In Eve for eternity...

I just read the sad news about the passing of an Eve player... many others sharing our common passion have passed away, and left us for a better place. I have a special thought for all of them, as well as for their loved ones in RL.

Could it be envisioned to somehow incorporate an eternity feature in new Eden, to remember the departed?

Something that would trigger the memory of them in-game
Something that is not taxing for the servers, the developers or the systems in general
Something that would trigger questions by new players, and give all players a wonderful sense of eternity
Something that would show the nature of their eve life

May be a ghostly sighting of their most skilled character's favorite ship warping in their favorite system, with an occurrence of the phenomenon linked to their length of being an active eve player.
Possibly selected with no intervention other than a statistical analysis of their recorded activity

Can it be?

The least server obtrusive thing I can think of is reserving a spot for them on your bio. Anything else, like a ghost ship or a 2-3 second memorial on the view screen in CQ or things like that seem forced, and would be competing for eyeball time with all the other entries. It's better to have the people with the context carry on the memories.

You can also name your POSes, ships, etc. in memoriam.

Joffy Aulx-Gao for CSM. Fix links and OGB. Ban stabs from plexes. Fulfill karmic justice.

Make your own memorials.
Having CCP do them for every deceased player would get impersonal and generic.

Enjoying the rain today? ;)

While the idea is good at heart, I have to agree with the others above me, it would be best if we all just kept our own personal memorials.
I've experienced the unfortunate and untimely passing of a fellow EVE player as well. And the way I personally keep a memorial is firstly, that person will always hold a spot in my bio. And secondly whenever I have my ways around a certain system we used to base our old corp in, I always sidetrack from what I'm doing, warp to one of the old safe spots or something and just have a moment of silence to remember.
And I unfortunately live halfway across the world from his family, otherwise i would of course pay them a visit too. Maybe one day when I have the monies and time.

Oh! I almost forgot, his name IS in fact on a memorial! Me and some fellow EVE players that knew him, approached CCP and asked for his name to be put up on the monument over in Reykjavík, and they agreed to it (Love you CCP <3).

What would really be appropriate... taken right from modern day traditions in some parts of the world...

A Day of The Dead, Dia de Muertos

The best part... CCP could offer new "masks" or face art for all characters through NeX or a free gift... people already love their tatoos and body art... this goes one step further in that direction -- but for a special commemoration of Absent Friends.

Thus, participate if you wish -- nothing "forced" on anyone. It's all done at the avatar level by personal choice.

I support the idea of in-game memorials/tributes. Perhaps renaming certain systems or stars to pay homage to players who have impacted the game to a certain degree and are no longer with us. My reasons may differ from some of the others out there. I Love the lore that Eve is built around, but I have especially grown fond of the lore that have been written by players over the years and an idea like this serves as a building block to an emergent environment that I hope CCP will focus more on, much like B-R.

I think a structure/statue by the EvE Gate with all passed players would be good, however knowing the eve community we would vandalize it by putting giant penises and swastikas around it...

Like I said, a statue by the eve gate. If someone passes, send a GM a message to put the person's name in or something

I don't want to seem cold. But no.

Code a memorial to people that 499,995 out of 500,000 subs don't know and don't care about is just a waste of resources.

It's up to the players to remember - for instance, each year there's a roam with shiny ships that shoots everything (even blues) across nullsec space. It eventually turns into a big thunderdome where blues kill each other, all to commemorate Vile Rat.
