Escalations

Escalations seem to be based on a number of stargate jumps as opposed to light years. For example, I may get an escalation 5 jumps away using stargates but in certain areas I may have to take a carrier across 3 regions to get to that destination. Surely escalations should be based on lightyears rather than stargate jumps?

Nope. Escalations have always been based on stargate jumps, not lightyears. You want to get to the escalation by using your carrier? Deal with it. Others have been for years.

Now if you are new to carriers, guess what, I have seen it where one stargate jump = 2 jumps for a carrier or capital ship. Just because it is a short distance by stargate jumps, does not mean it will be within 1 jump for a carrier. I suggest you use the DOTLAN jump tool. See: http://evemaps.dotlan.net/jump

It's not stargate jumps. I've had an escalation be 5 jumps away in one direction one time and then gotten the same type of escalation from the same type anom in the same system be 20 jumps away in another direction.

CCP hasn't told us the exact details and never will.

In null i have noticed something but I can't prove it so take it for what it's worth. Back when i was living in Querious and the alliance I was in was hostile to the guys who owned Catch (Delve was blue to us so Catch was the only close hostile territory), I'd get most of my escalations take me to Catch. After my alliance temporarily blue'd the guys who owned Catch, I started getting escalations in Delve and the further part of Querious.

Based on that I believe that the escalation system tries to put you in 'danger' as much as possible which IMO would make sense in a game like EVE.

It has always been my understanding that escalations in null will spawn anywhere within that region.

This is exactly why they need to rework the Nestor with a nerfed jump drive.

I have triggered over 30 escalations in Vale of the Silent, of which all 30+ escalations have gone to Geminate. Multi-location escalations have never, ever jumped back to Vale of the Silent, they've stayed within Geminate.

Note that they sometimes land in SOCT (NPC) space, and sometimes in the various surrounding neutral or red systems. I have never seen a first step of an escalation less than 6 jumps or more than 9 jumps from where I am, which I would put down to there being ample selection of neutral and red systems of appropriate security within that range.

things I have not tried.

escalating with Kalevala Expanse in the optimal range (gurista escalation -> drone npc region)
escalating with standings blue systems in the optimal range. (ie does it care about blue donut or just alliance).
escalating with only light blue and deep blue systems in the optimal 6-9 range. (expecting to see 11 jump escalations to npc or red space if its there to be honest).

other things I've tried

escalating highsec islands that are too small to contain the escalation. they go as far as 11 jumps to other highsec.

If its attempted to optimise around light years, its highly likely to cause blowouts of gate-jumps, which since we all have to fly either our T3s or cynos too, will hit everyone and will still hit people doing FSPs in caps

If gates are the fairest way of doing it, that's fair enough, it just doesn't seem logical as most other things are based off light years. Yeah I used to do them in Period basis and I had them go into Delve, Querious and Paragon soul, so they are not restricted to regions.
