Should I make a mining alt or just have mining on my main?

Hi Everyone!

I'm relatively new to EVE Online, and I am currently trying to get a Mining Barge. I have seen a lot of people say on the forums that if you want a miner you should make a mining alt. I don't fully understand the reason for this. You can only train one skill at a time, even if you have a couple characters, so what would be the reason for the mining alt? If I train the alt, I can't train the main and vise versa. Wouldn't it be better to just do all the training on your main?

I would appreciate any insight you guys might have on this!

Thank you,

When i started i had it all on one character as there are skills that cross over, Like drones for Example, I suppose the main Benefit to having a specific Alt is for specific Implants and the places you Mine could be a long way from your main Character so reduces traveling around.

When people talk about creating a mining alt they mean on a separate account so that you don't lose training time for other skills on your main.

If you intend to go into mining/industry as a primary activity that shouldn't be a concern. On the other hand, if you want to train combat skills on your main without interruption and have mining as only a casual activity, you could do what I did: create a miner on a second account, train him to a decent level (doesn't take long) then transfer him to you main account and close the other account.

Or you could use the PLEX method to buy dual training, but I think my way is cheaper.

Do I lose any advantage (other than time) if I train mining for 10 days and then just switch over to combat skills?

It's good to have two accounts. One trains and does the exciting explodey stuff. The other trains industry and mining skills if you wish. This way, if you have a really sucky day with PvP you are still cranking out isk on your alt.

Also, train Command Center Upgrades and Interplanetary Consolidation to 4 on both accounts. Planetary Interaction makes you passive isk even when not logged on.

CCP ignore me please, I make too much sense.

No.

Only disadvantage would be those skill points might potentially cause you to need a more expensive clone if you get podded. The incremental upgrades aren't that bad though if it's only a few days you're planning on sinking into it.

Unless you're willing to drop a PLEX for multiple training queues, just train it on your main. As mentioned, a lot of skills cross over. Shield and combat drone skills can be helpful in low and null where the rats hit heavy. The only reason I could see a mining alt being useful is if you mine in null but play in high-sec, because the travel time could be a nuisance (even still, a jump clone can probably fix that if you commit to mining for a day).
