So hunting players with Dscan

i understand the 360o and the AU distance.. like search at 10au.. still in scan.. search at 5.. not in scan.. he's between 5 - 10au away

But then getting down to 90o or 60o
as the world is 3D... when i scan 90o in front of me.. how high above or below me does this scan?.. does it scan 90o out in front of me from the top of the system to the bottom?

so something like

........................... (venture)

(me) ----------------------

Can i miss him because he's to high up and then have to adjust my camera up or down to find them in the height of that area?

You scan in the direction your camera is facing. Its a 90 degree cone in all direction. So yes, he can be too high.

Edit: so its 45 degrees up and down (and left and right) from the center of your camera angle.

right so when it's 360 its doing a massive circle which is why i can see someone at 180 but then at 90 moving left and right i don't see him.... this is making sense now

Not circle. Sphere :)

Not a circle, a sphere. At 180, it half a sphere. As you lower the angle, it becomes, as Yarda says, a cone shape.

Added tip I only found out after a lot of d-scanning headaches, activate the tracking camera. When you click on an object on your overview, it will point your camera exactly onto the target, that way you can do precise 5 degree scans quickly. Next to the autopilot button, you'll see this:

[+]

Hit that button and a radial menu pops up, you want to chose the option on the left. You can turn it off easily by chosing the upper option.

Hope that helps.

Grrr.

Tracking camera on/off is by default 'c' key, little faster than clicking menus :)

Oh, and be sure that [ ] marker that shows up when you enable tracking camera is exactly at your ship because that's your "aiming" thingy. If it's not you can move it with your mouse and place on your ship when it shows up while camera is aligning with whatever you clicked.

It works exactly the way mentioned above but I'll add you can also do it from the system map aswell, and if you have the tactical view on while in that screen you get concentric rings around your position ranging from 1- 20ish au(which is rather helpful when trying to grasp how the dscan works)

If only they could draw scan cone when in system map view...

There's a long standing thread in F&I that I can't seem to find atm but ither someone will necro it or the idea will be suggested and it will get jealous and present it's self (yes in this particular instance I am referring to a thread as a person, I'm very hungover).

Tip for dscan

Instead of using the space view, switch to solar system map mode. SInce 9/10 times players are at some specific place on the map like planets, sites, belts etc. this allows you to quickly visualize all the possible locations and see which ones are outside your range.

To perform the scan, double click on your own location to center your view (say you are at the sun for example). Then zoom in as far as you can and rotate your view to line it up with a planet. You can them use the sun like the scope on a gun; line it up by placing it directly on top of the planet. This allows you to easily do 15 and 5 degree scans without getting dizzy from the tracking camera swiveling your view around in space. I also feel it gives you a better visualization of where things are in respect to each other.

I use this method the vast majority of the time when hunting other players. It's especially effective for FW sites because they show up as beacons on the map. It's also great for locating POS in hostile systems. Start at the sun, and scan each planet for a forcefield. Once you find the planet, warp to it and use it to line up with the moons for a second round of scans.

press f11
look in bottom right corner
observe the green sphere / half sphere / cone

drag the space in front of your ship to change camera orientation

look again at the green cone

(that green cone is the direction of dscan)

while yes this is true, it only works in one axis and is sometimes buggyEvil.
