Should you be able to write your character into the chronicles of EVE online, how would you portray yourself? Who would you deem to be the villians? What is your story? Please share. :)
Fal Shepard
#2 - 2014-02-10 23:23:39 UTC  |  Edited by: Fal Shepard
Share here? Fal Shepard was an orphan, but raised by the leader of a small pirate fleet called the Black suns who she still loves as a parent. On her 22 birthday, Fal wants more from life than raiding ships and small colonies and leaves the fleet behind after recieving her father's blessing. Fal settles on a lawless space station deep in uncharted space outside of any officially faction owned territory. The station belongs to no one but the rival gangs who constantly fight for control. As hostile as it may be, "Quasar" is more than just a battlefield. The massive station is also home to the millions of ordinary people and families who wish to live where it is possible to lay low, and questions are not asked. Fal begins her new life as a salvager and smuggler, and recruits a small crew.

A few monthes later, in a bar, Fal over hears a group of Mercs that the Sisters of Eve is searching for a team of noncapsuleers to investigate the fate of a relief team transporting supplies to Quasar. After a talk and a little... Physical persuasion, Fal is resentfully allowed to join.

The trip does not go well. A few days into the search, and with nothing to show for it, the "Hangman's Noose" is attacked by an unknown entity. All hands are accounted as lost. Fal however, survives after being sucked out a hull breech in a space suit. On the verge of death, she is finally recovered hours later by another salvage ship who end up exposing her to Vitoc.

For a year, Fal slaved away in a hull manufacturing facility owned by a small mercnary group called the Falconeers. Monthes after her arrival, she learns about a group among the slaves that plan to escape. Monthes longer of preparation, the group begins their revolt.

The riot fails, miserably. Half the revolters were killed and cost Fal her right eye. Fal and the remaining revolters are seperated to different stations accross the galaxy to live the rest of their lives. Fal's transport ship is intercepted, however, by a small Minmatar fleet. Fal is rescued, until the Minmatar begin background checks on all the slaves. Narrowly avoiding this, Fal goes back to Quasar to retrieve her ship, the Nightningale, and her crew who had dispersed not long after her disappearance.

Lol, I'm going to stop there as it is getting a little long. This is because i really am writing a book about this charecter...Actully this charecter is based off the book and is not Eve related. The rest goes (that will fit the Eve universe) Fal is forced to hide her Vitoc addiction and tries to live a normal salvager's life until news of her father's fleet being destroyed by the same mysterious force reaches her. With renewed purpose, she leaves her new life to avenge her father's death. Then it goes into her past that her real father was a Valkleer general of the Minmatar freedom fighters. After loosing his wife to assassination, he has no choice but to hide infant Fal. He gives her to his old friend Oreon Rokore, the leader of the Black Suns, to look after hoping his enemies do not learn of her existance.

From the ashes of our defeat, we will be reborn. With these chains with which we are bound, we will become indivisible. To those who showed us no mercy, we will give no sympathy. For the flames that burn our cities, we will douse in injustice's blood

Depends on your definition of 'villains'.
I don't mean to go 'you're doing it wrong' here, but I believe EVE is too gray in that sense for the standard black and white protagonist(s) vs. antagonist(s) scenarios.

Not long after I created Anys, a background started developing for her and before I knew it, I had a fairly substantial background written-up for her that I loaded onto the EVELopedia a few months ago. Her "villain" was actually a virtually unknown pathogen (the details I'm finally back putting the finishing touches on) that nearly killed her, but also catapulted her to capsuleer status.

Her RP Profile needs a little updating, updates I'll probably work on over the weekend.

I think he means who your character defines as good and evil, or rather, if they're above such a thing. The usual stereotypical villain is Amarr if you're Minmatar or Gallentean, or Caldari if you're Gallentean, or Sansha if you're anybody, or the Goons if you're anyone but the Goons. For instance, I'd say my character has a substantial, overt prejudice against Amarrians and a not-so overt prejudice against Caldari for his time spent with the lot. He's pretty fond of the Minmatar (in that typical "Oh, you're damaged people, I must help you" way that you'd expect from a Gallentean) and he's a quiet patriot, though too much of a hedonist to take up arms in FW.

That sort of thing. Have fun with it!

Pretty much what Leopold said. There is no villain but for those few who would deny me my isk!

If I were to write my character into the background (though I think we're all doing that just by playing), I'd like to go down in the annals of fictive history as a generally fair minded trader and industrialist who accepts that sometimes violence is unavoidable. Essentially a pragmatist who doesn't try to dwell too long on the darker aspects of being a capsuleer, and for whom good company is it's own reward.

Ael isn't going to be making the kind of waves that get statues erected or history book written, but she's a builder and would at least like to lay a few key stones in her time in the cluster, even if they were never attributed to her efforts. Three core goals that might be chronicle worthy come to mind:

  • Build an Outpost (provide most of the materials and push the build buttan, ownership is secondary/outright unimportant)
  • Build a Stargate (watch this space)
  • Develop a constellation of nullsec economically and industrially (needs moar null-indy love - mechanics I mean, not making it safer)

These are the kind of things I'd love to achieve, and should they be achieved, have a tiny scrap of a Chronicle memorialise whatever contribution was made by my character and the others involved. Epic battles are fun, and I get my share of killing done, but naval/scifi violence fiction is a penny per dozen right now - only so many metaphors and similies to describe someone pewpewing a load of other people.

Then she is the villain. (to the cries of "Oh you heartless bovine...")

Well, Himnos became a Capsuleer around 10 years ago, joined up with the Red Dagger fleet in Ignebauer (Sp?), and proceeded to putter around Hi sec for the next few years. He joined the Gallente Factional War just before the Gallente threw off the Caldari control of the warzone from Damarr Rocarion and his motley band of misfits. After that he spent a year or two doing PI with a corp of close friends in low sec Placid, then discovered Wormholes. And loved them.

He currently has Wormhole Fever, and will probably die if he doesn't dive into one at least once a week.

Who is the Villain you ask? The answer is depending on whom you ask! Even out here in the "real world", villain and protagonist are based on perception. If a body has grown up poor, had to scrape by every day of his life for peanuts, then Banks and Government are the Villain. If you're robbed one day, the robber is the villain, but in his mind maybe YOU are the villain! Perception is everything.

Hero and villain is entirely subjective to your point of view and your morals.

My character has an extensive background, but there is a lot about him that people don't know or have access to.

Writing chronicles about your character is fine, but most people prefer to learn things about your character by interacting with them. One of the many reasons Vulx's background is so vague at certain points.

Alaric here is just a typical shady and shiftless character that relies on skill at basic thuggery to make himself useful to someone willing to employ him. He has spent years training almost nothing but combat and ship skills, inept at even basic industry. Even the little bit of research and invention he does is restricted to common PvP modules.
No real connection to his Minmatar roots or the struggles of his people. 'His people' are who ever he is flying with. His employment history notes a tremendous loyalty as he's really only been in a couple corps in his life.

After leaving high sec for a life of piracy in Molden Heath, his security status finally bottomed out and polite society would no longer have him.
He moved to Cloud Ring in sov null, where sec status doesn't mark a man as it does where the Empires hold sway. There, a man is judged by the speed of his gatling lasers, and willingness to die in a ball of fire.

Bad guys? The miners, clearly.

This is why I stopped wasting time on the rebel slaves by fighting in the militia, and dedicated myself to the teachings of the CODE.
Oh I used to burn the slaves in their pods with a song in my heart. But the real slaves of New Eden don't even serve the Empress as they should. They besmirch the gift of immortality by flying barges.

Runaway slaves can be dealt with. But those that would enslave themselves need a more immediate purifying in the cleansing heat of laser fire. Theirs is more of a mercy-killing.

I left a nice home in low sec (two bedroom quarters, statues- but maintenance still hasn't fixed my damn door yet), to live in the filth and grime of high sec. Sacrificing comfort and civility (pirates are a better read bunch than miners) so I can try to bring enlightenment, and emergent gameplay, to the true slave class of New Eden.
Even if the smelly brutes resist our charity with vulgarity and derision.

We Agents, rise above.

If there were ever a big EVE movie or series, I would love for Graelyn to make an appearance, but certainly not as some sort of protagonist. He would be the recurring wise old man, showing up at incredibly 'convenient' times, mischievously assisting the heroes/villians with advice, cryptic witticisms, and pertinent stories from the old days that would include key bits of info that others could use to get out of sticky situations.

And, as the heroes disembark from another barely-survived adventure, they would spot him in the distance, off in the corner, sipping whiskey with a knowing smile and a nod...

In a universe filled with trillions (or more) humans, I don't see any of my characters in EVE being a focal point of anything right now. I have fleshed out a basic background on Kallie. But I have not put her in to anything grand just yet. I mostly adhere to the rule that you can play a small part in the universe of the story. But you don't get to dictate the story. Canon is what the developers create, not me. You can have a small battle that the vast majority of the universe doesn't know about. But you did not personally whisper strategy in to the ear of the Caldari leaders and they act on it. That's ego. And it doesn't work that way.

That's a very good way to put it. Also, if you have questions about roleplay or want some tips on developing your character, just let me know and I'll send you my template I made for helping people get deeper into roleplay.

For anyone who knows Lord Draconis(Vulxanis), they know that he is not really all that physically powerful, meaning his corporation is really small, and he doesn't command large fleets of ships against other capsuleers. However, he is well known for his strong personality, large vocabulary, views on Amarrian slavery, and especially extreme intolerance of anyone associated with the Sani Sabik cult (as well as Sansha loyalists). That has affected things beyond sometimes what I am even aware of. One simple comment can affect someone's opinion, and change the course of player interactions for possibly thousands of others. That's the beauty of EVE. I'm not saying that's the only way for you to illicit change, but it's one of them.

Now, if there is a significant enough response from the roleplay community(or players in general), it is possible for game mechanics or even canon to be tweaked. Hard, but it is possible. Just look at the Jita riots. When players really want something to happen, and enough of them protest, CCP hears them.

But yes, for the most part, capsuleers are not really that significant on their own. Baseliners(NPCs) may not think so, as capsuleers are seen almost as like demigods to some of them, but you can really only directly affect your immediate surroundings, and the degree of effect can depend on your level of influence, assets, etc. In some ways it is easier for an Amarrian Holder to have an influence on others, and in other ways some people with a lesser station can incite unique phenomena.

It's just depend on how you act. Or rather, your character, acts.

I tend to see EVE as having grey and black morality... meaning there are morally ambiguous factions, and straight up evil ones. I mean, there are some factions that's actions and doctrines really can't be easily portrayed as anything besides being evil. Blood Raiders abduct children and bleed them and the Sansha's Nation abducting everyone they can get their hands on and plugging them into a New Eden version of the Matrix.

My character is a faithful servant of the empress, but sadly disagreed with most of the rest of Amarrian society about slavery.

After finishing his training and becoming a capsuleer, he waited exactly long enough to enter his first ship until he send a message to his father explaining how he thought slavery was an abomination and that the Amarrian society would have to change before damnation takes all of them.

Even though his father was a liberal holder, he was of course forced to disown his son immediately. Since then this weirdo is travelling around New Eden as some sort of space archaeologist, trying to find out more about the civilizations which came before us.

Occasionally he helps Minmatar or Gallente-corporations with their troubles, including shooting at Amarrian ships. Without his skill at diplomacy, that last part would have made him KOS in Amarr space already.

His greatest achievement until now was sacrificing an entire cruiser just to get a pirate assault frigate he disliked. But since he pays more then the average capsuleer, there sre always desperate people lining up to crew his ships, so there was no permanent loss.

Just a delinquent Republic Military School dropout. Never met my parents.

I couldn't leave Ammold fast enough. I only got as far as one jump away. Emogranlan, which was a small mission hub.

My becoming a capsuleer granted me a certain freedom, to roam. I think it's in my genetics; a Drifter Vherokir is the stereotype. But a guy's gotta eat. I learned how to use a salvager module, at first begging in Frarn and Emogranlan for salvaging rights. Eventually I learned it was more profitable to probe the battleships down myself and just take their things. Eventually I was living out of Dodixie as well. Would go to Jita to sell. What a place.

Petty theft and running salvage was my main source of life the early days. Barely a slap on the wrist from CONCORD. It just got me by, I couldn't fly anything nice anyway, just watched my wallet grow. Started enjoying the finer Citadel cigars and spiced wines from Molden Heath. The occasional strippers.

Getting recruited almost randomly into a corporation I met a man who I won't name, who's goal was to loot everything from the corporation we were in. I thought it was a great idea myself, I've got no loyalty to these other pilots anyway.

By the way, through a cousin, I met a pirate that invited me on a roam. We killed a Taranis and podded him. It was a 3v1, the poor guy didn't have much of a chance. Was I supposed to like it? Normally by adolescence, a Minmatar has gone through the Voluval. (I used to get teased pretty bad in Republic Military School growing up.) I couldn't shake how good I felt killing someone, so I met with a Vherokir shaman. He said it was time. My Voluval marking changed my face forever. A murderer with a conscience..

..Someone did steal that corp's assets by the way. It wasn't me. Now I know ninja salvaging ain't honest. Or blowing up a ship and podding someone..

I flew with that corp thief for a while, all he wanted to do was grief, grief , grief. Started wondering if that's what I really wanted myself. These bears couldn't really shoot back, they would hide behind station guards. We had our own corporation, running a little extortion, some assault and battery. If it was slow I would go back to salvaging but I was doing less and less of it. I was pretty much living out of Jita now.

One fateful day in Arnon, I agreed to a Rifter 1v1 with a black jacket. I'll never forget that rush, my first taste of PVP. But Lowsec is scary, we aren't supposed to go there? This according to these 'tough' highsec griefers I been flying with.

Got to know a lot of other highsec thugs. The guy I flown with from that player corp was cool, until he got in front of his friends. He wasn't treating me very well. Like I was just some scrub. In front of his friends he scrammed and webbed my Rifter, popped it, and to my surprise, popped my pod.

I was pissed off. We had a contract to grief some miners. I made a secret deal with the 'carebears' to awox my own CEO. And I did.

But I had failed to kill him with my Rupture. He was able to break my scram and warp off. I only got half of the pay. The carebear was still thankful.

*Brink shakes his head, lighting another cigarette.*

"Highsec" Brink said, as smoke billows out of his mouth. "Empire space."

I knew they were afraid of lowsec. I'm a Drifter, now I'm on the run. Always had to stay a step ahead of CONCORD, I'll never know how ahead I am of the mercenaries and griefers. Who can I trust? I remembered that fight with that guy with the Rifter jacket on. He made some introductions and I was a prospect in the Black Rebel Rifter Club. Getting my patch was one of my greatest achievements. Trading my Salvager II for a 200mm Autocannon II was the best thing I ever did. I flew with them for over two and a half years.

Pirate

A bonus to flying with those guys? Molden Heath had lots of other Vherokir. For the first time, I felt home.

CONCORD never really paid attention to my actions in highsec. Before I knew it I was -10 and my standings with every faction are completely shot to Hell. I have several counts of murder, theft, extortion, they don't even know the half of it. But they won't touch me in lowsec and null.

Nowadays I live out in lowsec Essence, but I feel like picking up and moving again. Another Vherokir stereotype - I own a small bar. I know for a fact I've served undercover Federal Intelligence Officers drinks. I behave myself when I have to.

I now fly with the Screaming Hayabusa. Still a criminal. Twisted It's not always sportscars and women but I am loving life on boosters and booze. Frigate enthusiast, my favorite is still the Rifter.

Not much to tell. Orphaned at an early age when her parents died as a result of an Amarrian "cleansing" incursion against an outlying Sebiestor facility where her family was stationed; a brutal act of terror which instilled within her a burning hatred for the Amarr and their twisted theology. A natural tinkerer, she was born with an aptitude for engineering tech and quickly developed a deep appreciation for the Minmatar ship aesthetic, the deadly Rifter being her weapon of choice. Antisocial to a fault, she tends to keep her own company, content to roam the stars, earning a living as she goes and striking targets of her own choosing for her own reasons. If you've earned her trust, you have a loyal wing companion for life. But if you've crossed her, she will personally deliver you into death's cold embrace... continuously.

Cool
