Solo Mining: Orca & Mackinaw?

I've been searching the boards for an answer to this one, but no luck. So apologies if this has been previously discussed.

Can you store a Mackinaw in an Orca > Fly the Orca out to an asteroid belt > Undock the Mackinaw > Go mining > Bring ore back to Orca until full > Dock Mackinaw in Orca > Fly Orca back to station.

I'm not really interested in joining a corp just yet, so wondering if the above is even possible.

Yes, dumb n00b here. But not THAT dumb. :)

Absolutely ineffective.
Use for swag (and losing Orca to hijack) only.

Yes you can do that. It will work. Its also a really bad idea as while your sat in your mack another player can fly up and jump in your orca then fly it off. It happens a few times a years so don't say you werent warned.

So doable, but not advisable. Understood, and thank you.

Other than the possible hijack, is it just not cost effective to load an Orca solo vs. just flying back to the station, unloading the Mac, and heading back out?

The gain is way too small to counter the possibility of someone just snagging the orca.

I could just hide the keys in the Orca's glovebox. :)

You get orca primarily to have mining booster not because it has 120k m3 ore capable cargo space. Mack at exhumers 4 has what, 35k m3 of ore cargo? How often you will be able to fill it without having orca boosts, 1 - 2 times per hour? That's totally negligible loss of yield considering possible 700 - 800mil piece of junk parked beside you at belt and susceptible for gank/theft. Remember that huge amount of your tank consists of bonuses based on your skills and when you eject yourself from a ship all that is gone back to bare base values.

Can't you just lock up the Orca to prevent it being boarded? IIRC, that's how ghostriding Carriers work...

Yes, no one has ever stolen an orca from under a mackinaw's lock before. Please do this and mail me your character's name and location. I will come demonstrate how (im)possible it is to make a mackinaw unlock a target. I can do it with catalysts, with stabbers, with machariels, with griffins, or just wait for you to **** it up.

Locking the ship will prevent anyone other than the owner from boarding it.

However, someone can jam your mackinaw with an alt, making it lose lock, and steal it still.

Also, if you don't have a character inside the ship, it won't give you any fleet boosts. When you leave a ship, your skills no longer alter its attributes, its active mods turn off, and it becomes a theft waiting to happen.

Make one friend of a guy who can fly an Orca and uses it.

You don't have to join a corp. Just be proactive in making conections.

Buy mining alt or orca alt, it's much safer and cleaner that way.

Lady Areola Fappington:  Solo PVP isn't dead!  You just need to make sure you have your booster, remote rep, cyno, and emergency Falcon alts logged in and ready before you do any solo PVPing.

It is already going to take you something approaching an hour to fill your Machinaw - another hour to fill the Orca's fleet hangar (and I don't know whether you will have access to the ore hold or cargo when you're not in the ship but approaching another three hours to fill those if you do...)
On the other hand, risking considerably less, with just the Machinaw you have to spend a couple of minutes every hour docking up and unloading. It is advisable to take a break from the screen every hour anyway, perhaps get a cuppa, relieve the pressure...etc.

Consider the Orca can as saving you perhaps fifteen, twenty minutes every five hours; fifteen minutes at a cost of almost a billion ISK... is your mining earning you four billion an hour?

Even if you were to invest in a second account, you're far better off putting them in another Machinaw than going for the Orca - the Orca saves you a little time, the second Mach doubles your yield...

Thanks for all the info...I think I'll just stick with my Mac for now. I will eventually join a corp, but for now, I'll just be content with my little corner of mining ops.

If your system is empty enough to risk having your orca nicked then you could get a miamos and if your skills are high enough you can jet can then collect. I use to do this. You can drop 6 cans in two hours and your miamos should be able to pick it all up with two full loads.
