Anyone one running 3 Clients on 3 monitors?

I want to run 3 clients in windowed mode over an extended desktop on 3 monitors so 1 different client is on each monitor (2x dvi monitors 1x hdtv)

From what I can find from google this may be possible with 1 ati card running all 3, the 2 monitors, then the hdtv via a display port to hdmi adaptor?.

Im abit confused tbh so if anyone is running 3 clients on 3 monitors and could post thier setup id be most greatfull.

Just to add, im already running 3 clients over 2 monitors with no problems, its just adding the 3rd display im confused at.

Thanks

Its also possible to do it with one card, 2 monitors and a separate notebook (or computer) running the third client. You can then use that second PC as a third monitor, with software such as Input Director (free).

what kind of video card do you have?

the problem i had with my radeon 5870 is that it only provides power for 2x dvi outputs even though it includes plenty of display ports for up to 6 screens

if you connected 3 dvi or (hdmi) screens to it the card would only power 2 and the 3rd would simply not work.

the solution to this (what i did) is get a usb-powered "active" display port adapter for the 3rd screen

i later built a pc for a friend of mine that used a 6950 "flex" edition that could power more outputs to support more than 2 screens. (wish i got that instead of the 100$ adapter ahah)

the other option is to get a 2nd video card...

You don't actually *need* display ports anymore (although they are superior to DVI and VGA) - get one of the latest saphire cards it will work with 3x dvi or HDMI cables and they're extremely cheap.

Display ports are actually quite awesome and are generally cheaper to manufacture than analog versions but alot of countries have special tax on completely digital video cards for some reason and slow uptake has resulted in them not replacing DVI, VGA and LVDS as planned.

Anyway, if your card has a displayport + 2x dvi/ vga ports you'll need an active converter (Display port uses data packages and not RGB signals and so needs to be converted to an analogue signal) to get it to work on a non displayport screen (which cost more than a standard vga / dvi screen which is also stupid but what can you do).

Ati cards often come with atleast one HDMI (or mini HDMI), 2x DVI ports and a display port (unless you have a newer version as mentioned above or eyefinity version which has upto 6 mini display ports) but you can only use 3 of these, and one of these 3 MUST be the Display Port.

Hope that helps.

Set to Fixed Window mode, once in theres a drop down menu that allows you to pic a monitor for you're window. May work but I promise nothing.

Don't ask about Italics, just tilt your head.

My mobo only has 1x PCI-E x16 slot. It also has a PCI-E x8 slot (but this is physically smaller than the x16 and I didnt have much look searching for one to fit it on the net).

currently im running 1 ati radeon HD 4850

That's similar to how I do it.

(2) 1680x1050 displays stacked vertically on the main PC. Clients run as 1024x768 windows or 1600x900 windows.
(1) Laptop hooked up to a 1680x1050 display to the left.

Connect the desktop/laptop with Synergy so that I can just move the mouse off one screen and onto the other to change which PC gets input from the mouse/keyboard. Plus I get a shared clipboard between the two machines making it easy to copy links/info from one to the other.

I have three 22" monitors but I run my eve client in 5040 x 1050 res. with all video setting on high.

But sometimes I do put in in window mode & run three clients (one for each screen), but I do have to turn down the video settings to low or med when I do this.

That indeed takes a special card... not any crossfire/SLI setup can render one same game client and send output to three different ports.

I run 3 clients in windowed mode (medium settings usually) on three 23" monitors using one AMD 6870 graphics card. Two monitors are connected to the DVI ports and one is connected to the Mini Displayport using a $25 Active DVI to mini Displayport adapter. Setup only took about 10-15 minutes, which includes the ability to expand one client to stretch across all 3 monitors.

Since Crucible, I've developed a habit of setting one client on high graphics on all 3 monitors and then manually piloting wherever I need to go while sightseeing with 3 monitors showing the nebulae in all their glory.

I believe it's still possible to find PCI (not 'express') GFX cards. Pop one of those in next to your PCI-E card. Problem solved. It's what I do on my rig when I'm running my flight sims with multiple monitors.

x16 card should work in x8 slot at ever so slightly reduced peak performance (not even 5% slower).
If you have insertion problems you can simply cut out a thin slit into the plastic back end on the x8 slot on the MoBo.

P.S. Assuming your MoBo warranty expired or you don't care about it. And assuming you even need to.

how does this actually work, will my windows 7 desktop now extend across all 3 screens?

DO NOT DO THIS!

While it would technically work. A PCI card is the worst thing you can put into your computer as far as performance goes.

A ATI 4850 will not power 3 displays on its own, but a 5000/6000 series card will (Nvidia will not. They all are limited to only 2 displays per card so no surround or anything until you go SLI).

You could pick up say a 6970/6950 and like said above, get a active displayport to DVI connector (unless you have a DP capable monitor) and you would be golden with 3 displays and easily enough power to power them all.

I also reccomend a 2G version of those cards to help allow you to run the textures and such at max across 3 screens. It may not need it at 1080P, but it may use it for 3 displays.

And considering my experiences with 4800 series cards, the 6950/70 will be faster, and cooler without using more power. Another thing. The 6850/70 reccomendation is just a high end ballpark incase you want to play eve maxed out on 3 monitors, I believe it could do it well. If you are on a budget, any 5000/6000 series card with 2dvi+DP or 1dvi/1hdmi/1dp can do 3 monitors, but you wouldn't want to go much lower than a 5770 id say.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=100006662&isNodeId=1&Description=active+displayport <-- Displayport to DVI adaptor. It must be an active one to work correctly and also will allow you to use Eyefinity if you decide to span the Resolution 3 wide ;)

Also make sure if you havent already, to follow the steps to have 2 seperate eve client's with 1 eve install. It works great and allows your client to remember what monitor had which fullscreen window for each account. You will launch the game with 3 separate shortcuts. Easy. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Multiple_clients
