Hey guys, i was reading up on some things and i heard about "named" rats who drop the purple loot. I think they are called officers. Where exactly can i find them and what security status?

Null sec. And they are extremely rare spawns usually found in belts.

You can find only find these NPCs in the asteroid belts and spacial complexes of deep 0.0 space.

Three words of caution:

1. This is the same area of space where players CAN shoot at you with impunity and WILL shoot at you with impunity if you do not give them reasons otherwise (and even then, they might still shoot you).

2. The rate at which these NPCs spawn is less than 1%. The odds of being engaged by another player is orders of magnitude higher. This is why they are so expensive.

3. Rarity and cost do not necessarily mean "the best." Sometimes there are other "special mods" that have equal, or better, stats than officer gear and are FAR cheaper.

Unless it's been changed:

Technically you can find named rats at least in .5 and lower. But the ones in high and low sec don't fly the battleships, instead flying cruisers or frigates respectively. ( based on a real foggy memory of getting some named light missile launcher in high sec one time when I was actually churning haulers for trit, I don't recommend it. I was young and more easily amused at the time :)

You can rat belts to try and get them to spawn, but honestly even in null it's pretty friggin monotonous and will make your head explode. You'd probably make more selling civilian rail guns on the market from infinite free rookie ships than belt ratting outside low or null. And low has even juicier targets in the belts these days.

Yeah lowsec belts have more rewarding spawns than nullsec at present.

The officer spawns (the ones that drop the 'purple' modules) are ultra-rare. If you live in nullsec, it may be worth checking your system's belts once every couple of hours to see if one of them has spawned, but doing so is like buying a lottery ticket. It almost always ends in disappointment.

Lowsec belts have Mordus elite spawns that drop blueprints for the new Mordu's Legion pirate ships, which are worth a lot. They also have the much more common Clone Soldiers, which will drop tags that CONCORD will accept as bribes to forgive past crimes. The Clone Soldiers that spawn in 0.1 and 0.2 are much more valuable (IIRC) than those in 0.3 and 0.4. (Mordu's rats are equal in all of lowsec, 0.4 to 0.1).

One other thing to mention is that officer spawns hit hard. I understand that the top ones (officer spawns come in ranks both in value of item but also in toughness to kill) can neut out a carrier in a few seconds which gives you some idea of what we're talking about in term of difficulty.

On the other hand there are weaker commander spawns, there are ships which while rare are much easier to kill and drop faction items which while less valuable will probably sell more quickly. They can be recognised by an extra name in their description.

Just to fix usuall misleading guidance from mr. Otichoda, check end of this side, so you know what you will be dealing with. There are talks about special tricks how to make officer spawns more likely to appear, but they are ... let say a legends.
