Anti-frigate ship?

Author

What's a good ship to eat frigates and similarly-sized hulls (AFs, destroyers, maybe interceptors) alive? I know the Caracal is good for that, but I don't really have any missile skills. So while I'm training up missiles, what's another good ship for that?

Any help would be appreciated.

Destroyers, any of them pretty much, coercer is not really an option due to only 1 med slot, but the thrasher is really great.

Or any ship with a med/large neut will give frigs something to think about.

Almost anything cruiser-sized or bigger can be fitted into antifrig trap. Like triplweb celestis with small guns, etc.
The only problem is that the only tactics available is more or less passive baiting.

Any destroyer bar the Coercer, and like Nares said pretty much any cruiser can do the job if fitted right.

425mm autocannons with a single te. But for missiles? How about a caracal with assault missiles.

The coercer is viable, because people usually engage thinking "hoho no mid" then forget to warp away when they aren't pointed and die. True story, had it happen a few times.

So destroyers are good against frigates now? Since they removed the rof penalty?
What about a ship that can take on frigates and destroyers? Would an arty thrasher work?

AML caracal
upping the ante, AML navy caracal (that has frigate-like agility btw).

Best anti frigate ship solo is one that frig pilots view as easy kill or not really threatening. So I would recommend Coercer since everyone in this thread thinks it sucks. Fit for max dps and range, overheat guns and disruptor and hope the frig pilot overextended himself. Caracal should work also if you're more missile focused.

In gangs try any long range fit destroyer.

Destroyers were always good against frigates. Arty thrash can work if you armor tank it with a web but really fast frigs will cause issues short range.

confirming ashimmu eats frigates.

basically all responses are good answers. and if you're in a fleet the coercer is a great anti-frigate gun platform. just have a buddy with a point or web or bubble, etc. and one that hasn't been mentioned that my buddy flys all the time, the Huginn. web bonus snags frigates.

Lemme stick my neck out and think outside the box a little. Battleships with "small" weaponry. It sounds silly and dumb, and it is, but stick with me a little....

When you jump a plain regular everyday normal BS into a frigate gang. One or more of this will happen:
1) They will get under your guns and kill you slowly but surely,
2) They will show concerns for smartbombs and hang out outside of 6km,
3) You are an obvious bait and they burn away.

You are in a Battleship. You can outlast any frigates even without bonus to small weaponry of any kind or any tank at all. It's easy to fit some buffer tank and be ewar heavy. Tackling gear up the wazzoo 'cause you are going to get scrammed anyhow so screw prop mods. Max tracking computers and webs and points and TP and all that good stuff.

You just won't need any "bonus", really. Beat them at their game. They will want to be where it's best for them but in this case THAT is where you WANT them to be.

3x heavy neuts, scram, 2x webs and Medium Pulse IIs armageddon with hobbies out? It's got to worth a shot. (Just don't get killed 'cause that will look bad)

Right?

It knows what you think.

Osprey Navy Issue, since it might provoke a "lol osprey" thought from inexperienced frigate pilots.

You want a scorpion for that.

Neuts, guns, missiles, smartbomb up top
8 slots for tackle in mids, easy to put 3x web, 2x scramble 1x disrupter, x1 ECM Burst
Lowslots for luls.

Even a regular Osprey if fit for combat with proper grown up combat skills would be able to mop up any t1 frigate.

High:
3x medium AC
1x medium neut

Mid:
2x Web
1x Scrambler
1x AB

1x Heavy plate,
1x DCU
1x gyrostab maybe?

4x Hobgoblins T2

Frig comes in, luls at an easy miner kill and then gets a smackdown.

Mind you this would not work against anything bigger then a frigate. :3

I've often wondered if a short range fit idea like this would be fun to jump into lowsec gate camps on purpose...

Thanks for the replies, guys, some helpful ideas here for me for the future, but right now anything that's larger than a cruiser is off-limits for me. I am training for an AML Caracal, as I've said, but in the meantime I was looking for something to work till I get there. I think I'll try some of the destroyers.
How well do destroyers stand up against cruisers?
