How can I turn off the messages that keep popping up over everything?

Hello!

I jst started playing and am having a hard time seeing what I am doing because these big blocks of help text keep popping up whenevr I hold my mouse over something I am trying to move toward or look at. This txt keeps blocking my view of things I want to see. I just got blown up by a belt pirate because I could not see him, and would like to know how to tun this off. I can't seem to figure it out, and the people in new player chat suggested asking here.

Welcome to the newly implemented tool tips.

The idea behind them is to make it easier to get access to information you need and to help new players familiarise themselves with the many complex aspects of the game.

If you feel that they fail in doing so, please add your feedback (particularly valuable from a new player perspective) in this thread. You'll find that your experience is far from unique… Oh, and they can't be turned off because… reasons.

If you mean the tooltips, you can't, at least not yet. They're new and the ability to kill them is a much desired feature.

They're meant to help newbies but are currently an annoying pain in the butt.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Guess you can increase the tool tip delay to the maximum so they don't obstruct your view that easily.

Nice. Looks like someone found a use for that humble bundle starter pack.

It's hardly a troll if it just restates the combined experience of everyone in a 50-page feedback thread…

Thank you. Now I know the right words "tool tips".

There are so many settings and things to remember in this game but this is the only problem so far no one could answer for me in the help chat. I will try to set a delay and see if that helps.

The troll attempt comes from the fact that OP is implying a single new player will get more attention from the devs, while a 50 page feedback thread goes completely ignored

That's hardly a troll either since the stated reason for flooding us with redundant and poorly thought-out information in a slow manner is that it helps newbies. The more newbies that come along and say it's not helpful, the bigger the chance that they'll actually wake up and listen to everyone saying the same thing.

Feedback from the intended target group should get more attention, after all.

Quoting for emphasis.

At the op, there are two sliders in the esc menu Here where you can set the amount of time your mouse is static before the tooltip shows (Not present at the time of that screen shot (it was directed at the relevant devs as part of feedback and I'm on my phone atm so it's the best I can do now.))

The feedback thread wasn't ignored, that's how we got the sliders in the first place, admittedly there not what everyone was asking for but they are better than having no control at all.

Again op, as tippa said, post this feedback in the appropriate thread and ccp will see it .

To my deepest regret, those messages cannot be turned off.

CCP has deemed them integral to the New Player Experience for whatever reason.

Is this really the best we can muster? We need another Somergate or bonus room scandal. These forums have been DOA lately.

Give it time, someone is always on the cusp of an inevitable meltdown and/or midlife crisis, all we have to do is wait....and watch. The industry changes promise many meltdown's

You don't really need to see anything in the 3D view to play EVE. You can even play it from the solar system map mode in many cases hah. You just need your overhead that shows all the targets and then your clickies at the bottom (though best to use hot-keys for those). Then stack your radar and chat to the left. If you really need to see a target in 3D, click on the target overview and make sure you have the "C" hotkey on to have the Camera auto look and track the selected target. Hovering your mouse on the overview will bring up a huge annoying info pop-up, but you can hold the pointer off to the side and just read it before pointing on it. Otherwise, learn your hotkeys, about the only way to avoid most of those funky new tool-tips. If there were a way, I'd turn them all off apart from weapon calculations.

edit: and another thing to point out with targeting that you seem to be having problems with. Hold the Crtl key then click your target from the overview list. This will start the lock as soon as you select it and them. So you don't need to look for a target in the 3D view at all, and was probably your main problem. Ctrl + Click on overview target list.

I think it's more of an issue when you are armor/shield tanking through your targets as opposed to kiting. Kiting I usually control everything through the 3D view, click on 3D targets and all that, but too hard to do if you are doing orbital dog-fighting or tracking straight through a blob of rats. That's really a job for overview targeting.

I'm in it for the money

It does feel like CCP has suddenly envisioned that everyone and their mother in Eve is a "new player". The tooltips are fine as they can be helpful one of these so-called "new players", but to someone who has played Eve for more than a couple weeks it's more in-the-way than useful.

I must have missed all the annoucements and fanfare from CCP, but apparently the there is an option to virtually turn them off now. Pres 'esc' and adjust the "Tooltips Delay" option to something towards "long" and they'll basically go away.

You can increase the delay for the tool-tips to the maximum value to effectively disable them... sometimes. Sometimes they'll still pop up anyway, as if there was no delay applied. It's really inconsistent. Additionally, the tooltips delay slider also controls the delay for ALL pop-ups, unfortunately. So if you want to delay all the in-space and on-overview crap, you also have to live with the same delay while mousing over solar systems in the map view.
