The latest game reviewers place Eve Online 8th well behind leader World Of Warcraft and I am not surprised.

On Games Radar, Eve was described as a "spreadsheet in space", but while it compliments much of what is happening in Eve, I see the future is very much under threat, and CCP cannot be happy be rated in 8th place.

I see lots of new emerging games threatening Eve, with more stupendous graphics and gameplay to boot. As mentioned World Of Warcraft has a new expansion with better models across the board.

The makers of ELITE, are creating a 2015 version called Elite Dangerous which is definitely going to rival Eve.

All other new games have superior graphics to games before, and run at 2540 x 1440. Most will be 3D ready.

It appears to me CCP is standing still, hoping the loyalty of players will keep them playing Eve. They can forget that, especially when they are charging £15 a month which is among the highest subscription fees of any game.

I have heard that CCP DOES HAVE THE IMPROVED GRAPHICS READY, but because of their slow servers, they cannot go public with it as it will affect the gameplay too much.

They need to invest in better servers and bite the bullet. Introduce those new improved models as soon as possible.

They also need an overhaul of the explosions. In World Of Tanks, each tank has a few unique explosions when it is destroyed. I hate seeing a huge Battleship instantly disappearing replaced by a small explosion graphic. It should be seen to explode properly not the poor way it happens now.

I hope they see some of the sense I've tried to make here. I like that you can communicate with CCP; they DO listen to their supporters, unlike the larger franchises, and I like them being an independent Icelandic/Scandinavian company against mainly American opposition, so I will continue to back them for as long as I can.

I just hope they act soon before the subs numbers decline irreparably.

NOTE: I've just seen a preview of Eve Valkyrie designed for the Oculus VR headset which certainly is a set in the right direction and showing CCP is definitely pro-active!

Graphical prettiness really isn't the big deal here; the quality of the game has more to do with the actual gameplay than anything else. Shiny graphics are nice, but long-term retention of players is always a question of gameplay. Admittedly, development of art and gameplay are orthogonal concepts, and focus on the one shouldn't impact focus on the other, but of the two, the gameplay is always the bigger deal.

Regardless, though, art and rendering are always going to be client-side issues, not server-side. If the art was available to be rolled out, any delays would have less to do with their servers, and more to do with client-side performance... aka, how well it will actually run on your machine.

I heard Blizzard (makers of Warcraft) will have a scaleable version to suit the quality of your computer hardware so don't see the problem there.

Remember, computers and graphics cards have also massively improved since when Eve was created so CCP cannot be happy with graphics from yesteryear.

Though I do agree with you it is not only the game graphics that make a good game - Eve has the right balance, it ain't perfect but it keeps most of us hooked. "Shiny" new graphics can only make us enjoy the experience more for our £15 a month's-worth.

I have accounts in 5 spaceship MMO games besides EVE and new models and explosions in EVE won't make me enjoy its huge time sinks instead of quick and less costly action in other games.

P.S. For CCP it will take years to implement new functionality so you better prepare to see empty game.

i would get excited the moment someone announces a space sim which is not instanced.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

"Elite: Dangerous is an MMOG, but with the important addition, that you can choose if you want to meet other players or not and there is even a mode to play fully offline."

Taken from the Elite: Dangerous FAQ.

Sounds just like Eve online doesn't it? *Coughs End sarcasm here coughs*

Clearly you don't know how servers work. Graphics are controlled client side, servers are there to process all the commands/inputs/and generate results, when those results are generate, they send a command to the client to tell the client what to draw.

A new physics engine on the other hand, well I can see where that would affect the server.... How ever a new graphic's engine.... not so much.

World of tanks also doesn't have to deal with the possibility of 100 vs 100 vs 100 fights.

They also believe in hard facts as well, change doesn't come easy, and you must PROVE OR HAVE OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY FOR THEM TO INVEST IN CHANGE.

do you have proof that sub numbers are declining?

Wow, we're in the top ten? Eve does better then I thought it would.

But seriously though, the new games are too different to take away the crazies populating Eve, I think we're safe.

after years of dwarf fortress and roguelikes, I've some to the conclusion that graphics don't really matter, its only the casuals who think about them so hard.

I don't consider myself a casual (at least not in EVE terms), but Is still don't want to play ELITE (wireframes only). I want a feast for the eyes as well as awesome gameplay and mechanics.

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

Well significant numbers of EVE players will be Instabanned within the first hour on other games, so there will always be a core playerbase here we can play with.Lol
And they do add flavour.

Super hires Graphics are nice, but absolutely not the primary reason many would play the game or demand, after all when playing chess, does one focus on the fine sculpture of the pieces or the gameplay?

CCP need to expand their efforts to encourage all players to participate more fully, PVE , PVP and all who fit into the various levels of activity in between.

Then It would take a real challenge to overthrow it.

And this is the point. EvE not only allows you to be a complete and utter **** the game devs positively endorse such behavior. This is what's so special about EvE. The community love the free form of the game not the GFX and the devs love it whaen players do things like HULKAGGEDDON or BURN JITA. They especially liked it during the early Incursion build up when a player started a rumour of an incursion fleet with the Sansha himself actually there in low sec which proved to be a trap when a null sec entity dropped a massive fleet on the incursion fleet and pretty much destroyed the servers.

EvE is about what happens in the game. Space politics, backstabbing and general skullthuggery. Essentially, be a **** in the game. It's fun.

They need to stop the subscriber hemorrhaging, and to do that they're going to have to overhaul PvE and the new player experience.

I am currently away, traveling through time and will be returning last week.
