucks.

Pro tip: Zoom way far back till the system is a sphere, then use your overview. That's what it's for.

Paradise is like where you are right now, only much, much better.

That turns off the dust clouds. But just be aware it also turns off effects like the Neuting and Scrambling and Web graphics and also things like the shield / armour boost / resistances. Nothing major persay as the icons are still there for you to see. Unless you really really can't play without them.

My effects box has been unchecked since you could turn dust clouds off with it...

Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

Maybe we should stop mentioning it, and it will get a overhaul for no reason like it happened to sounds.

I just wish they could find a way to turn them off without sacrificing half of Eve's other graphics to do so. I just can't find a happy medium between good looks and good enough performance.

Turn them off, and even with everything else on that can be at highest, my card never hits 50 C degrees, frames never budge from 60, but the game looks like a half finished design. Even my old 550Ti could handle that like a boss. Leave them on with HDR/Post Prcessing/AA off, walk into a cloud and my card burns hotter than the freaking sun in a matter of seconds. It's the only time I ever drop bellow 50's for frames, but at least Eve looks smexy, right? Yes, my card isn't a $500 one, but holy tap-dancing Christ.

tl:dr...
I still HATE GAS CLOUDS! They are still eating my cookies!

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

I have the GTX 550TI also. Just requires constant attention with keeping the fan clean.

But if you placed actual cookies on your video card, they'd be nice and warm after the mission, and a nice warm chocolate chip cookie is a much better reward than some piddly ISK.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

CCP simply needs to add a slider in the graphic options that lets you adjust the total particle count (nebulas). The default particle count is so dense that in other type of virtual environments it is called 'spam' and 'particle griefing'.

I have no fps issues at all, but those dog dang clouds are plain annoying. It is bad design if you are forced to zoom out +100km just to have a bearable fps.
