Cynic. I'm gonna go watch it again.

My point is; so what if they do take offense?

Why is that more important when its meaningless?

If I take offense at your name, does that mean your name is now inherently bad, or does it mean Ive chosen to react to it based on my own values which (by definition of most agreed on moral philosophy) I have no right to impose on you?

So taking offense at someone's name is meaningless because it imposes your values on that person?

That isn't what I said.

I asked if offense was more important than tolerance when the thing that is called offensive has no inherent meaning.

But you asking your question suggests that you think I would perfectly rational if I stated your name offended me for some equally meaningless reason.

Ah, so what you're saying is that taking offense at someone's name is meaningless if you think their values are meaningless.

Not everyone considers all the reasons to be offended as universal.

No that's not what I said either. One more go;

Why is the word "Anal" offensive to you?

That's sure what I gathered from what you wrote. And I don't particularly find "Anal" offensive, nor do I understand why it's at all relevant.

This game is made in Iceland, they're kind of finicky about names over there.

I don't mind seeing crappy names get flushed. Pucker up, all you players with stupid names. Roll

Anal Canal is just another way of saying Arse Hole, a character called that is unlikely to keep it's name as well.

Didn't really want to say that, but that seems to be more to the point.

Obviously. What's not relevant is my personal opinion on it in the context of your post.

But by all means, continue with your word play trolling.

So, someone who created a character using language a 9-year old boy might come up with finally got their name changed by CCP?

So what? Cry me a river OP, these buckets ain't gonna fill themselves.

If by "word play trolling" you mean putting forward a point of view that you haven't understood and are now trying to insult me for, then ok.

Considering you did say that personal opinion was the delinator of offensive, I should think that your opinion on the actual topic of the thread is very relevant.

If it isnt, your participation here is, by default, either to derail or to troll the thread.

How many people taking offense does it require before those values start to be worthwhile?

...and who decides what is worthwhile and what is not? If only 1 person takes offense, Im sure that 1 person still thinks his values worthwhile. Everyone believes their own values to be worthwhile, which is why it's silly to throw a bunch of words under the umbrella of "being offensive." I would wager a bet on the fact that most people who are offended by "bad words" only feel that way because they've been told all their lives that said words are indeed "bad" without giving any thought to the notion at all.

Personally, I don't believe any word to be "bad." I mean, cmon... "I pooped" is acceptable but "I just took a s**t" is not? How can one be bad and not the other if they both mean exactly the same thing? IMO people are way too easily offended, and we have an epidemic of people believing they have a "right" to not be offended. I find the notion quite offensive. Smile

If that was a "point of view" then maybe you should follow the logic of the discussion a bit more instead of just throwing out whatever first comes to mind. You've said that when someone takes offense at something it is meaningless if it does not ascribe to a set of values you are defining. My own point of view is irrelevant, the flaw is in the logic of using a single person's value system as the definition against which all others should be judged.

I agree, but I think that CCP has to walk a fine line where they enforce words that the majority find offensive, yet not too many or they risk marginalizing those who value their freedom of expression more. Ultimately, it comes down to the personal gm decision based on petitions sent in by players, because there is no other way to get those moral definitions.

No I didnt. Thats the third time you have tried to make that erroneous assumption now and the third time I have denied it.

You obviously have no wish to have an adult conversation about this, and all you seem to do is try to insult anyone who disagrees with you.

I have asked you directly about what you think of the thread, the OP and what is being discussed in order to put it into the context of what Im explaining, and this, according to you is "trolling".

I cant possibly begin to imagine what you qualify as as actual discussion given that basis, and so I can only conclude this derailment on your part is the purpose of this discussion.

Bah... most new players aren't easily scared off or naive.... they've played other games, mostly combat games, and aren't easily intimidated by the candyasses we know and love in EVE. P

Nothing to worry about, aside from the ongoing "brain drain" in devs.
