where do fleet names come from?

Hello Eve-O

yes, another newb question on Eve-O that has probably been asked many times before.

I was wondering how the fleet doctrine names are derived? I across them when reading other Eve sites and blogs. For example: "slowcat", "foxcat", "baltec" etc. I know the slowcat fleet is Amarr Carriers but how did we come up with that name? Just curious any input would be awesome.

If it has "cat" in it, it's something PL pulled out of their asses.
From my understanding, Baltec fleet was named after baltec1 of Bat Country, who used to fly his Megathron in every fleet, even foregoing SRP when needed.

Basically, people pull names out of their asses. It's no different than station naming.

Except in the case of Baltec fleet, we have a thread where potential fleet names are posted by people & the mods roll a 1d20 to see what the new fleet will be called.

Fleet doctrine names need to be stepped up.

All of my Highsec Crusade fleets have muffin names.

Chocolate Muffin - AC Shield Coercers
Poppyseed Mufin - Hull Tanked Beam Laser Thoraxs
Lemon Blueberry Muffin - Pulse Laser Armor Brawling Blackbirds
Apple Crumble Muffin - Shield Blaster Apocs
Mini Muffins - Triple Hull Rep Arty Celestis
Bran Muffin - Drone Armor Rohks

Some, like Alphafleet (It was Maelstrom Battleships with artillery, did a lot of alpha damage) or snipehac (AHAC ships fitted for long range and quick get-aways) are perfectly straight forward named. Artybaddons are, as one might guess, Abaddons with artillery fits. Those aren't rocket science.
The CFC FYF ("A rude synonym for sexual intercourse in 4 letters* you fleet", their electronic warfare concept) is named for what it essentially states through action.

Generally, people make up names as they fancy. Some uses themes, like PL and their felines, but many just names it for what it is - "Proteus fleet"; "Moa fleet"; "Prophecy fleet" etc.

*I really hate the autocensor on forums. Doesn't work, and the consequences are euphemisms like this one.
