Some feedback from beta testers:

Ive been playing ED For awhile now. And it is sincerely the best damn game ive ever played.... and its not even close to complete.
Ive been an Eve Online player since 2006, Since ive gotten into the Beta for this i have logged into eve twice.... i have a feeling Eve Is Doomed... This game is the second coming.... i kid you not."

I've played EVE from when it was in Beta. I sold my main character about a month after I bought ED premium beta; I know there is no way I'm going back. Fair enough I got into Eve because it was like the new and MMO Elite I'd been craving for... But now I can get the game I really wanted in the first place!"

In my opinion current biggest problem in Eve is lack of new content added to game for like last 3 years or so...
Of course DX11 and game mechanic changes are all nice, but its not the thing what will make me stay for much long, especially with new fresh and very good competitor on market.

I've been playing Eve since Apocrypha and I see that Eve is slowly going downhill all the time since then.
Back then we had online around 60-70k ppl on server at given timezone all the time, now it's not going higher than 35k ppl online.
Most of us run 2+ accounts, some even more than 10+ at same time so I'm guessing that real ammount of people playing Eve is not more than 10-12k people.
Elite has now over 25k ppl playing beta ( you can't multibox there ) - it speaks for itself.

The only competition EVE has is itself.

You do have a point about content, but CCP unveiled capsuleer controlled stargates this year, so I expect they're going to open up new territories somewhere. They could also open up another WH galaxy easily.

Interesting how no one mentions that you have to PAY £100 to "participate" in the Beta

I wanted it to be good, but considering Braben's post original Elite track record, and the fact that his biggest hit since was Kinectimals, Im not about to mortgage my house for a beta of a game when crashing into asteroids is a regular occurrance, thanks.

They're not even the same kind of game. EVE is basically a rougelike mashed with a social simulator. Not a great deal of similarities with Elite save for a sci fi setting.

Eve Online is in a state of permanent near-death. By the time Elite: Dangerous will have lived out its happy, prosperous life and died like any other good game would, Eve will still be kickin' it in the same sick ward it's been in since 2003.

Eve Online: Always dying, never dead.

Yes, EVE is doomed, just like when StarCraft II was released, and for the exact same reasons.

I actually agree that EVE seems to be on decline, based on my personal multi-region market data.
I can't rule out that it could be other factors though such as ice changes that changed the purchase patterns.

But I can certainly tell that a few regions that used to be very busy a few years ago are probably 5-10x less busy now in terms of actual player presence.

There was thread a while ago that analyzed when the "EVE is dying" crap began. Dude even made a cool graph with help from someone who kept records of these kinds of posts.

Based on that I can tell you the following: You are 10 years behind.
Hey, thanks! Cool graph is in my sig, I'll update it with July figures next week if Chribba has time to pull the data for me.

I think that EVE's health is less reliant on new content than other MMOs, since the players themselves have so much impact in creating the content.

It's only natural for people to get bored, or have less time to play, after years and years of playing. So I hope CCP manages to maintain a steady flow of new players (like me Lol).

Omgosh - noobs the lot of you.

Elite has a ranking for players that goes something like : harmless, wanted, dangerous

The name sort of says "you'll play for a while" because you would have to I order to get that assignation

Is elite even multiplayer? It's remembered for its universe being vast but fitting in 8k because it's generated off of a seed. Change the seed and you get an entirely new world.

You find this sort of thing in minecraft.

Eve is completely the opposite. It's finite and we all have the same universe and experience the gates and planets in exactly the same order every day with the exception of wormholes that give us some randomness in where you connect.

EVe PDU number is in decline mostly because bottling is being detected a whole lot more intelligently

Fact it's summer and right now, many FCs will be on duality (with 20+ players for teams) testing out setups daily.

Remove FCs from TQ and thei hardcore pvpers and you will see not a lot going on

All of this lacks any mystery with the exception of the dooms bringers. Sure game could be healthier but it's not looking to "cash out" by gaining millions of temporary accounts. It's designed for the long haul and many of the power blocks you see today will be dead and replaced by new ones tomorrow. We have been through this many times although seems players want to bore us a bit with lack of new power blocks recently.

So it's not dying, it's just not growing out of control and players aren't as brave as they use to be. Content to do nothing and be nothing. Different problem.

Guys its Summer. People are outside, you know, enjoying the Sun and going to the beach and vacations and festivals and parties.

EVE always has better numbers when the weather is crap and it is dark by 5pm.

ED and SC are interesting games but CCP have taken note and are making Valkyrie.

Horses for courses.

Do not panic we will still be here long after other pretenders have come and gone.

I have tin foil hat trained to 5.

i haven't played the beta that much because i don't want to spoil the release but it's quite a different experience to eve. much more immersive but far less detailed. it is the game that i started playing eve looking for but it isn't the game i found in eve.

So in 2009 there were 60-70k people online at all times?

If only there was some way that the number of users online could be viewed.

Oh, wait

Not only doomed, but cursed as well.

I have a voodoo doll here, near my desktop, I wrote EVE on her face and I abuse her over and over...

"-Die!!!!! In the eye now... die!!!! Lemme check (logging)... Yeahhhhhhhhhh, it's dying! Muahahahahahahahahahahaha..."

Game over, move on. Can I have your stuff? Please?

I was kind off with you until this point.

There is nothing worse when people make massive overstatements to try and prove the point they are making. All it does is make you look you have no idea.

Apocrypha was released in 2009. The PCU record for 2009 was just over 45,000.. that is along way from your 60-70k pcu at any given time zone.

I mean Eve has only hit over 60k on a handful of occasions and this was due to massive advertising / player driven events / fanfest etc to break the PCU record.

Eve has never and will most likely never reach 70k.

Anybody noticed what a stupid name this is; Elite Dangerous.

You're probably not old enough to remember the original. There was a progression of your character's title. The last three were Dangerous, Deadly, Elite. I think you had to kill 1,000,000 NPCs or something stupid to get the Elite title. I only got as far as Deadly.

Anyway, that explains the name, then... Roll

I've playing eve for 8 years now, and I'm in E:D's alpha since last year December.

And while yes, especially lately it has occupied a chunk of time that I'd usually have used for playing EVE, I don't think EVE is doomed.

First of all they are two very different games, both of them with their advantages and disadvantages. EVE is a strategical / tactical game, E:D is an action game. So one can not replace the other.

Also E:D is not going for a full "one universe" approach (there is an opt out incl. way back in through grouping and solo for people who don't want to play with others), so it won't create what I personally love about EVE most. A consistent and evolving universe where you are a part of what happens.
