Add Drone Repair Bay

Something that I think would be an extremely nice addition to the game to help out our pilots that enjoy using drones (and fighters and fighter bombers to an extent) would be the addition of an active high-slot module that repair armor and hull damage to drones. Now, I would add this with the addendum that shields upon the drones redocking recharge shields instantly as ships do, and that pulling them back before they take hull damage is ideal in ANY given situation.

This is an active module that would use capacitor, and would have small, medium, large, and capital variants respectively. The fitting requirements for it would be a bit more than the equivalent armor repair for its class size, and each would be focused on repairing its size equivilant. You would not be able to repair small drones with a heavy drone repair bay. Here's some baseline stats I'll put out for them:

Light Drone Repair Bay 1:
10 PG
25 CPU
Activation Cost: 50 GJ
Cycle Time: 10s
Drone Repair Amount: 50 HP per cycle

Medium Drone Repair Bay 1:
200 PG
50 CPU
Activation Cost: 200 GJ
Cycle Time: 15s
Drone Repair Amount: 150 HP per cycle

Large Drone Repair Bay 1:
2500 PG
75 CPU
Activation Cost: 500 GJ
Cycle Time: 20s
Drone Repair Amount: 450 HP per cycle

Capital Fighter Repair Bay 1:
150000 PG
100 CPU
Activation Cost: 2750 GJ
Cycle Time: 45s
Drone Repair Amount: 1500 HP per cycle


NOTE: This module can be overheated. What the heat stats are I'm not exactly sure; possibly along the same lines as normal repair modules. The repair goes to ALL drones in the bay simultaneously instead of individual drones, giving them a distinct advantage over RR. If you think this is too powerful, I would be completely amenable to having it be one at a time; I just thought it would be good to give it a distinct role that it performs better than the secondary function of RR working on drones in-space.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Drones do not insta-regen their shields when they dock back into the drone bay. I had that conflated with ships docking in my mind for some reason since when I started this thread I had docked to regen my shields after a fight. My mistake, carry on.

It also repairs hull AND armor, instead of one or the other. And RR is NOT a dedicated module to drone repair.

...It repairs all drones INSIDE the bay at the same time. If you can't see why having a dedicated drone repair module over RR is a good idea, I suggest you take the time to do actually use drones a little more, since you don't seem to have a good grasp on what either of us are talking about.

That being said, yes, RR works for drone repair currently to an extent. There are things that it does NOT do which I THOUGHT I explained very clearly:
-repairs both hull and armor
-repairs all docked drones simultaneously
-does not require a target lock that can be disrupted
-does not require multiple modules to repair multiple drones

I must agree with the others that have spoken against this idea. RR works fine. Don't like it? Don't use drones.

as highly invested in drones (number of skills at 5 already others varries at 3-4) I'm very aware of the issues.

1. when u drones gets aggro pull them back asap and re-launch.
2. if your drones dies who gives a damn... 500k for t2 scout drone is dirty cheap and they are very powerful. Since I've upgraded to T2 I've never lost single drone even on L4s.
3. on station you can repair all drones with 1 click for like 100k if they are hurt bad.

Hm. Here's a few good reasons to have this vs RR that can be translated to more efficient gameplay.

-Being able to directly repair your drones in the bay instead of outside, where they might continue to be shot at by players in pvp or particularly annoying NPCs *cough* sleepers *cough* is advantageous as it allows a more direct, fast method of repairing your drones while you're in the middle of something without risking them being shot at, and being much more quick about it because again, it repairs ALL of them at the same time.

Also, the argument that "We already have this function in-game; we don't need it" is inherently fallacious. Here's an extension of that line of reasoning to explain how silly it sounds:

"Why do we need jump drives when we have gates? Why not get rid of jump drives and let capitals through gates? They do the same thing, right?"
"Why do we need reprocessing when you can mine? It's all just minerals, right?"
And so on.

See, the question is not so much, "Why should we add this if we already have something in-game for it that kind of works", it's "Why isn't there a module like this in-game when there's a need for it without a module designed around that need?" RR happens to be useful for repairing drones in the same way cargo scanning just happens to be useful for relic hunting. It is not the original intended gameplay, and while yes; creativity and flexibility in-game should be encouraged, wouldn't it be better to have something DESIGNED to assist with this rather than be able to help with it as a secondary use?

Why would you want to chew up a slot on your ship for this? Any fit that had one of these would be inherently bad. No matter what slot this would fit in, there would always be something better you could put there. Examples: If it was a low, a drone damage mod, Midslot you would be better with a Omnidirectional tracking link.
Would you have a ship dedicated to repairing your drones? That would be a waste as well.

because its free repairs. if u want to repair ur drones, take the time, use the cap. that way a skilled attentive pilot is better at this game than a dumb lazy pilot.

instant shield recharge when u pull ur drones? yeah thats not broken at all...

As was stated, this is a highslot module, which would be put there as such BECAUSE quite a few ships, particularly the drone boats, have a number of utility high slots open, the tristan and arbitrator being prime examples of this.

I would agree with you completely if it were a mid or low slot. But aside from a neut in pvp, this would provide a decent compliment to the drone control augmentor, or drone links on capitals. The latter of which would find this ESPECIALLY useful since a triage carrier or any other carrier for that matter wouldn't have to deal with taking its reps off of its targets to repair its fighters or fighter bombers mid-flight.

My mistake; I was conflating that with ship docking. I'll fix that in the OP. Thanks for pointing that out and supporting the idea for its merits; I was mostly seeing this having good application in pvp.

if the module activates with a cap cost, or reduces a ships cap recharge rate passively, then thatleast means its not free.

Only cap costs associated with the module are its activation cost.
