Eve deliberately excludes the stupid and weak willied,
I'm surprised it's that high on the list.

And we wouldn't want it any other way.

Because the Legacy Code has too much Psssssssssssssssh, nothing will ever get fixed until CCP stop wasting money on failed sparkle MMOs and instead rewrite the entire backend of EvE from scratch.

McDonald's earns more total revenue than my local burger place. Obviously it must have superior products... right? Oh wait... it doesn't.

Well... my local burger place should just copy what McDonald's is doing and they should succeed just as well... right? Oh wait... then there would be no difference between the two and people would automatically gravitate towards the more ubiquitous and well known option (see: McDonald's).

Being more popular or having more subscriptions is not the only measurement of success... and certainly not a good metric of quality.

edit: also... based on the tone of the article... posting in a not-so-stealthy "Free-to-Play-with-Microtransactions-are-the-future" thread.

Several of those listed are free to plays.

The title of this thread is a little misleading. It says "Top Subscription MMO in 2013" but the content is talking about MMOs with the highest revenue, and the report itself doesn't suggest the game with the most revenue is the better game. Revenue is not indicative of quality. Take Justin Bieber, for example.

I am confident enough in my choice of games that I don't need to jump in and angrily justify my choice. Why do you feel attacked because it might not have as much revenue as another game and someone posts a link to it? Just play the damn game and stop pretending nothing else compares, because that would be totally wrong.

You people need to ease up and stop chugging Red Bull for breakfast.

Seriously.

I noticed that as well but I've played titles on that list and while they are freemium they do have subscription models. I've never played free LotRO. If I'm not subscribed I log in every 3 weeks and pay housing maintenance and log out. Same for Tera. I either sub or don't play.

Both of those titles also trend the direction I expect EVE to go if they ever start playing with their sub model. When they came out they had life time offers that were in the $350 US range and if CCP ever saw a need for a fast injection of cash, I expect them to go that direction.

I wasn't talking about the model of payment, I was talking about the distinction between quality and value. While some may actually believe the saying, "you get what you pay for", this really only applies to the really cheap stuff that you get from those $2 shops. This thread claims this is a list of the top subscription MMOs on the market, placing EVE in 6th place. I don't care what place EVE comes, but revenue and payment model is only one data set for determining game quality in a competitive nature. There are data sets that are vital, and yet missing, if one wishes to determine which game is actually the best. This would be a difficult task, however, given that a lot of that data will be based on subjectivity.

By its very nature, EVE will never have a massive subscriber base, since those that survive it are only meant to be a select few. If it is in sixth place, objectively speaking, then it is doing incredibly well. Add to that how long it has been around, longer than WoW, and how in that time it has thrived, and we have a very healthy game on our hands.

I'm pretty sure that's where the OP was going too. I was surprised to see Tera doing that well, the same for LotRO. I liked both for what they were but I didn't think they were doing that well. I kind of always knew EVE was punching way above her weight.
