Understanding Null and Batphones

I have seen a few threads, but wanted to ask a bit of a different question.

I see most of the major coalitions/alliances: CFC, N3, Brave, Provi, etc.

However, all I hear about is how one or the other has either PL or BL on their bat phone for assistance. Why is that such a big deal, and are these two organizations that significant of a game changer that the alliances need them? Just seems one or the other always comes in and saves the day and most of the big fights happen with them.

With that being said, what is the benefit of joining a null SOV alliance like the ones posted, over joining PL or BL? I'm interested in PVP, good fights, and having some null space to carebear in to make iskies on down time.
