soooo... if everything is ok for 99.9% of players, and, besides you, there have been no reports of unusual or unstable connections around the globe from CCP or whoever, then it's not something between your pc and CCP's server?

maybe there is an issue on the connections around your area, or maybe TQ is telling you something.

Sorry, but it's a simple fact that there's virtually no way the issue is on CCP's end. Thousands of other players do not have this issue.

The likely sources are your home network, your ISP, and anywhere on the assorted backbones between your ISP and CCP.

My ISP had a similar issue and they were, as ISPs typically are, pretty incompetent about resolving it. Persistence, and a not-insignificant amount of troubleshooting their internal network (in as much as I could from user-land, but at least all of their routers were configured to respond to ICMP requests originating from inside their network) eventually got them to fix it.

Try using PingPlotter (or a similar tool) to figure out where the problem is and take it from there - it's guaranteed to be more effective than impotently raging at CCP, who almost certainly cannot do anything about it.

Oh my. Is the “I have x Mb on my connection, therefore there should be no problem” myth still alive? Lol
It's like the good old “I have a gigabit router, why is my ping 300ms?!” days all over again.

I have two gigabit routers, why is not my ping 150ms?!

Not to mention that 120Mbit is a really odd number for an ISP to be selling...

Sorry to hear about OP's closed sockets though, I've not had closed sockets for ages myself, but then there's difference in network and network from your ISP regardless of any speed they might claim to sell (I rather have a good 50Mbit link than a jumpy 100Mbit)

When your alt supports you, you should wait longer than 30 seconds to respond.

There's a 38 page thread on the closed socket error. Plenty of people with this error, I have it as well. I have tons of online games and other online services and EVE is the only one that disconnects. I'm pretty sure the fault lies with EVE then.
And don't give me the "it's not because everything else works that it's not your fault' -bullshit.

This is literally the weirdest reply I've seen for a while. Big smile

Anyway, socket closed is an intermittent issue for me personally - hardly get it anymore though, and I never cared much anyway as the gameplay is awesome and well worth occasional hiccups. *shrug*

Take care and enjoy whatever else you play.

Agreed. My rogue was blood elf, actually. Which is funny since my current avatar picture really looks like it could have been based on that xD

Aside from that, @OP:
No issues for me, either. I've nothing to do with Virgin Media, though.
But if others who have the same ISP don't have any issues either, it's likely the reason is closer to you than to CCP.

120Mb connection, not wireless, no issues with any other game online. I come back after three years away and get kicked out every 15 minutes just like the good old days. Not much changes around here I see.

By then.

No you still can't have my stuff.

Have you considered the fact that, if the problem is still around after 3 years, it might be on your own end? Or was 'I have a 120Mb connection and no problems in other games' as far as you got, troubleshooting wise?

Used to have the socket closed error constantly. After a bit of research, I found out my ISP was packet shaping (they all are). Seems EVE looked enough like a popular Peer To Peer protocol that it's packets got dumped in the "bulk" category.

EVE is pretty sensitive to late/dropped packets, and with my EVE data getting lowest priority on the network...well, socket closed. Couple of calls to the right people at the cable company, though, managed to get it fixed. Only socket errors I've seen now come from full-on network outages.

this is real problem really. Ive seen plenty of MMO's that can easily handle dropped packets and stay connected. If ccp would care anyway, they would review their netcode.

Yet EVE is the MMO I get the fewest dropped connections. Of course, someone who says they've never lost connection to any other MMO has either not played any other MMO for more than a few hours, or should buy a lotto ticket as they are the luckiest person around.
All MMO's drop connection, EVE is just honest about when it drops rather than pretending it's still working for 30 seconds while you die a horrible death thinking you are playing (most of the time)

in MMO's like wow, or guild wars I would play on crappy connections, with 500 ms latency, and I could raid, do 5mans, ect. If I did the same thing in eve I would simply get socket closed errors and couldnt play. thats really bad netcode.

Some years ago, 7 or 8, I had some problems connecting to EVE, it was before the server moved to London, if I'm not mistaken. I filled a ticket for customer support and they asked me to use Pingplotter and send them the saved connections graphics.

From that time until now I'm living with and loving Pingplotter and whenever I have a feeling of something awful going on I activate it to trace the IP and find the real culprit.

There are 3 versions of the program there: Pro, Standard and Freeware, the link to download the freeware version is somewhat hidden tho.

You have to be very careful in making sweeping judgements like that, when operating in an environment that's doing QoS shaping. Every ISP I know of shapes their network, so things like HTTP and such pop up superfast (hey look, proof you 1000MB* connection is THAT fast!!! *1000MB is not an actual speed rating. 1000MB is the name of the package you purchased. Actual speeds may vary.).

In that situation, sure, Program X will run scorching fast, while Program Y is lagging out, because program Y's data is getting choked to death.

EVEs netcode isn't THAT bad. I used to play EVE via sat internet over in Iraq. It worked, well enough. It just doesn't like when ISPs do funky things to it's data.

"plenty" is not a numerical stat. As far as I can even guess, you can make a 38-page thread with only 50,very vocal players. Not a hard thing to do.

Also, I wasn't pulling the "it's not because everything else works that it's not your fault" cardin a serious way either. At most, blame your ISP for traffic shaping, poor local connections, or some sort of local fuckups. EVE is, by itself and in design, quite sensible to packet loss, something that doesn't affect many other MMO's out there.

Pull up Ping Plotter, do some tracing with it and if you get regular packet loss between you and TQ, then it's neither your fault nor CCP's. And if your ISP can't solve it... well, you're boned.
