Is it OK to lie to children?

topics like Santa Claus, tooth fairy...etc.

I recall the lies and the subtle disappointment as I grew up that I was being lied to.

Maybe I'm weird, but I don't think it's right.

What do you think?

of corse its ok to lie to children, mine would never take me seriously as an adult, never mind as a parent if they knew a fraction of what i have done, regardless of context.

There are cases where the lies will benefit the children more than the truth. As you said, Santa and so on.

But then there are also cases where parents lie to their children because they don't have the guts to tell them that life isn't always sugar sweet. And that's why we got freakshows like X-factor where some teens gets absolutely humiliated because they have been told by their parents they are good which they obviously aren't.

It's ok to lie to them, but not ok to brainwash them. Unfortunately, society is OK with both.

Children should be left to be children for as long as possible
they are rammed through life at an ever accelerating rate, and they fast lose the chance to be a child

let them worry about the biggest lie they'll ever hear, after they've grown up

I remembering being a little irked when I found I'd been b.s.ed about Santee also. But I continued the tradition and b.s.ed my own kids, because:
-School, TV, etc. were going to do it anyway
-I didn't make a big serious lore thing out of it. I kind of did it with a wink and a smirk.
-I figured letting them go along with the customary fairy tale things wouldn't hurt them too much. I mean, if discovering Santee and the Tooth Fairy were fake really traumatized people, the customs would have died out, right? People would have quit doing them, because they were no fun.
-The alternative is to tell a little preschooler that what their teachers, friends, and friends parents are sayings is all a big lie. That's kind of a heavy burden for a little kid's psychology to have to deal with.

I will say I think the santa stories and such are part of a cultural meme to condition people to just accept the BS that comes later. They are little lies designed to prepare the brood for the big lies....

I'm going to have to go with the OP on this one only when it applys to mythical characters.

Being convinced that santa is real all the way till you are 15 years old because you trusted your parents to always do right by you and then being let down like that.... Scars people man TT_TT

That those are legends and/or mythologies, not necessarily a "lie". Otherwise every work of fiction and imagination is just a lie. Life would be bland if done away with such things, and difficult to express thought through narrative for various learning and nurturing purposes.

Yeah... because we shouldn't encourage imagination in children. We should just tell them that they will have a sad life of hardship and die a agonizing death one day. If a kid want's to believe in fairies and unicorns when they are little, as all kids do and want to, it's not my place to smash their little imaginations. Huge difference compared to a "lie", and to call it such just lessens what a lie is.
