Heavies and Sentries for a Carrier?

Hi,

one of my characters is going into an Archon.
This carrier will mostly be used for personal logistics, fighter support, repping a pos or something like that ****.
I want to know, because this will be my first cap, do I need tech 2 heavy and sentry drones?
I can't really think of a situation where the drones should be better than fighters and being a month earlier in the Int/Mem remap would be ******* great.

Sentries are nice to have T2.
They take half the time of heavies and you get all 4 types instead of one type.
So bite the bullet and train them.

I would get your fighters to l4 and work on carrier 5 tbh that extra drone is way cool.

Also archon tends to be a logistics carrier for armor and energy so make cap remote armor and energy transporters on your list.

I have used sentries a few times but mainly when we were lacking dreads for tower work. Don't use them that often.

In the end sentries are a pain in the arse of you get bumped away in a cap blob you often have to drop them.

So I would work on fighters then maybe med t2 combat drones then cap remote armor and energy then think about carrier 5 or keep chugging through t2 drones.

Oh and jump skills at 5 is pretty handy when u get round to it.

I've already got all the Drone Specs to 4, so the training time is the same.

I got all my rank 1 drone skills to 5 and all the others to 4, except for Drone Interfacing obviously.
All the other support skills are of course on my list. I'm just not really sure about the two drone skills and how much i would benefit from them.

Not sure about the carrier itself but you will love T2 sentries if you ever use them and T2 heavies are useful too, tho I seem to use them less often now I've trained T2 sentries.

I use T2 sentries all the time in PVE and a lot of the time in PvP too but this depends a lot on your personal situation.

For the carrier itself it sounds like you're not really going into battle with it so why bother with the drones at all?

I hate heavies, would hate training for T2 heavies too, IMO they are a complete waste of time when Fighters hit harder, fly faster and take more damage.

T2 sentries are grea!

For POS work the T2 sentries are some times great do to being shielded by the pos shield.

Even when you get bumbed there still in the shield protected and killing.

Heavys not so great when you can lauch Fighers instead. Though Med/Lights are worth it when you need them and will never notice when you dont.

Is it a rock point a lazer at it and profit. Is it a ship point a lazer at it and profit. I dont see any problems here.

I thought you couldn't deploy drones inside a POS shield...?

I'll echo the rest and say t2 sentries are definitely worth getting. You may use them on targets that the fighters don't hit so well, etc. They're also very versatile and will work well with ships like the geddon, or any of the gallente drone boats. Sentry drones are also about the only kind of drone outside of fighters that will do well in w-space.

T2 heavies can also be nice in some situations. 10-12 Ogre IIs is not something anyone wants flying at them, and they will work better vs smaller ships than the fighters will.

Assuming you can field 10 drones I'd say your loadout should look something like:

12 fighters
12 t2 sentries (I generally go with curators)
12 t2 ogres or beserkers
12 t2 hammerheads
12 t2 warriors
12 vespa ECM
12 wasp ECM
then shield and armor logi drones.

That kind of loadout will give you the most flexibility for engaging things, or running away (ecm) if you need to.

you can deploy flying ones outside the shield, then fly inside it and have them orbit. But I don't know how you'd get sentries in there...

That's a Templar, an Amarr fighter used by carriers.

This guy has obviously never tried to use Ogres against anything smaller than a BS. (Ogres have the same Sig Resolution as fighters but travel at 1/3 the speed as fighters and do 1/4 the dmg)

If you are in a carrier and trying to kill Cruisers and bellow you are doing it wrong. For everything else use fighters.

If you are in a carrier and DPSing a POS with shields....you are doing it wrong... A **** fit BS will out DPS a carrier with sentries.

I'm not saying don't carry other drones, but use the ship correctly or it's just a pretty loot pinata to people like me.

And don't carry just enough.....(12)

I always keep 50 Warr2s, 30 Ham2s, 14 Fighters, Lots and lots of Ewar drones of all sizes. If you get into a serious "fight" and your carrier doesn't insta-melt to the hostile fleet they will defang you. Smartbombs and people pew-pewing you drones will make them drop fast.

I don't fly carriers or use fighters so I could be wrong, but isn't tracking more important? Ogre IIs have much better tracking than fighters.

Sure ogre's track better but if you need ogres "tracking" to hit them it means the ogre's wont catch up to them. Fighters will hit "most" BCs just fine.

T2 sentries are very nice to have, if you ever use them. The only time I ever use sentries is for pos shooting...but that's what dreads are for. Don't worry too much about having T2 sentries. T1 work fine. T2 heavies are nice, but also not mandatory. You may as well use fighters.

I would prioritize T2 small > T2 med > fighters > T1 sentries > T1 heavies > T2 sentries > T2 heavy.

Get fighters 3-4 and T1 sentries and heavies before stepping foot in a carrier IMO. Even if it's just a logistics boat, you never know if you will be caught in a situation where you will need said drones to fight off attackers.

If you are using sentries on a carrier it means you are probably sitting still and going to die sooo fast because you won't warp in time to save your precious from the cyno'ing in reds.

I found sentries and heavies useful when fighters were taking damage, especially with smartbombs on the field. A carrier can hold a lot more spare sentries and heavies than spare fighters.

I found having a few archons handy for when the zerg attack, as Archons do bonus damage to biological. also archons can make a mean zergling stew.

Sure, the POS guns, etc outside the shield. The shield itself... not so much...

For PvP, I would have t2 sentries, simply because you can drop them and shoot people without worrying as much about smartbombs, etc. As for a stationary carrier being a target for reds hotdropping you... its a carrier, once you're pointed, there is no difference between being aligned and not being aligned - either way you aren't going anywhere. Sure, if its just a single tackler, and you can kill it fast, thats one thing. But if its a small gang that just dropped in on you, unless you have support on its way you're screwed anyways.

Now if you are looking at PvE uses (like in a WH... where you don't have to worry about getting hotdropped, only blobbed), I would recommend sentries for them not getting shot as much and being able to hit targets without having to worry about travel time. Heavies can also be useful for pasting cruisers that get under the sentries range. But most of the time you'll be using fighters (or you would be better off in a different ship).
