Minmitar ships

Are Minmitar weapon systems (projectile turrets) a dead end? The range and damage are lacking it seems... My Fleet Issue Hurricane was using Artillery Cannons for longer range and I was doing the same damage with it as I was with my brand new Maelstrom which was using Auto Cannons.

Now, the part that confused me was that I have:

Gunnery 5

Medium Projectile Turret 5
Medium Artillery Specialization 3

and only

Large Projectile Turret 3

The short range was no problem when I flew my Thrasher

Small Projectile Turret 5
Small Artillery Specialization 4

but it doesn't help me when I'm flying a battleship. Before my battleship was destroyed, I spent my time in null chasing down battleships in Anomalies trying to close to 15km so that I could destroy them. It was tedious and very not fun.

Should I abandon my turret skills and start training missiles or should I even bother with Minmitar ships anymore?

I think the issue you have run into is tracking... or lack of thereof.

The larger the turret size (both in-class and size-class), the less able it is to track targets at closer ranges. The same thinking applies to short range versus long range weapons. Short range weapons generally track better than long range.

Artillery cannons in particular have bad tracking at close range (sub 15km)... especially targets smaller than a battleship.

edit: what you can do it change up your tactics a bit. Engage at long range. And do not worry about "not being in optimal"... projectile weapons are designed to generally operate in "falloff range" (check the stats of your weapons).

Also... feel free to post your fit here and maybe we can improve upon it.

Sounds to me you just need to train up skills. Definitely take the Specialization skills at least to level 4. There's also a lot of Gunnery support skills that will help :

Long Range Targeting

Motion Prediction

Rapid Firing

Sharpshooter

Surgical Strike

Trajectory Analysis

Course there's also various Damage types for Projectiles. Always a good idea to research which damage type to use against the NPC's before engaging.

There's only 2 types of T2 Projectile munitions available. I usually use those and carry some Faction munitions for specific damage type when needed.

Ah, I remember feeling like that, they are Farr from a dead end, you would seem to be missing the support skills (the ones linked above).

Those skills, once trained will effect the performance of all turrets I.e. projectiles, hybrids and LAZORZ in all sizes,
most ships in eve will benefit from thies skills.

If you look at your ammo and guns, the damage per shot from ammo goes up with a bigger charge but your tracking goes down on the gun itself. This means that you will do more damage to large targets but less damage to smaller (unless they sit still).

You're also comparing artilleryu to autocannons, try fitting 1400mm artilleries to the battleship and see what happens to your range. Medium autocannons would have bad range even on a hurricane, that's why you've fit artilleries. If you need extra range from a ship, look for ones with a fall-off bonuis (in this case, Machariel with 10% per gallente battleship).

I love how you compare 2 totally different setups.

Comparing a battleship with AC vs a BC with arty is like comparing an apple and a tomato.

Yes, both are fruit, but that's where it ends.

Thanks for the replies. I've already put in sooo much work. I'm glad to read that it's not a dead end.

As for the mentioned skills...

Long Range Targeting 4

Motion Prediction 4

Rapid Firing 4

Sharpshooter 4

Surgical Strike 3

Trajectory Analysis 3

I'm getting there....

Whenever I ask in game (and sometimes on the forums) about what to do about my ships, I often get linked to a caldari state ship. Minmitar isn't a very popular race it seems.

I'll post my ship fits in a bit.

also if u see good fit on the forum you can copy + paste it into the EFT software directly.
Also you can connect your API inside EFT and then you get the correct numbers for your character... very handy tool .

That is simple, because most mission runners are lazy as **** and thus prefer missiles so they can hit F1 and do something else till they have to hit F1 again for the next target.

I recently switched from cruise missiles to guns.

Missiles are indeed laziest form of gameplay.. not much thinking in there where with guns bit thinking and actually playing the game will yield better results.

And I can 1 shot frigs at 80 km so I approve.

My Vargur is my favorite level 4 mission ship. Definitely not a dead-end.

Keep in mind that I was born Caldari, yet I can pilot any ship in EVE (except titans and some transports) equally well, and I chose a projectile ship.

There was an old saying:

"Welcome to Eve, Please chose your difficulty:
Easy
Medium
Hard
Minmatar"

Despite a few years of "winmatar" (e.g. a few key Hulls that have now been nerfed) and people forgot that Minmatar are the most skill intensive race in the game.

Other than turret skills, drones skills are a big deal too - so you will struggle at first until you have a lot of skillpoints. But Minmatar are versatile, so you'll never be bored.

both are red too (well, for some varieties of apple).

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia
