Ship colours and 'skinning'

One of the odd things about the new ship skins is how they are created. Effectively each new coloured ship has new typeID that can subsequently use to trade on the market. While useful, its not scalable when you consider that even 8 colours to choose from would create 56 or so new ship typeIDs when you could apply 3 of them to the ship.

One of the things that others have noted is why not have them like rigs.

3 colour slots, which cost maybe 5M per colour.

Add an industry process or even exploration drops for colour components/blueprints and create a market. Make it limited, perhaps Serpentis space drops 'blacks' a lot, Blood space, more 'reds'. Empire space get some basic 'blue/green/yellow/orange' types. Exotic officer colours (golds and silvers, etc) from plexes.

Instead of having a multitude of typeIDs it would work like rigs in every sense. Can be traded, can be destroyed, repackaging etc all work the same way.

Rendering on the client would require a tiny amount of data about the rigs, and could be turned off like brackets, for lag issues.

Yup - its a slow day at work.

That system they have in place is not the intended final outcome of how ship coloring is supposed to work. It's really just a test bed for what's marketable and to see (based on player demand) whether the developers should make a brand new ship customization feature a priority for upcoming releases.

If you like any of the older ship models (original artwork) better than the redesign of your favorite hull and don't want them to be lost forever, support ship customization and this feature request.

this is one of the better ideas: I'm sure I've seen it already posted as a 1 colour slot, with a chip in it that contains all the colours for that ship, since there's something like 7 or 8 colours on any given ship - before shadows are taken into account

For posting an idea into F&I: come up with idea, try and think how people could abuse this, try to fix your idea - loop the process until you can't see how it could be abused, then post to the forums to let us figure out how to abuse it..... If your idea can be abused, it WILL be.
