So I've just started to get into Exploration after a long break from the game that has effectively rendered my character a noob, and I'm finding it surprisingly thrilling, actually P

In particular I'm running nullsec and lowsec mostly. Sometimes the loot is amazing (70 mil per can, I felt like a king after that haul), more often than not it's awesome but I blow it up (crap Hacking skills) and sometimes it's hilariously bad (1 unit of Carbon has to be rock bottom, unless I find an armed bomb in the next can!)

The funniest thing, though, is how it seems to enrage the local populace of anywhere in low/null sec I go. I played a low sec pirate for the longest time on an old character, and I never made people anywhere near as irritable or desperate to murder me as I seem to as an explorer Lol

Thus far I've separately been accused of "hiding", "sneaking", and my personal favourite: "cowardice" (for not fighting a T2 frigate in my unarmed ship ShockedLol )!

And I embrace all of these things. Arkus Kane: Coward Who Avoids Certain Death.

So yeah, any rookies looking for fun and loot, I really recommend null exploration for giggles. You feel like a champ if it goes well, and if everyone hates you and you die horribly you don't lose too much cash/time :)

Any veteran explorers got fun tales/tips to share? :D

Not only do you get to waste their time and mock them while you're making isk and they aren't, but you can also cost them quite a bit without firing a single shot flying the right ships in the right areas.

Bear baiting is a Galactic Explorer Tradition.

As a sabre pilot who makes his living killing explorers in null sec I say bring it on!! The more the merrier!Twisted

Have you heard anything I've said?

You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?

That's right.

Had to end sometime.

Oh, the CovOps is something I'm working on ;)

Also, I just learned a valuable lesson: Sleepers may have shiny metal plates that look astonishingly pretty, but staring at them for longer than 15 seconds is not a good idea in a Magnate Big smile

Cannot wait to go wormholing again. I'll log any more excitement here ^^

I went exploring once. For about 3 weeks. Found nothing of value whatsoever, and didn't have any interactions with other players until I went AFK on a gate because I alt-tabbed out and forgot I was playing EVE. I was so tired of it I actually appreciated the quick trip back to highsec.

Scanned stuff. However, the spot for the Scanner left my Magnate light on propulsion, and the time it takes to fly 50-100 km to a can has made me swap my fit for an AB/MWD instead.

So now I don't know if the can will have 50 mil of loot in or a lonely lump of charcoal...but I can get to it about 5x quicker, so it's largely irrelevant Big smile

AB over MWD for 0.0 though, helps me get out of any bubbles I get in quickly if the system is empty.

EDIT: Oh right, you probably meant that guy Cool

No interaction with others? Shocked

Clearly you were in the wrong systems. Practically everywhere in null I go is either empty, or crammed with people who would probably sacrifice a Titan if necessary to bring down a T1 frig Lol

I find it perplexing actually, the guy that nearly caught me in a site the other day didn't bother doing the site. It had about 80 mil of stuff in (I scanned it before I jumped out). Instead he chased me in his faction ship through 5 or 6 gates, when my ship was worth 1,000,000 at the most.

I know killmails are cool and all, but just saying P

I know that feeling well. Yesterday I found a nice wormhole that jumped me into null sec. I collected 20m from the first relic site, which was nice - each can being worth about 10x the amount one can expect from an entire hi-sec site. I then located an easy complex in the same system and made a start. It took me a while - I blame the Alliance tournament for distracting me - and then some CFC-type dropped in and started probing. I cloaked up. He kept probing, even in the middle of some really exciting matches (Roll). I wondered how long it would take for him to get bored....

...and then I noticed I was in a system with a station and four gates. At that point I figured I was never going to escape attention and he knew where the complex was (not that he finished it - and it was so close to the point where the overseer spawned). I warped to my wormhole to return home and it disappeared. Which was quite upsetting. I spent the next hour trying to get through 0.0 to Obe, but decided it would be safer to find another wormhole.

All the gate campers along the route got very excitable - chasing around, flying to planets and belts, dropping probes and bubbles. I eventually jumped right across to Detorid and then into low-sec Ammatar and set a 40+ autopilot home while I watched the remainder of the tournament.

Shame I didn't finish the complex, but I think it was worth it for me. Like OP, I was also surprised that the gate campers just sat there idly for hours, occasionally sniping a noob frigate, with hundreds of millions of isk floating around in space in the surrounding systems for anyone to steal.

Filthy hobbitses etc.

Hmmm...I get the idea some people "explore" looking for specific things, not just to poke around to see what's out there. I've poked around to see what's out there, but my paranoia reaches epic proportions. So, I bookmarked the location, promised to make it back when I'm better equipped, and...wound up with a sh*tpile of bookmarks. Call me chicken.

Paradise is like where you are right now, only much, much better.

Yeah I know how it feels OP.

Been flying an interceptor explorer on Null (Align troltime 1.8 plus I ain't afraid of no bubles), but it's not really about money - frankly I can do more by just running missions. The truth is I just want to learn how to travel through hostile sectors for my future PvP activities and I of course want to "see the universe" (You can get some great scenery on your travels - planet's/WH's/space backgrounds/You name it - I even have a special playlist to listen while traveling. Yeah yeah I'm a romantic EvE player).

However I wasn't expecting tears. (That weren't mine at least)

The amount of bickering/death threats/mom insults and boderline rage a 25m ISK ship armed with 2 small hybrid turrets and no warp scramble is able to cause is just unbelivable.

I think "exploration" neatly encompasses both. It gives me a challenge (site scanning, staying ahead of brutish prowlers) plus the potential for cash while also allowing me to roam the stars instead of camping in 2-3 systems in stations.

In fact, doing more wormhole leaps lately and I quite like that I can disappear totally off grid and come out 40 jumps away. It's really stopping me from sitting in one region buying and selling, which is profitable but dull as dishwater.

My advice is:

1. Buy a cheap scanning frigate.
2. Get reasonably good at probing sites out fairly quickly if you aren't already (practice for an hour or two in high sec).
3. Take the attitude: "RICHES OR DEATH." You're not losing 50 mil every time you get ganked, so relax and enjoy it :)

Funny really. I've been chased a bit in null but never really got any moaning/rage/bitching from anyone. I tend to get into null via wormholes so I've not really had to contend with null -> low border systems or systems bordering alliance territories. Maybe that's where highly strung, bored alliance toons hang out.

Mostly I've found null to be quite empty but there's an awful lot of it so I might have been lucky so far.

Only a matter of time until a stealth bomber gets you. But enjoy the tears before it does.

I just undocked for the first time and someone challenged me to a duel. Wat do?

I'm confused.

Wouldn't a MWD get you out of bubbles faster than a AB? Why would you pick an AB over a MWD for fast travel?

Aye, got cocky this morning and paid for it Big smile

Jumped into null and within 30 minutes had 25 mil of loot in my little Magnate. I even blew up half the harder cans like a klutz, so it should have been a tastier haul.

But then I decided to take the same route back to get to an escape wormhole rather than pressing on to find a new one. The laziness resulted in jumping straight into a big bubble some kind Russians had set for me in my absence Cry

Mind you, I congratulated them briefly before they podded me. It was impressive how fast they got that disruptor there. And knowing I can find 25 mil in half an hour is certainly heartening. Just a shame I lost a beautiful T2 blueprint! P

Possibly. This is where my years of no EVE probably shows. IIRC Warp Bubbles used to disable MWDs. Or at least I assumed they did, since ship-scrams disable MWDs.

If they don't, though, MWDs are my next priority Cool

The other day I got stuck in a dead end system with a bunch guys in local trying to find me. It was late so I cloaked up, stayed logged in and went to bed. Felt a bit bad about it (felt a bit cheaty) but I've got to say it amused me to wonder how much time they wasted trying to wait me out. At some point in the night they made a request to fleet up...

So my null exploration has continued and today's been a rather crappy haul. Ironically, I made much more doing low-sec sites this morning than the null ones.

I think the blame has to lie with Drone Regions. This was the first 0.0 one I've explored, and it seems universally terrible.

Not only are all the cans I've found max level to hack, but they're also full of absolutely junky loot. I broke into a "level 4" can and got 1 mil of weird loot that doesn't seem to even have an industrial purpose.

Add to that the fact that rogue drones spawn on top of you if you fail a hack even once, and you have perhaps the mother of all crappy exploration sites IMO Shocked

And to get this 1 mil of loot I've evaded ~7 warp bubbles and had a run in with two separate Interdictor pilots (who fortunately weren't on their A game). Crazy.
