Photo essay: Sex and drugs in an HIV-infected paradise

Quote:
Malindi, Kenya: A vacation destination with something for everyone. Sitting on the crystal coast of east Africa, the resort town offers glass-bottomed boat cruises, authentic Italian pasta, sex-for-hire and dirt-cheap heroin.

When the sun’s hot and vacation packages from Europe to Kenya run cheap, Italian tourists pour into town. Both women and men come for “sex holidays,” seeking out local “beach boys” for a night or an entire weekend’s worth of activity.

But during the low season — the four months of the year when rain is more frequent and the hotels empty out — things turn darker here. When the crowds die down, it’s hard to ignore that this is a town struggling with drugs and disease.

Are they serious? People actually vacation/holiday at such places?

May as well vacation in warzone Afghanistan...you are risking your life just the same.

What I got from this article is how stupid people are. And needle programs just delay the inevitable....if AIDs doesn't kill you, a drug overdose eventually will.

Either way, sounds more like a vacation in hell. Hard to believe people pay for this.

The difference is that deaths by guns and/or bombs make the news. Deaths by AIDS and drugs do not so there are people who simply don't see the risk.

Use condoms, and do not share needles.

Problem solved.

This is the same situation the world over. You could be describing San Francisco or any other major city.

As an aside most overdoses from heroin usage usually come from a new user that is being injected by old an user with the old users dosage levels (probable example of this is the current case with the escort and the Google executive), or a recovered user that falls back in to usage and at the same time doses at the same level as they were using before they tried to sober up.

EDIT: Rarely do current addicts get heroin that is stronger than their money paid for nor do they typically have the cash flow to get enough at one time to dose themselves out....

P.S. COMMENT DISCLAIMER: There are always exceptions though...

If drug incarceration and death by usage was actually covered by the media 'the people' might actually realize it is the longest, most expensive failed War ever initiated by man kind.

yeah I know what you mean. I was in tunis last year(just a little over a year after the revolution there I think) and got to spend some days in a resort about 50km from the libyan border. I was there for work mind you, but there were still a lot of tourists there.. From the companys safety guy we were told theye didnt reccomend we'd leave the hotel/resort grounds. We also had an american with us who got flat out forbidden to leave the hotel. yet the place was still 75% booked even though it was outside the holiday season. the roadsigns wher pointing the way to tripolli!
