Retriever or Covetor for high sec mining?

Hi guys/gals,

So while waiting for the last 52 minutes of training to pass, I've been trying to decide between getting a Retriever or a Covetor for my mining. The thing is I'm not planning to go to lowsec or nullsec for quite a while longer. That said I was wondering which of the 2 mining barges would suit me better for mining in high sec.

I know a lot of people chose the Retriever, but the Covetor has a bigger yield and it seems to me like it has more than enough shields and armor to withstand high sec rats.

That said, is the Covetor worth getting instead of the Retriever if I'm only mining in high sec with it?

All opinions are welcomed. Thanks :)

If your solo mining the Retriever is the goto ship. It has the balance of what you need.
If you will be in a fleet most of the time with haulage available then the covetor is the better option.

If you have an alt to haul, get a covetor.

If not, get a retriever.

Solo mining is too inefficient in a covetor, you'd be warping back to station too often. I wouldn't recommend can mining either, unless you've really found a great system that no one ever goes to. People are just going to grief the crap out of you. And don't pay for mining permits. Go to a less populated system. You'll have to haul further, but you'd be surprised with the good mining systems you can find near trade hubs that the permit losers don't ever go to.

is mining permit a scam? how do they make sure no one will bother you meanwhile?

Procurer or Skiff. The rest of the bunch are terrible for hi sec.

Pretty much, I think its along the lines of part with isk or part with your ship and pod. Gankers without the skill or bravery to taken on ships that may actually threaten them.

Thanks for the answers guys, will go for the Retriever.

Why would the rest be terrible? I've survived rats as low as 0.6 with just my Venture and 2 hobgoblins, surely the Retriever can take it.

The problem isn't getting shot by rats.

The problem is getting shot by players.

It's mainly about protecting yourself against gankers in high sec, the belt rats are not the issue. The Retriever is good for solo mining, but lacks tank, as does the Covetor (which is even worse due to its small ore hold).
The Procurer has a medium sized ore hold (12k m³), but lots of med slots and a bonus to shield hitpoints, which makes it an excellent choice tank wise. You get enough EHP to make it an unattractive target for most gankers. And it's cheaper to replace than a Retriever.

If you're going solo, take a long look at that sexy Procurer. It's got a decent hold, negotiable yeild, is not an attractive target for ganks, and it's cheaper to replace if someone REALLY wants you dead.

I use my Retriever for small gangs with no hauling support. The Covetor should be strictly used for organized fleets.

EDIT: So ditto what was said above me.

Maybe it's just me, but I haven't had any trouble in high sec with any players. YET P I got a Retriever, might get a Procurer as well

2 retrievers will mine way more /hour than 1 retriever and 1 hauler alt

btw, unless you're getting ganked every few hours, the extra yield (due to fewer trips to station) will pay for itself in a solo retriever in a short amount of time.

A retriever, with modules, pays for itself in ~3 hours of mining scordite.

Just because you tanked a procurer for hisec mining doesn't mean you're winning the isk/hour war.

It would depend on who is issuing the permit. If it was an agent of The CODE (James 315 etc.) then providing you state the details of your permit and declare support for the CODE in your bio and are not found breaking CODE rules such as not AFK mining etc then you will be safe. BUT only safe from the attention of CODE agents.

There are many other individual gankers and ganking corps out there. A CODE mining permit will not protect you from them. If you mine in CODE territory, wherever that is, then a 10 million ISK permit for one year may well be a good investment.

Famous last words. The forum is the last place to say things like that. Twisted.

The Hulk & Covetor are fleet mining vessels. Only fly these if you have Orca support or a hauler alt.

The Retriever & Mackinaw are for solo mining. The Mackinaw can be fitted with enough tank to survive a single ganking vessel especially if it has Orca support but ultimately if enough ships are deployed any mining vessel can be ganked.

The Skiff with todays changes may be seen more in high sec belts as it is more easily defendable and I think has similar yield to the Mackinaw and a fairly decent ore hold. Increased drone damage so with several in fleet doing 'jet can mining' jet can thieves could come out on the bad side. 'Jet can mining' is still prevalent especially in corps heavily involved in mining ore.

The Procurer is a tough cookie and is usually used in high sec belts in busy systems or when you have attracted bad attention for whatever reason. It's hard to gank and, in my opinion, given that it can have a battleship sized tank it should have an increased build cost similar to a T1 battleship. But that's just my opinion. Smile It is also used for 'jet can mining' in mining corps nowadays. Primary methods to attack it are 'bumping', multiple jet can theft, or war decs.

The Venture is the initial mining vessel. Nuff said. It's T2 version, the Prospect, comes out today. Reains to be sen what that baby will be used for. Twisted

As you can see there are not any rubbish or useless mining vessels in the range and they each have different jobs.

Keep a low profile, gather intelligence on gankers, choose locations wisely, don't upset other miners and you will be fine. Smile

If you are trying to win the ISK/hour war you really shouldn't be mining in hi sec. Or maybe even mining at all.
