Guys In Real Life

Guys who roll female characters (guilty as charged).

When I first stepped into the EVE experience, I decided right off the bat that I wanted my main to be female, primarily because I've always appreciated the strong female archetype both in fiction and real life. It also helps that the character creator for EVE is second to none, and who doesn't like to see pretty things? In addition to that, the window into social interaction via assumed archetypes is endlessly fascinating, primarily on two levels: one, how my own interaction with other players seems to self-modify when I'm "playing" as a girl. My speech pattern, attitude, methods of response all become a bit different. Also interesting is how my female character is perceived by male characters in chat as well as on the forums, especially after they find out I'm a guy. There have been many discussions all across the web about "gamer culture" and the various kinds of behaviors that come with it with many a spotlight shone on the sexist attitudes that girl players have to endure; thankfully, I haven't really seen much of that here, especially as compared to other MMO's with a predominantly male fanbase.

I recently made the decision to roll a male alt just to mix it up a bit, provide a bit of balance to my gameplay. Do I have a preference? Well, as the saying goes "you never forget your first" and my female main will always be special to me, but I'm also having fun with this character, only on a different level. The experience is the same, yet different, if that makes any sense. My fair-sex character has definitely been hit on more though, amusingly enough by both male AND female players, which in turn begs the question...

Are ANY of us who we say we are in here?

I like having a pretty face to look at while playing. RL guy here though.

I think psychologically speaking, avatars are a reflection of:

1. what we want/desire to have.

or

2. what we want/desire to become.

This is the internet man!

The men are men

The women are men

And the children are FBI agents.

Don't forget that MMORPG stands for Mainly Men Online Role Playing Girls.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I choose whatever race/gender because of appearances. If I play a game for 100s of hours, I want the gear to look pleasing to the eye. Gender has nothing to do with this, really. Just aesthetics and gear/clothing design of the game.

I have female alts mainly to have a kind of "Charlie's Angels" thing going.

They always need ISK. Nothing really changes.

Or just another aspect of humans being lazy creatures of habit.

Old girlfriend of mine used to play SWG back in its prime with me, she always liked to join/make girls-only guilds, because it was usually just her and her friends, and they didnt appreciate some of the mroe common aspects of your average internet personality. So she insisted i roll a female character.

after doing this over 3-4 games, it became a habit, even long after we broke up.

Also, doesnt hurt 90% of games make the dudes Burly McMuscles and it looks obnoxious (though the Slutty McBoobs in most of those same games is rarely better)

Ironically this is the only game I actually play a dude in.

Someone said our role playing characters are a reflection of what we desire to have or become. I just realized I want to have or become a female bipedal sentient cow who is sometimes a bear sometimes a cat sometimes a narwhal sometimes a reindeer and sometimes a tree.....sounds about right.

EDIT: Also I am not a Kenneth.

You make a valid point, good Sir or Madam.

This thread is going places.. geez Doreen. P

I'm RL female, but I really like the fact that in EVE it doesn't matter a whole lot (at least in my experience). Whoever I am at the end of the day, I'm expected to learn to be a better pilot and pull my own weight. It makes EVE seem like the new frontier, and my RL job seem like stuck in the dark ages.

I made Sibs because I didn't identify with my first pilot (a super tough Minnie fighter pilot) and wanted to try out more of the engineering and science part of the game which is closer to what I do in my spare time. There is some fantasy involved of course, I get to have blue hair that I could never have for my RL job and a Bat'leth shaped tattoo across half my face.

I personally *like* the fact that in EVE (this game I like so much) the guys get to try out the role of being a girl. For some EVE players (like DK) it's just a pretty face with nothing else in common. For some other players it's a deeper connection, with some suspension of RL personality for the sake of playing a role or experiencing a different side of themselves. I think that all of these reasons are valid, and if it teaches you something about yourself then it's valuable. It's not to say that EVE avatars should teach us anything about the opposite gender, or that they should be modeled on reality (or that we should aim to carry any moral lessons out of an EVE persona).

My third pilot was a fellow I spent a lot of time on during character creation.. he was modeled exactly like Benedict Cumberbatch and I called him "Sherlock Khan". It was a really weird experience because as I would chat, I would hear the words in my head in his deep bass British accent. And sometimes if somebody asks a really stupid question on Help chat, I'd imagine Sherlock Khan (and his lovely cheekbones) just grimacing, like he might on the TV show. Anyway, it was too many pilots for me and I biomassed him, and lost were any lessons in being a guy I could learn through him..

My main is simply an extension of myself (yes, this one).

My other characters are simply characters that I wish, from time to time, to portray (for various purposes) or were created simply to perform a useful function and their gender is completely inconsequential.

So yes, I do have a muscular pirate looking alt that I use when I want you to believe that your gank was completely random... and had nothing to do with your comments on the forum or in game. Pirate
