Tip for dscan

Instead of using the space view, switch to solar system map mode. SInce 9/10 times players are at some specific place on the map like planets, sites, belts etc. this allows you to quickly visualize all the possible locations and see which ones are outside your range.

To perform the scan, double click on your own location to center your view (say you are at the sun for example). Then zoom in as far as you can and rotate your view to line it up with a planet. You can them use the sun like the scope on a gun; line it up by placing it directly on top of the planet. This allows you to easily do 15 and 5 degree scans without getting dizzy from the tracking camera swiveling your view around in space. I also feel it gives you a better visualization of where things are in respect to each other.

I use this method the vast majority of the time when hunting other players. It's especially effective for FW sites because they show up as beacons on the map. It's also great for locating POS in hostile systems. Start at the sun, and scan each planet for a forcefield. Once you find the planet, warp to it and use it to line up with the moons for a second round of scans.

With practice, how long does it typically take you to pinpoint a location, assuming the solar system isn't an absurd 120 au across? A lot of the time I end up losing the target before pinpointing them. I haven't D-Scanned using the above method much, but would like to try since it seems to be more precise than just clicking the overview and knowing the guy is lost in a blob of 10 different objects, as it is when using the space view and tracking camera. Also, do you have any typical overview settings you use when hunting players? Apart from ships and planets for instance.

Grrr.

I'm usually pretty quick about it ... a couple of minutes (including warping around).

Usually though, if I'm d-scan hunting, I don't bother with changing the angles, because I know where my quarry will be -- Planet P, Asteroid Belt #... Blink

Now, if it's someone running away ... that's a lot more hit and miss, because we're both trying to find the other guy, and not be found out ourselves ...

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

+100. Also, it helps to have your tactical overlay on when in the map view using dscan. 90 degrees is represented by the intersection of the axes, it provides a fixed point of reference, and it makes the 'gun' method mentioned above even easier to visualize, as the overlay basically creates a bullseye showing what you're pointing at. Give it a try, you'll see what I mean.

Generally pretty fast, but depends on what you are doing. If hunting FW space, it takes 15-20 seconds to scan all of the sites and determine who is there to play (assuming the sites are in range, otherwise some warping is required). If I'm looking for a POS it could be about 1-2 minutes, depending how many moons there are (but you at least know it's not moving!) As Velicitia mentioned, the fastest way to find someone is to already have a good idea where they may be.

As far as overview settings, things I want on my primary PvP dscan tab:
-Ships
-Stations/Gates
-Warp Disruption Bubbles (need to know about these BEFORE you warp there)
-Mobile Scan Inhibitors (something is hiding there)
-Forcefield (active POS, beware)

It's also useful to have a second tab with things you may want to scan from afar but don't want cluttering your PVP overview:
-Wrecks/Cargo Containers
-Drones
-Other Deployables

I also maintain two overview profiles used to quickly locate POS with dscan (something you do every day in WH space). The first is also used for pod saving.

First:
-Planets / Forcefields / (ships optional)

Second
-Moons / Forcefields / (ships optional)

With these I can scan the planets, warp to applicable planet, and scan the moons.

How do you set up overview tabs? I have a guide for that.

Alternative method.

Make an overview tab containing only ships.

Make a second overview tab containing planets, belts, sun, custom offices + faction warfare stuff (ihub, complexes), stations, gates + any other thing you can warp to

1. Determine range within 0.5 AU with 360* scan (ships tab). For example: target is between 10.5 and 11.0 AU

2. Switch to celestials tab, notice which celestials are in range (10.5 to 11.00). Say, 1 planet, 1 CO, 3 belts, 1 stargate

3. Turn on tracking camera and select the first possible celestial

4. Switch to ship tab, Dscan 11.0 AU, 0 degrees

5. Got him? Yes --> warp, No --> Switch to celestials tab, select next possible celestial, go to 4

6. Target on grid? Yes --> blap, No --> Go to 1 (he should be very close at this point: either in a safespot or in a celestial right next to the one you just warped to)
