Should I be planning to use alts?

As mentioned there are two kinds of alts.

1) One of the three characters on a single account.

2) Characters on other accounts.

There are as many uses for alts as people can think of. What matters to you - is do you know of a use you have for one?

Keep in mind - that alts cost money and time. Fooling around with your alts is a division of YOUR time. You also have to fund them for ships and skill books. Thus, it is often easier to have a large amount of money - if it's only being consumed by one character. It all depends on what you are doing.

Some activities lend themselves better to multiple characters than others.

Mining works very well as do any number of other industrial uses.

PVP - you have to manage more than one character in a fight and if you don't know what you're doing - you stand to lose two ships instead of one.

One use for alts - is in keeping a space open. There are a number of space types in EVE where if everyone leaves them - they will close. Keeping an alt in the space while the other character leaves to change ships, etc. can make some things work that otherwise won't if you are playing by yourself.

My question is, with the ability one character to learn EVERYTHING, is having multiple characters on your account something people really do here?

I love the whole mining > refining > selling process; always love making things for other players, I could see myself getting into the exploration role as well. I don't really have much interest in combat, aside from keeping pirates at bay.

Thanks in advance!

Well, one character learning every skill is more theoretical than practical. IIRC it would take around 20 years to learn every skill to lvl 5.

The problem is, only character per account skills up at a time, unless you use PLEX to enable 2nd and 3rd character slots skilling up. Depending on your IRL financial situation and what you think you want to do with a 2nd character, you may or may not be better off having 2 accounts. A dedicated industry alt can suck up a year or more worth of training (especially if you get into researching tech 2 blue prints and manufacturing), while being inept at combat and exploration. Also unfortunately, it takes a bit of money to get started in manufacturing (blue print originals (BPOs) can get expensive).

There's a totally revamped industry expansion going live in a little over a month that may or may not be easier to get the hang of than the current system, so you'll have to learn a new system over if you start industry now lol. My suggestion would be to train up your core skills like CPU management, power grid management, spaceship command, and even drones skills since drones are useful for combat ships and miners alike. Also look at the stickied info threads here and the science and industry forums.

Good luck!

Everyone, thank you for the help! I must have found old information RE: races effecting attributes.

Nothing to do with race, never has as far as I know of.

OP: you are correct. A fair while back race/bloodline attributes had a marked effect on character development (e.g. Caldari/Achura was favoured for mining/industry).

Be very careful when researching EVE - there's a lot of outdated info out there. Even Evelopedia isn't infallible - always cross-check your facts.
