Lets be honest, they are more or less indistinguishable.

Lets be honest, they are more or less indistinguishable.

to the eyes of the hoi polloi, most probable. to the connoisseur, not quite.

good sarcasm however, is nigh on detectable.

So all this really is, is a sci-fi fix, for I have not cared for any series since Lexx went off the air in 2002.

Oddly, this is the truth for me too. I loved EVERYTHING that was science fictiony when I was a kid. Started playing Battletech when I was 12, loved Robotech/Macross even before that. Used to make my Transformers fight my Go-bots (Transformers always won because Go-Bots were lame), i even still have my very 1st Voltron action figure (Lions, not that vehicle knock off BS lol).

Sci-Fi TV show was on the air anywhere? Watched it. Sci-Fi movie, Ditto. Even went to a few 'Cons; when they would happen anywhere near me.

Now at 40 I still like Sci-fi, but I'm not a fanatic. Even after almost 30 years of being a Battletech fan, I didn't have much desire to play Mechwarrior Online.

I guess my tastes have changed, when I was a kid I liked entertainment that talked about the possibilities of the future, now as a middle aged dude, 'the future' (which includes DEATH, come on Microsoft,Screw XBoxes, hurry up with those 'download your brain here' Boxes!!!) isn't something I spend a lot of time thinking about lol. Well, that's not true, I do sometimes think "man, In the future I hope they make some kick ass nano-bot based ass itch cream, because reading EVE forums makes my ass itch sometimes (lol).

I've considered the idea that EVE satisfies my sci-fi tastes so much that i don't need anything else. It's all and Icelandic Conspiracy. Dinsdale was right!

Glad you're still with us m8!

Who needs all the scifi talk shows anyway when you can just log into EVE and start using futuristic weaponry right from the start?

Just a quick reply about the theme of your OP:

CCP needs to refocus on building its intellectual property. In the past, they were always very keen to keep everything "in fiction"...even most of the patch notes had flavor baked in. The gameworld was immersive, and compelling, even if you chose to just LOLGANK your way to happiness. You still felt like this was a rewarding gameworld to take part in.

Now, these days that seems to be gone. Everything is about the Meta...the out of game "game". Yes, there are certain groups that are irreverent to any sort of fiction building or IP strengthening story, but this harms the property immensely when CCP actually gets infected with that attitude. My hope, as a player since beta, that CCP can pivot and start re-building one of the great new sci-fi worlds I know it was intended to at the beginning.

But for that to happen, there needs to be a culture change. This much is apparent.

Why are incursions still part of the game story?

Why are there no official events anymore?

Why is the Alliance Tourney treated as an out of game happening? You do realize there is a planet named after the first tourney winner, don't you?

Why are there no more Chronicles, short stories, or other world strengthening fiction? Even if you point to new stuff, you cannot say it is featured by CCP anymore.

You risk bringing out the disgruntled live event junkie in me. Cool Oh I can rant for a week about that matter alone. But I'm waiting for that issue to reach a defining moment (or "come to a head" more likely).

Haha, on that note, I left after a few months of playing back in 2010 to lose my virginity (and because I felt that CCP management was being sketchy, but that was more of an excuse). Now that that's accomplished, I'm back.

On a more serious note though, I like a lot of the improvements they've made. Mining lasers actually look cool instead of that ugly yellow-orange, and the venture makes for a nice startup miner. I remember barely eeking out 500k an hour in my bantam/badger combo. Now I can readily make three times that with just the venture.

I'm also finding myself enjoying the avatar. I was seriously skeptical about walking in stations when they first proposed it, but I really like what they've done with the captain's quarters...and I can't argue with the eye candy. I also like that you no longer have to spend half an hour trying to line each individual probe up just right to get the overlaps to work.

Good stuff! I haven't tried PI again yet though. I imagine it is still the evil daily click fest it used to be when first introduced.
