Discluding allternate characters, How many new players has EVE gained this past year. I'm curious since if CCP is now overhauling much of eve's oldest features will it help retain these new people.

Overhauling all the old features will help retaining all the old people that went on hiatus because nothing old was overhauled. In fact this neglect was one of the reasons for the summer of rage.

Was industry the oldest feature people wanted worked on first? or are starbases more prevalent?

Not really but since a lot of systems are interconnected the industry stuff was the best place to start. Theres a chart in the fanfest keynote presentation that shows the order they're updating the various systems in.

In the past both industry and POS/starbases have left a lot to be desired, especially with regards to the UI.

The industry UI upgrade looks pretty good, and I'm hoping that the deployable structures that we've recently seen are the first steps to making POS's and starbases more user friendly, at present they're arcane.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

And there have been a ton of changes this past year. The patch notes list all of them.

Since the Industry overhaul also included significant overhauls to POS's, both groups win. More work needs doing on POS's, but they certainly did gain a lot.

116 new pilots created in the last hour on tranquility.
Industry statistics, excluding the f2p model, turnover is roughly ~30%
Three character per account, so I would roughly guess that in the past hour, we have roughly 10 new player accounts created while some 10 vet accounts expired, if active accounts are holding at a stable level. This is during peak time, so working out statistics would need to match the hourly and daily averages which is something I totally don't want to do P
But for the past peak hour, probably 10.

I started playing the game in Feb this year, and now have 4 alts (4 accounts), 3 are in started corps still, 1 (main) in a large player based corp, living in null. Amusingly enough, this character (my oldest, but not my main) not only is a missioner, but also currently 'leveling his raven', as expressed elsewhere in the forums. I figure that this character is the one that I can play around with and make more mistakes on without blundering into anything.

My moving from another MMO to EVE wasn't a result of news about new features, the revamp of older systems or anything like that, it was more a combination of the downward spiral of the MMO that I was playing, and seeing the news and media of the epic large-scale fights (B-R5RB 1 & Asakai), coupled with what was advised as the challenging learning curve of the game.

Sadly, these sorts of epic battles would appear to be a thing of the past, given what I understand to be some sort of agreement between the major nullsec alliances, or at least, until someone either screws up a mechanic, or decides to fall out of their tree.

I read up on the game for about 2-3 months before I downloaded the trial - both here, community threads on other forums I participate in, and places like Reddit - perhaps that makes me slightly unusual, as I came in expecting a free-for-all pvp, and a challenging learning cliff.

I view the discussion about game mechanic revamps being tied to new players as a bit of a misdirection - they're new, so it is irrelevant to them whether industry, combat, marketing or whatever has changed, because it is all new to them (and will be so for some time, as they progress further into the game. Personally, from those I've interacted with, many more are attracted by either the challenging nature of the game, and/or the open nature of the player-created content, in particular the previously mentioned epic battles.

Yes, changes in mechanics do help - whilst I've not got an indy alt, the Crius changes I am finding interesting, as another facet of the game that I may wish to explore later on.

If we're talking about new player retention, then that is a much more difficult thing to quantify, as the reasons behind people leaving are many and varied. Some will leave by ragequitting when their new shiny gets blown up on undock - chances are that this game just wasn't for them. Some will leave owing to game mechanism irritations - I would hope that these would be addressed by developers in due course, whilst also providing new and updated systems to also retain the longer term players. Others owing to RL commitments, or an inability to fund/plex their accounts. Some will leave owing to boredom, because they've not developed a particular focus in the sandbox, and they're used to other MMO's chained missions / raids that are present - there's so many possible reasons for people to leave (both old and new) that the only real way that CCP could quantify this would be to undertake an exit survey to people's email addresses after a period of account inactivity.

You believe having to use gates is the reason more new people don't create accounts?

Without gatecamps, how will players get kills?

Shame on you.

No it's not that high/low or EVE would be increasing/decreasing. Some f2p's have very high turnover, but as you move towards games more based on the skill game rather than the cash game, you generally come of with 30% figures across the board. Turnover is generally one leaving while being replaced with a new subscriber, and usually measured in increments of ~90 days (avg minimum of short term subscribers). No game retains 99.9% (including alts which I figured in as well as trial accounts not retaining), or you would see dramatic subscription increases. Though that happens to an extent, it's often short tern and will eventually go into gradual decline (or evening out so to say), such as months after the release of a new and anticipated game which happens to retain players at the usual statistical standards. This has been true even since UO, has been pretty standard for over a decade.

Funny mistery: on May 25th, Humble Bundle offered EVE Online. 28,000+ packages were sold and 6,300 additional characters were created that day (8,800 versus an average of 2,500 per day).

Yet, the other 22,000 new accounts are nowhere to be seen yet, despite the Geckos... What?

Q: Should we be worried? A: Nope. (...) Worry a lot if Fozzie, Masterplan, Rise, Veritas, Bettik, Ytterbium, Scarpia, Arrow, or even Greyscale leaves. Worry a little if Punkturis, karkur, SoniClover, Affinity, Goliath, or Xhagen leaves.
