Getting close to flying one,
Is a rail proteus viable. Pvp and pve?

I imagine it'll work well for killing frigs imo. I.e. stalking relic sites. Those frigs are frail but they're also fast. Domination target painter ftw. You can make decent money that way. Blaster proteus can do 1200 dps so rail proteus are frowned upon. I say if it works roll with it.

Rail Proteus is fine for pve, but you'll want a nasty blaster Proteus for pvp.

I used a rail Proteus for PvE, long before they fixed rails. It worked fine, especially with a drone sub to assist.

The prot isn't really fast enough for kiting in pvp.

Rail Proteus can be good for PvP but its more of a fleet based ship with a big engagement range, for smaller gangs or solo you'll definitely want blasters.

For PvP, the Proteus has what is flat out the best cloaky weapon subsystem.

Not using blasters would really be a crime in a situation where you can get to within 3km of the guy before decloaking.

For PvE... I really don't have a ton of experience with that, but I would imagine that a Tengu is far better suited to it than a Proteus.

I agree with this. Proteus is very slow for a cruiser, at about 1400m/s with a 1600mm plate. Catching targets is the hardest part of a fight with this thing. So if you aren't going Cloaking, I highly recommend a small gang to run with.

If you want to use Railguns in PVP, you'll want all the tracking you can get. The Dissonic Encoding Platform subsystem gives you +7.5% tracking per level, on top of the +10% damage/faloff. The tradeoff is no drones, but drones can get primaried easily by proficient pilots.

I have a fit that I use in fleets that uses 6x 250mm Railgun II's, 3 mag-stabs, dessonic and dissolution subs, and a Metastasis Adjuster II rig. Assuming all skills at V, you get 695dps (799oh) with navy antimatter with an optimal range of 18km and falloff at 38, and it tracks well enough to ward off frigates at range. With Spike you can reach out to 88km if you really need to.

Combined with a Fed-Navy Web (14km range), you can hold onto and crush just about any HAC from outside medium neut range. Less damage than with blasters, but way more flexible with strong damage projection.

Rail prot is fkn sweet for PVP, especially large scale.
They still get 800 turret dps up close and hit for 400+ out to their lock range.
We had a 10-12 man gang in mostly sentry ships camping a WH in our chain last week at ranges from 30-50km. we took in 4 rail prots with a couple guards and shat all over them.
10/10 would recommend.

keep in mind that a rail prot is NOT a kite ship, it's a brawler with excellent damage projection.

There is no Bob.

Rail Proteus works in both kiting and fleet environments.

For kiting you basically fly it like an expensive rail deimos with enhanced point range. It's a bit slow though, but there are ways to deal with that...

As far as I know there are several entities who use rail proteus in fleet warfare (med and large scale).
Since the med rail buff they are tankier than legions, with less tracking but better range flexibility.
(Don't pin me down on that, I'm not an expert on this scale)

For solo work you would have to make sure nothing get's under your tracking.

I've seen people using heavily buffered cloaky rail proteuses for ambushes and gatecamping.

Confirming.

Rail Proteus are amazing in Medium>Large scale engagements, 600-700 DPS out to around 30 with CNAM, 300K+ Tanks and bonused tackle is a mean package, they are basically just better pulse Legions.

The real question is, why use a rail Proteus when you can use a rail Tengu?

If you ever crossed paths with a pack of rail-astartes (they shred things), railproteus do the same with longer pointrange.

It's kinda the EVE equivalent of the A-10 Warthog: not pretty, not fast, but literally built like a flying tank. Armored up with six barrels full of bad news looking to ruin someone's day. Not indestructible, but damn tough to kill. Twisted

Or just use the long range scramb to stay out of hostile blasterrange and smile with 700+ railgun dps =)

turns you into " not possible to kill due to countering the hostile"
